Kid Dabb
I'm enjoying Kind Lady now for the first time. Such a vulnerable woman - I feel so sorry for her in this frightening situation. Bad Basil! No crumpet! Now I'm looking forward to Larceny, Inc. this evening. Edward G. Robinson can't help but succeed no matter how hard he tries to fail I wonder if that would work today. I love a luggage problem.
rohanaka
HI Jackie... I just realized thanks to April... that I saw a different version than the one you did... but if it was half as creepy as the one I am remembering... CREEPY is definitley the right word... I am going to go pop in my tape for NMF right now... :-)

I've seen NIGHT MUST FALL; if anyone has only seen Bob in HERE COMES MR. JORDAN, they're in for a shock when they see his "Danny". I'm looking forward to LONDON AT NIGHT. Anything with London in the title, I'm there.
MissGoddess
Hello, Lady B, I will probably miss the first ten minutes or so of London at Night, but I'm looking forward to the rest. George Murphy in London---what that Irishman is doing there I just have to find out.
Bronxgirl48
It's a short film, so don't miss too much. I'm hoping there'll be lots of fog and George Zucco.
MissGoddess
I'm hoping there'll be lots of fog and George Zucco. I'll run home. Today was the perfect day in New York for these movies, it was dreary, rainy and very cold.
MissGoddess
I really enjoyed LONDON BY NIGHT. Look out all you powers of darkness...you are no match for............. UMBRELLA MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So was *Montagu Love* a "heart throb" in his day? ha!
Bronxgirl48
Ah, there's old Zuc as we usually know him. But in LONDON AT NIGHT he plays a very different sort... The Umbrella Man terrorizes the city! But this madman has other identities, including The Rabbit Man. He's pretty busy. George Murphy actually plays his character AS an Irishman, complete with light brogue; apparently he's been in England VERY long, because at one point he starts a sentence to the Inspector with "I say.." I wouldn't have known it was Rita Johnson except for her very distinct voice. She has an unfortunate hairdo. Pleasant but rushed little mystery with atmospheric Hollywood British flavor. "Jonesy" the terrier steals the show.
MissGoddess
I really enjoyed it---I have enjoyed most of the MGM-on-the-Thames programmers TCM has aired in the past year or two. Keep them coming, TCM! They often entertain me more than some bigger films. And like I said, today was the day for foggy, British thrillers. By the by---this movie was made in England, right? Or did they really fool me? I just wish I could have stayed home to see my adorable Bobby charm the heads off the ladies in NIGHT MUST FALL. I never tired of that one. I'll never feel the same about my umbrella...ha!!
JackFavell
I had a moment right before Night Must Fall started, where I got nervous that Robert Montgomery wouldn't be as good as I remembered. I didn't have to worry. From the minute he set foot on screen, strolling arrogantly and way too slowly into the parlor, I bought it, hook line and sinker. I bought the accent, I bought the entire character. For a minute, I thought, "Is it possible that Bobby is actually from the UK?" He was that good. The whole movie was atmospheric and sexy, and creepy and GOOD. Unfortunately, I had to leave in the middle of it - but I did record it last time and I am watching the end tonight if I have to stay up all night. MissGoddess
Yay!! I'm glad you have it recorded. Did you get as far as the HAT BOX yet? I LUVS my "Bobbums"---good, bad, CREEPY or surly.
JackFavell
HAT BOX....... eeeeeewwwwwwww! No not quite yet, just to the point of Roz's realization .......and then the tile guys called me to the kitchen, and Alice came home..... Tonight I will snuggle under my blankets, with my hot Earl Grey, and my dog lying down at the other end of the sofa, and I will watch the end...... and then freak out hearing noises for the rest of the night! Unfortunately, I probably would have been one of Bobby's victims, I found him way too attractive......
Bronxgirl48
I love your description, "MGM-on-the-Thames". Not sure where LONDON AT NIGHT was filmed. I really enjoyed the set design, and it had a nice montage of the city's reactions to the fiend on the loose. I actually could have seen Murphy (and Jonesy) going on to do some more "Michael Denis" mysteries, although I think this particular story was based on a play. I too live for these programmers more than the big budget stuff. Message was edited by: Bronxgirl48

molo14
Hi April, Well my goodness, I have been so distracted by March madness and pookas that I haven't even had a chance to visit and welcome you back home!!!!
molo14
A few things. I really like Aline MacMahon. *Kind Lady* is an interesting little film. I didn't catch it this time but I have a dvd recording. I was surprised too at just how dark it was when I first saw it. It's a favorite of mine. Others that I've seen that I thought really showcased her well are *Five Star Final*, *The Merry Frinks* and *Heat Lightning*. I see she is in *The Man From Laramie*, another reason I should get to that film. Elizabeth Montgomery is very beautiful and I've always been quite fond of her. She never really took off on the big screen. The only film I have seen her in is *Johnny Cool* and I didn't care much for that. *Who's Been Sleeping in My Bed?* looks like a fun watch. I have always enjoyed Montgomery on television though, not just in *Bewitched* (I have the first five seasons on DVD) but in guest roles and tv movies. She really shined in that medium. Her passing at such a young age was a great loss and saddens me deeply. Kathy, I'm glad you liked *John Loves Mary*. I love those light comedies. Patricia Neal's debut and definitely a different kind of role for her. Reagan is pretty good and you can't go wrong with that supporting cast. Particularly my main man Jack Carson. If TCM would ever play it, I highly recommend *Louisa* as a good Reagan comedy. He is perfect as the befuddled father and adept at the slow burn. He shows some real spark. It's another wonderfully cast film with Charles Coburn and Edmund Gwenn fighting over Spring Byington, who plays Reagan's mother. Ruth Hussey plays his wife and Connie Gilchrist is the housekeeper. Also on hand are Piper Laurie, in her debut, as his daughter, Scotty Beckett as her boyfriend and little Jimmy Hunt, who always makes me laugh, as his son. It's one to watch for. rohanaka
HAT BOX....... eeeeeewwwwwwww! My gosh, my golly that aint the half of it! :-) I stayed up way too late watching this movie tonight... (and NOW I am still up way too late... I am sure I will be paying for all of this tomorrow. Blech!) I really enjoyed Night Must Fall... I LOVED the way this film looks... It is eerie and beautiful all at the same time. But I have to confess, that after only the first 2 seconds of the film, I realized that I had already seen it. (but it was several years ago, and I never knew what it was called) And then after I realized I already knew what it was about... I was creeped out even more because I knew what was coming. But I still had to watch it all again though.... I didn't want to waste a good "creepout". Ha. :-) That Robert Montgomery was SOMETHING!! And the old woman... UGH!! She was something ELSE! It would have been a creepy story just between her and poor Rosalind Russell....and the little "mind games". And Roz had her own little issues too, didn't she???????? :-) I really enjoyed all the little twists and turns in this story, and the way he is so obvious to Roz, but still so cunning and deceptive to everyone else. And he eventually more or less gives up all pretense with her... just to the brink of being flat out blatant. And she was almost drawn into it all enough to "embrace" his evil.... almost. He was like "staring into a fire" for her, almost. She knew he was "dangerous" but as much as she seemed to detest him, she was still very fascinated by him... And yet... I don't think she realized she was really playing with fire... until... It was a very interesting relationship. (PS... hope the tile is TERRIFIC. I am SO jealous) PSS.... HI Larry... thanks again for bringing up John Loves Mary... Jack Carson was hilarious... but they ALL were... The only one I thought could have maybe been better was Lily... but I don't think she took anything away from the film at all since she is funny enough just the way she fits in the story so well LONG before she ever really shows up. :-) Thanks for the tip on Louisa. I will keep a look out for that one as well...

CineMaven
Hi Miss Goddess...good morning everyone. My bosses are out of the office...so I'm on-line sneaking a chat with some of you. The long-suffering secretary. MacMahon was a good foil for Edward G. And that film is absotively and posolutely relevant today what with the tabloid world reigning supreme in all its scummy glory. Edward G. washing his hands over and over again like Lady MacBeth with the bloodstains of many. Lecherous ol' Boris Karloff. Good movie.
MissGoddess
Maven, I saw that Elizabeth Montgomery/Dean Martin movie ages ago and have been hoping TCM would air it one day. MissGoddess
And Roz had her own little issues too, didn't she???????? Ha! I really enjoyed all the little twists and turns in this story, and the way he is so obvious to Roz, but still so cunning and deceptive to everyone else. And he eventually more or less gives up all pretense with her... just to the brink of being flat out blatant. And she was almost drawn into it all enough to "embrace" his evil.... almost. Their cat-and-mouse relationship gave this thriller an added psychological dimension. After all, she already had an admirer, someone nice and steady so her life wasn't that awful, though she seemed to chafe under it. I know the old lady was a terrible drain to work for---I wonder if secretly Rosalind longed for her to be the next victim, lol! He was like "staring into a fire" for her, almost. She knew he was "dangerous" but as much as she seemed to detest him, she was still very fascinated by him... And yet... I don't think she realized she was really playing with fire... until... Which brings me back to why she seemed to forget her "boyfriend" so quickly. She was looking for excitement and Danny-boy really hypnotized her. I like your analogy, "staring into a fire", ha! Or like a rabbit staring at a snake. I thought the scene in the kitchen was one of the best. He was so smart, he could read her like a book. The interesting thing is it really took Danny to show Rosalind her true self. She is rather a superior prig and prideful at first. He makes her confront the fact that she has somewhat baser desires like anyone else. And it really sticks in her craw!
CineMaven
"I wonder if secretly Rosalind longed for her to be the next victim, lol!" - Miss Goddess You have read my thoughts exactly. I think it became a set-up and that thought made me love Roz all the more. jcphelps writes in the Hot Topics Forum > Re: GOOD OLDER MOVIE COMING UP ON TCM Posted: Feb 27, 2009 5:56 PM in response to: FredCDobbs "I would like to suggest...on March 2nd, at 4:00 am 'Night Must Fall' this is one of the best suspense drama's, you'll see a different side of Robert Montgomery. Both these movies have been on TCM. but if you haven't seen them I think they are worth a look. Just thought I would share." A singer/song-writer friend of mine appeared at NYC's Joe's Pub last month and I shot and am editing her performance. As I was grinding it out in the Final Cut Pro world, I had the company of TCM as I often do. It was Abnormal Psychology night at TCM & Robert Osborne was introducing "NIGHT MUST FALL." Yeech,I thought. I'm not a Robert Montgomery fan, no matter how many movies he did with Queen Shearer (who was one of my favorites). I have never been able to warm up to him, I can't explain it...no matter if he made every movie ever made in the early 1930's. Nope! Rosalind Russell...I'm a fan, but not so much of 1930's Roz. Yeah she worked with Gable and whatevever. But short hair, in her British phase with that affected British accent. I like my Roz officious and bombastic. Not slow-talking but bantering with the best of 'em in the 1940's (okay...okay, starting with "The Women.") Nah, give me my Roz with her brunette hair cascading past her shoulders or in true pompadour style and Joan Crawford shoulder pads. "Night Must Fall" Thanxxx but no thanxxx! But I remember my New Year's Resolution to watch films that I haven't seen before. (Darn it!) So, I begrudgingly left TCM on, with "Night Must Fall" serving as white noise behind my editing assignment. BOY WAS I WRONG!!!! - HEAVY DUTY SPOILERS AHEAD! What was I thinking??!! I thoroughly enjoyed "NIGHT MUST FALL." And Robert Montgomery is now my new favorite 1930's actor. Robert Montgomery did a magnificent job as a charming murderer, fooling everyone but the repressed Rosalind Russell. Roz was great and sexy, falling like a moth to a flame for the murderous rogue. There was a lot of tension in that film that pulled me from my editing. Hey how did that happen? My friend's counting on me. The tension came in discovering something no one else knows. The tension came in Robert Montgomery's very sly seductive wooing of Rosalind Russell. When we first meet Montgomery he tosses aside the house cat. When he begins to ingratiate himself with the Lady of the Manor (Dame May Whitty) we see him pick up the same cat and stroke it. A small gesture but a red flag. (And as we know, we must pay attention to red flags on this Board!) He gently comes on to Roz but she'll have none of his blarney but out of his sight we see she's affected by his compliments. She has the back-up of tall dark and handsome Alan Marshall...but she wants danger...she wants to be awakened from the malaise of her upper-class existence. Darn it, where are my notes. My notes...my kingdom for my notes. It's all a jumbled mess in my head now. I shouldn't have started this....ACK!!! ACK!!! All I know is I want to see more of Robert Montgomery now. Oh yeah Dame May Whitty...not her usual ditsy self a la "Gaslight." She was a cold imperious old lady. She excellently played the scene when she was left alone in the house. I totally put aside my editing and was glued to the screen. How could this be, I've never wanted to see this movie. I freaked when she got out of the chair. Ladies...I've botched up a perfectly good conversation. Oooh...I hear my boss. I gotta run! Message was edited by CineMaven because I profusely apologize for starting something I didn't finish.
