pedall4159
This thread is my effort to help establish another classic movie fan so please just bear with the request. I'm working on turning my best friend into a bonafide film buff and some help would be GREATLY appreciated. I've given her titles of the basics, the essentials, and some of my favorites(the Cary Grant's, Hitchcock's, Casablanca's, etc.) but I think she doesn't belive all of what I'm telling her so if you all could just give some suggestions as to your favorites or anything you think a clean slate should see, I and my friend would be obliged. Her cable provider doesn't offer TCM and as I told her to whenever possible stay away from AMC, this would be a great help in convincing her that I have some idea of what I'm talking about. There are no limitations on the genres so any suggestions will suffice. We are, I'm sure, both grateful for your cooperation. Pedall
venerados
Perhaps it would help to know what she already likes. Filmsite.org is a great place for recommendations. Don't think I've seen it mentioned here.
pgm80s
definitely for a high school girl it would help to know some genres that she prefers, I'm a big John Wayne fan and could help with some of his such as "The Quiet Man" which I'm sure she would enjoy. As for others some good ones to start on might be certain actors like Clark Gable, Spencer Tracy, James Stewart,Humphrey Bogart, Katharine Hepburn, Claudette Colbert, Greta Garbo, Grace Kelley, Hedy Lamarr(ask antar for more info) etc... Pick a few of their great classics and you can't go wrong. Also for Cary Grant you like "Topper" definetly watch "Topper Returns" which he id not in but it is hilarious and would be a fun movie to start with. I started a few of my friends with movies that were in color because they said they wouldn't watch B&W but after a while they started watching all types of classics with me. classicsfan1119
I recall that it was much easier for me to enter the Classics Era movies realm if I started out by watching just Comedies, or Romantic Comedies until I became more familiar with some of the actors who were well known and famous. Then gradually, I wanted to see some Drama's, and then Film Noir. Just a suggestion: "Arsenic and Old Lace" is a good place to start. ML
daddysprimadonna
When I wanted a fellow fan to enjoy and discuss classic movies with, I set my sights on my 17 year old niece. She's a "girly-girl" like me, so I knew just how to hook her.I had her watch "These Glamour Girls"-a black and white film,no less,to a teenager- with me,and she took the bait. Then it was "Zeigfeld Girl". Now she adores Lana Turner, and is going through the "Marilyn" stage. And she'll watch almost any classic with me-even silents,I got her with "Our Dancing Daughters". Strategy, strategy, hehe. I still haven't gotten her into Westerns, but the day will come,if I can just get her to sit through "She Wore A Yellow Ribbon". It was an acquired taste for me,too, but that's the movie that did it:)
kaneboop
Just as long as it's not The Alamo. Not thrilling enough for a beginner. I started in a generic way with the Clint Eastwood movies, Good, Bad, and the Ugly.
daddysprimadonna
I can't remember what classic film hooked me,I've loved them all since I was a child, and even then hated modern movies. I'd bet it was a musical though. Right now I'm in love with "Kiss Me Kate",it's been raining buckets here for a week,so one day I watched it three times in a row! It's so witty, and the dancing and singing, and acting-all entrancing. I go around humming "Wunderbar, wunderbar",without knowing it.And I replay Ann Miller's dance number "Too Darn Hot", and "Always True To You In My fashion" over and over. Bob Fosse looks so young in this movie!
cinemetal
Hmm, this is an interesting and personal one for me, since my girlfriend is eighteen (I'm 26, so hush up!) and is just starting to get into classic films. Here are a few which got me right away: Captain Blood The Sea Hawk (1940) The Awful Truth Modern Times His Girl Friday Sunrise The General 42nd Street Singin' in the Rain Scarface Casablanca Double Indemnity Force of Evil Body and Soul Mr. Smith Goes to Washington Arsenic and Old Lace The Searchers Lawrence of Arabia (too new?) Hobson's Choice The Phantom of the Opera (1925) The Lavender Hill Mob These Three The Heiress Rebel Without a Cause
