rohanaka
he and Ford got along quite well Somewhere...(maybe in the wikipedia site? ) I read that he and Ford were neighbors at one time....so I bet you are right. I like the postcard in the middle...he sure knew how to "clean up"! April...about the land race...It is one of my favorite parts...and the whole time I was watching it, I was thinking of this scene from Far And Away...do you think Ron Howard had a little "Fordian" inspiration going on here?? I've never seen *Far and Away* but that YouTube clip surely confirms it. I'll be interested to hear who Opie may talk about as far as influences or directors he admires in his upcoming chat on TCM on the 29th with Robert Osborne. I remember the scene in *Far and Away* very well, although when I saw that for the first time in theaters I had yet to see other similar scenes in classic movies. I'd bet RH was inspired not just by Ford's movie, but quite possibly by *Cimarron* as well. It would be great if someone could post screencap comparisons, but don't look at me to do it. rohanaka
I've never seen Far and Away I am not by any stretch of the imagination a Tom Cruise (or Nicole Kidman) fan...but knowing your love of all things Ireland...and that you like a good "adventure/love story, I can highly recommend it to you. I saw it at the theater w/ my mom when it first came out several years ago...and I have it on tape now too. It is a bit long in places...but it really is an enjoyable story and it is one of my all time favorite "Opie" films.
rohanaka
possibly by Cimarron as well That one is a "wanna see" for me, so will have to take your word for it.
Film_Fatale
Watching *Far and Away* when it premiered in theaters was really awesome if you managed to watch it in a theater playing it in 70mm. I think there may have been a dozen or less of those back in '92. I think it may have been the last Hollywood production filmed with 65mm cameras. HA! :-) Too bad it doesn't have Russell Crowe instead of that sofa-jumper. If it happens to come on TV I'll try again to watch it. I tried once but it didn't grab me, probably because of the peformers. I do like the idea and the story, though.
Film_Fatale
Kathy & April, I hope you two won't mind if I change the subject a little bit away from westerns for a bit, to briefly mention a wonderful new Fritz Lang movie that I've just seen. I talked a little bit about it in noir, but I also wanted to mention it in here for folks who don't visit the gangster & film noir forum very often. The 1936 movie, *You Only Live Once*, available on DVD from Image Entertainment, is kind of a distant precursor to *Bonnie and Clyde*, with Henry Fonda giving an excellent performance as an ex-con who gets released from prison and marries Sylvia Sydney, but is accused of a crime he didn't commit shortly before moving in to their new home, and is sentenced to death. It's a very gripping story, and it also features Margaret Hamilton in a small role that provides a little bit of comic relief. This screenshot isn't one of my own but it does show Fonda at a key moment in the movie:
JackFavell
I gotta agree with MissG- give me the scruffy Tom......with the blue blue eyes.... wow...... I was looking through my few silent books, but could not find any pics of Tom worth scanning. There are a couple I would like to scan just to show what his hair looked like, because in 1914, his hair was extremely curly...sometimes it is combed nicely in waves (like Joseph Cotten), but in the pics from "The Spoilers", it is curled up all over his head like Shirley Temple's and blond looking..... OH, wow, Jackie...if you have the time and it's not too much trouble, I would enjoy seeing those pix. I love him with dark hair and eyebrows but maybe he just wore that look for *3 Bad Men* only? rohanaka
give me the scruffy Tom......with the blue blue eyes.... wow On the right guy...(our Tom would qualify) "scruffy" is a very good thing. I think I like him both ways...Scruffy most of the time...and spruced up for his "Sunday go to meetin'" occassions. Guess I'm a "best of both worlds" kinda gal. Hope you get that scanned...would like to see the "golden locks" :-)
MissGoddess
This site reveals Santschi was actually born in Switzerland and that he served as a technical consultant on Gary's remake of *The Spoilers*. http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=7929 And married to one wife from 1913 till his death. How wonderfully unHollywood.
JackFavell
It looks more likely that the blond was not permanent. Most of the other pics I have seen of him are with dark hair. Maybe he is just sun bleached, or he darkened as he got older. The photos I have are very small, and I don't know how well they will come out. Last time I scanned from that book, the scans came out so you could see how the paper was woven. The pics were not very clear. However I will try, if hubby will bring the scanner downstairs to my computer.
Film_Fatale
I am now genuinely intrigued by this Santschi fella. I'll keep my eye on him when I watch *3 Bad Men* !! B-) In an unrelated movie ramble, caught the remake of *The Day the Earth Stood Still* today, and it was better than I expected. And of course last night I caught the original on Blu-Ray. I'll post at greater length about both the original and the remake in the other threads that have been created specifically for that one.
molo14
Hi everyone, I wanted to let you know that my mom had the surgery on Thursday and she came through it well. The surgeon was impressed with how good she did. It took about three and a half hours and he was able to complete the artery bypass successfully. She has been in ICU since then and I think she is doing well. She can't communicate very well but I can see her and talk to her and that is important. I know that there are still many obstacles to face and the recovery will be long but I feel she can make it through. I want to tell you that I was plenty scared and that Thursday was a very hard day for me. The support I received from all of you wonderful people meant so much to me and helped me through it. Words cannot express how I feel about you guys. God Bless all of you. Larry (I see I have a lot of rambles to catch up on. I look forward to reading them.) MissGoddess
Oh *Larry* I'm so relieved and happy to hear your Mom is coming along so well. And I hope you can relax a little now and know we're here for you.
Bronxgirl48
I would dearly love to see 3 BAD MEN. Just from these Santschi photos, it makes me want to see it even more; he's very charismatic. I asked my mother if she watched PENNIES FROM HEAVEN and she said no, and that she was sorry she missed Cary Grant and Irene Dunne. I had to tell her that was PENNY SERENADE, but she came close, lol. Film_Fatale
Larry, It's incredibly comforting and heartening to hear from you and know that your mom is doing well after that surgery. I remember being with my mom after her last surgery (she is a breast cancer survivor) and there are no words that can adequately convey the joy that I felt seeing her smiling as she was coming to, when the anesthesia had worn off. I am sure you must have felt something very similar. A heartfelt hug and here's looking forward to more of your movie rambles! B-)

I've never seen THE MAN FROM SNOWY RIVER, but like you I'm strangely drawn to THE ONLY GAME IN TOWN, where for some odd reason I love Liz's Vegas apartment, because it's kind of tropical-style cute and cozy even though it has a plastic, transient look about it; it's not a home, just a place where a "showgirl" (yeah, right, 5'4" and somewhat overweight) can enjoy her morning o.j. with her lover in the little kitchen with the bar stools. Was Liz wearing go-go boots in one scene, or did I dream it? What was George thinking?? I usually think Christopher Plummer is always the most darkly charismatic guy in whatever movie he's in, and SOMEWHERE IN TIME is no exception. I was always hoping Jane Seymour got back with him. The only thing about Australia I like is Rod Taylor. That's one place I have no desire to visit because not only is it HOT, but I've heard it's got the world's most poisonous snakes (and a lot of them) not to mention cane toads who are pretty ugly and get into everything. Why do you think I've resisting going for a visit so far. I think it also has the world's largest diversity and population of INSECTS. You can always tell a movie filmed in Oz by all the flies the actors are constantly swishing away. Still, it fascinates me.
