HollywoodGolightly
Ah, I see your point, but for many young 'uns who are just the right age to watch it, it could also almost be considered one of the "oldies". I was just so moved when that movie came out, because it shed some light into the real-life conditions in which Keiko the whale had been living, and it helped make it possible to free Keiko, for real. I remember being very moved by the whole thing at the time.
Bronxgirl48
Holly, BORN FREE is much better than FREE WILLY; it's considered a classic of family entertainment. And what's not to like about hunky Bill Travers, too, lol? Message was edited by: Bronxgirl48
HollywoodGolightly
Sorry if I made it sound like I thought more highly of Free Willy, the truth is I have not seen Born Free and when I first read the post making mention of it, I was confusing it with another recent movie that I think had a similar title. I see now that it is actually a 1966 film, and from what I can see it looks like it must be a pretty good movie. I do hope to watch it fairly soon. Would you say it's as good as or better than the original Flipper movie?
Bronxgirl48
If you're not a Boomer like me, then probably you would be more familiar with FREE WILLY. I liked the old Flipper t.v. show, but haven't seen the movie.
HollywoodGolightly
I'm not a boomer, but I think regardless of age, Free Willy would have been a special movie for me, not just because of Keiko the whale, but also because of the film's locations, which aren't used all that often by a major Hollywood production. The original Flipper film shows up on TCM now and then. I also enjoyed watching the old TV series when I was growing up. Flipper seemed like he was such an intelligent dolphin, I always thought that was really neat. Maybe that is why I loved hearing the story of Keiko, and its eventual release from that cramped Mexico City theme park. HollywoodGolightly
I thought the point of a movie ramble thread was that there was no topic... but if there is, let's go back to it.

I think this makes 4 NEW ones of his I have seen since the first of the year... and probably 6 or 7 all total of his movies that I have seen since January) > > A friend of mine had a copy of Hatari that she did not need anymore... and I was lucky enough to get it.... and I have to tell you..... OH MY GOLLY... the kidling and I had ourselves a good old time watching this one. > > > > I have only seen parts of this film in the past.... so did not have a really good fix on what it was all about other than a bunch of people running around Africa chasing wild animals. So it was really a lot of fun to get to watch it all the way through. And as already mentioned... the kidling really enjoyed it a lot too. (Though the QT conked out on us in the middle of it, the old fogey!! ha.) > > Now... I have to confess.... this is NOT Howard Hawks best film, I know. And it is certainly not the best DUKE film I ever saw either. But it WAS fun. And to quote Dr. Seuss... fun is good. :-) > > It has PLENTY of action, plenty of comedy, some romance, some great scenery, entertaining music, AND ( the biggest draw for the short person) PLENTY of footage of all those wild animals.(I gotta say... after watching this movie... I will have a whole new appreciation the next time I go to the ZOO for all the work that goes into bringing wild animals over from other countries!!! Ha. ) > > And we even got to use this movie as a Math tutorial.... ha. When the first baby elephant showed up.... the Duke comments that it took 20 goats to make enough milk to feed it.... so when the SECOND baby elephant showed up... my little smarty pants turns to me and says.... "WOW, Mom, that's FORTY GOATS NOW!!! ha. And then when the THIRD elephant showed up a little later... well... we had a lot of fun counting by twenties to figure out the next number of goats! Not bad for a kindergartner!) :-) > > > > I really have to say... this film was a surprise for me... I kept waiting for a moment of "drama" or some sort of "heavy" story line to pop up w/ regard to Dallas' past.... or the Duke's.... or for the German guy and the French guy to really fight it out or something... And while there IS a little of that in the storyline here and there... there's not a lot of depth to it, so really, this film just has a much lighter feel than I was expecting. More or less there was a "just for fun" feel to it (similar to Donovan's Reef... though the story lines are COMPLETELY different) In fact... it was so light hearted, there was very little "weight" to it at all... but it really was nice for a change of pace just to get to sit back and enjoy a movie without haveing to think about it and sort out the characters and all their motivations etc. > > And this one has a LOT of the same familiar Hawk's trademarks... the "ensemble" cast with lots of male camaraderie and TWO young and "spunky" girls this time. I also saw send ups to several of the other Hawks films in the gathering around the Piano... the use of "Papa" for Wayne's character from time to time... there was even the friendly rivalry between the German and the French man w/ the shoot out (similar to Red River) AND of course.... PLENTY of dopey looking HATS!!!!! (HA!! THANKS again Jackie for that story on Hawks' hat choices that you posted the other day... I took one look at the Duke's hat and said... "HEY.... THAT'S what Howard Hawks wears when he goes FISHING!!! Ha.) > > Just for fun.... here's the trailer... it really shows a lot of the exciting animal chase scenes and also some of the fun moments too .... > > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jIbfTWJBrRU > > I say again... this film was a pleasant surprise... And I am really glad my friend had this tape and thought of me. Because I may not have sought this one out anytime soon otherwise... and now... we have a new fun kid friendly film for us to look forward to from time to time.... (it will be a nice diversion from the Disney stuff once in a while!! ha) And I have a feeling the kidling and I will likely go around all day tomorrow singing the tune to "Baby Elephant Walk" and swishing our arms in front of our face like elephant trunks.... NOT a bad way to spend a Monday now that I think about it. HA!

It is one of the few in that safari genre that I actually like, and that is because it IS so light. I also have a great love of Red Buttons for some unknown reason and so I will watch anything he is in. The whole cast should be awkward together, with the very young french girl, Hardy Kruger, Elsa Martinelli and the older men, but somehow it all works. They are all so disparate, but it works maybe because it doesn't take itself seriously at all. It is a great Sunday afternoon movie. You guys should watch "Born Free" next, if you have a new box of kleenex around...

fxreyman
Speaking of Hatari! (one of my favorite JW films), reminds me of a story my wife Annie has told many times. Since she is not a member of this board, then I will tell the story..... Back before we were married, while we were dating, I invited Annie out to my house for dinner and a movie. She drove all the way out from the northside of Chicago out to where I lived in the far western suburbs. We went out to dinner then drove back to my house to watch a movie. Being a huge John Wayne fan, I decided that we should watch Hatari! That was back in the days before DVDs. I had one of the older double VHS tapes of the movie. So I put the first tape in and we start watching it. Now, this is where I have to tell it the way she tells it....... "At first the movie was sort of interesting, but about 45 minutes into it I got awfully bored and tired of watching it. I was sitting there, ready to pull my hair out of my head, because the movie was so slow and dull when Rey got up to eject the tape. Much to my relief the movie was over. Then all of a sudden, Rey takes out another tape and proudly says here is the second part of Hatari! I could not believe it. I have to sit through another hour plus of this movie. I have to get out of here!!!!!" So ended any future viewings of John Wayne while we were dating. Of course now, 18 years later (we have been happily married for eleven years!) she will watch one of his movies every now and then. She is a good sport about it though, she takes great pleasure in telling that story. I just had to share that story with all of you.

fxreyman
Thanks for your comments.... As for sacrifice....I don't watch as many JW films as I would like. When she wants to watch a movie, it is usually a new release, which I don't really care to do, seeing how I have over 500 dvd's in my collection. But, as I have learned from this board and others, a lot of people do not care to watch classic films. I count my wife as one of those people. I will say though, that when April introduced Gone With The Wind recently, Annie was thrilled and sat there the entire movie. I was proud of her. Oh, I also fix most of the meals and I have the great pleasure of grocery shopping.

rohanaka
OH MY GOLLY fxreyman... THAT is TOO funny. (why am I suddenly hearing the song "The Things You Do For Love" in my head right now.. ha. Like walking in the rain and the snow... when there's nowhere to go.... and you FEEL LIKE YOU JUST CAN'T Stand HATARI.... I freely confess that not EVERYBODY is a Duke fan... but the kidling sure is. My daughter is only 6.... but she loves John Wayne. (what films I have let her watch so far anyway... ha.) In fact... at two local restaurants near us they have a lot of classic movie and nostalgia photos in frames all over the walls. And at one place is a REALLY good photo of the Duke in Rio Bravo. And the other restaurant has a photo of the Duke dressed as Hondo.. and if we go to EITHER of these places to eat... and if the tables near these photos are open.... she will tell the waitresses she wants to sit at "OUR Table" ha. And that means "by the Duke". And if someone else is sitting there when we arrive... she gets a little "pouty" and says... "Aww... look.... those people are sitting at our table!" HA!! (do I know how to raise a kid or WHAT??) fxreyman says: Oh, I also fix most of the meals and I have the great pleasure of grocery shopping.
