sandykaypax
Maureen O'Hara would be great...I saw Kim Novak on Larry King Live this past year and she looked fabulous! I'd love to see her on a private screenings. Also, I noticed today on mongo's birthday thread that Joan Carroll is 73--she'd be another person that I'd love to see interviewed. moviejoe79
Thanks edgdrv, you're right, I did mix up Ruth Hussey and Laraine Day - thanks for pointing that out to me. Another star that I think would do a Private Screenings is Farley Granger - he would have some great stories to tell. Just to hear him talk about the making of "Strangers on a Train" would be great. path40a
If anyone saw Long Day's Journey into Night last night, you heard Robert Osborne say that Sidney Lumet, this year's recipient of a special award (Thalberg?) at the Academy Awards celebration on Feb. 27, will be a guest of his later this year for a Private Screening. I can't wait!
moviejoe79
Sidney Lumet! C'mon TCM! Can't you get some of our favorite old time Hollywood stars to interview? I know he's a famous director and all, and I love his films "Dog Day Afternoon," and "Garbo Talks," but, I was hoping for one of our legendary stars! Hopefully next time. path40a
While I too wish that TCM could land some of our favorite classic stars, especially before they pass away, Sidney Lumet is sure to be interesting, perhaps more so than Scorsese was. I mean, the guy's directorial debut was 12 Angry Men! Then, of course, there's The Pawnbroker, Fail-Safe, The Hill, Network, The Verdict and the ones you mentioned ... but what has he done for us lately;- )
mvozus
I thought you all might like to know that Ruth Hussey is still going strong at 93 years of age. I just finished interviewing her son John for my upcoming book, "Children of Hollywood," and he tells me she's still, "as sharp as a tack." There is a Ruth Hussey website, run by her son, and I'm sure Ruth would love to read some encouraging messages in the guestbook there. Go to - www.ruthhussey.com. rosinryanz
What about John Gavin? It seems we all have forgotten him. I sure would love to see Jennifer Jones, but she keeps mum on the subject of her career and her relationships. Darn!
kak122760
I would like to see Jennifer Jones and Doris Day. But, both seem to lead very private lives. Maybe, one day.
leobertucelli
Oh I agree moviejoe. There are so few of old hollywood stars left, why not reach out for them before it's too late. What comes to mind is Glenn Ford. All that seems to happen is a mention (and lately not even that) when one passes.
richardny4me
Well I am sure Lumet will be interesting, but it is a little disappointing, with so few remaining classic Hollywood stars, we get someone who will most likely be interviewed in other places because of his Oscar tribute. loliteblue
I'm sure Mr. Lumet will have lots to inform us about when he is on TCM looking forward to it. But i think TCM should consider Leslie Lielson as a guest on tcm since he is the nephew of Jean Hersholt he would probably have lots of tibbits on his uncle to share with all of us lolite.... richardny4me
I see TCM has their next installment of Private Screenings scheduled for Saturday August 1 - Lauren Bacall is a very good choice, I am looking forward to the show. Between Bogart, her own film career and her Warner Brothers studio experience, it should be really interesting! OK, - so who is next? LOL.
richardny4me
I meant to write the Bacall Private Screenings is on Monday August 1, not Saturday August 1.
moviejoe79
Richard, how did you find this out so early? She was recently on Larry King, and was very interesting. Just hearing her talk about all the people she's known is fascinating. And no doubt Robert Osborne is a MUCH better interviewer then King, who should retire in my opinion. I'm sure he'll ask her a lot of great questions.
richardny4me
Hi Joe, I printed out the August calender via Schedule-Main Schedule Flash. I was really surprised myself, because I did not read anything about it anywhere else. I even did search to make sure she never did one before. I am really looking forward to it, especially since I missed both the Larry King episode and the book signing she did in Manhattan last month. wmcki76058
I too am looking forward to seeing the Lauren Bacall Private Screenings interview. She's a favorite of mine. I loved her book. Thanks Lauren for updating it for your younger generation of fans. I'd also like to see Dorothy Malone interviewed. She's a talent in herself and breathtakingly beautiful to boot. She's worked with some of the greats of Hollywood. Humphrey Bogart, Randolph Scott, Robert Taylor, Rock Hudson, Robert Stack and Glen Ford just to name a few. I'd be first in line to see this one. edgedrv
Frankly, I hate to be the one dissenter but I am greatly disappointed about the choice of Lauren Bacall to be interviwed by Robert Osborne. As much as I like Bacall who is a superstar, the lady been interviewed many times, participated in many documentaries, etc. that I have mostly seen. I guess since her new book is out she might be available for interviews. Is there anything new she can say that she hasn't said before? As stated before by many people there are so may actors/actresses that have NOT OR HAVE NEVER BEEN interviewed. I agree that Oscar winner Malone. who I always considered very underrated, is a very good choice. My list could go on and on: Eleanor Parker, Ann Blyth, Marsha Hunt, Ann Rutherford, Shelley Winters. I'm not sure why these people have not been picked. I have recently seen Hunt and Rutherford at a tribute to Henry Fonda but they are getting older as well as the other actresses. I also heard Winters in not in the best of health so time is of the essence with these people! Once these people are gone, a little bit more of Hollywood dies. Is anybody out there at TCM listening? moviejoe79
Edg, I agree with you completely, but, tcmprogrammer once said (and it may have been on this thread) that a lot of these people have been asked, and have declined. Now, I doubt they asked Ann Rutherford or Marsha Hunt, since they probably don't consider them famous enough to be interviewed for Private Screenings, but I'm sure they've tried to get Shelley Winters, who I'd LOVE to see, as well as Ann Blyth. Another great one would be Jean Simmons. The one star I want to see interviewed before she dies is Joan Fontaine. She's one of my all time favorites, a true living legend, and for some reason she doesn't do interviews or much of anything anymore. She just spends time on her estate in Carmel, California, and that's about it. I wish she'd pay the world a visit!
bansi4
While watching "Sergeant York" today on TCM I was reminded of the sprightly and sweet Joan Leslie, who I'm happy to say is still with us and also making personal appearances. It would be ideal to have her sit beside Robert Osborne for an interview especially since she co-starred with Gary Cooper, James Cagney, Ida Lupino, Humphrey Bogart, Henry Fonda, Fred Astaire, Jane Russell, Randolph Scott, etc, and she should have some wonderful recollections to share. I believe she is 80 now, so please make the arrangements for this interview...before its too late. Mongo
vecchiolarry
Hello Everyone, I have just gone through this entire thread to review who is on the wish list. And, in talking to my friend, Elaine Stewart in LA, she has updated me on some people's condition..... Those who are still in a competent condition to be interviewed: Olivia DeHavilland, Jennifer Jones, Celeste Holm, Joan Fontaine, Tony Curtis, Arlene Dahl, Patricia Neal, Ernest Borgnine, John Gavin and Jane Russell. Those who are in dire straits, so to speak: Jane Wyman, Shelley Winters, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Van Johnson, Deborah Kerr, Glen Ford and Richard Widmark. As for Anita Page: she saw her at someone's tea party (I forget who's) 2 weeks ago and Elaine said she's still blonde and wears lots of bright red lipstick and she's around 95 (age and weight!)...... Gloria Stuart was there too, and she's about the same age..... Both still are cognizant!!!!! So, Robert Osborne better get his act together and lobby some of these people harder. Surely, when Olivia's book comes out (whenever is that, anyway??) it would be good publicity for her to go on his show, don't you think!!!!! edgedrv
Larry, is your friend Elaine Stewart the former actress who briefly worked for MGM in the early 50s? I always wondered what happened to that actress. Of those people you mentioned Neal and Russell have already been interviewed by Osborne. Jones will probably never consent to an interview due to her basic shyness. She is the one of three actresses along with Eleanor Parker and Joan Fontaine, I would want to see interviewed even if it is doing DVD commentary for one their starring films. John Gavin, I have met and I am under the opinion that he wants to forget his acting career. As I once said before I don't think DeHavilland will fly over from France just to be interviewed by Robert Osborne. A good idea would be for Osborne to do a group interview with several MGM actresses including Arlene Dahl, Ann Rutherford, Marsha Hunt, Marge Champion and yes Anita Page who I have seen around at functions in L.A. kimbo3200
As edgdrv recently mentioned, I would love to see Eleanor Parker. I recently saw two of her movies - One for the Book with Ronald Reagan (one of my favorites) and The Naked Jungle. I really enjoy her movies; any movie she is in, I'd watch it. A lot of people forget about her, sadly, even though she made some great films. I also would love to see Marsha Hunt. Recently I watched her in Raw Deal and she was good. She was hit with that blacklist scandal I believe in the late 40's-50's (or it hurt her career in film at least), but she made a lot of films in the 30's and 40's. She published a wonderful, interesting book, called The Way We Wore, I believe back in the 80's. There are a lot of pictures of the fashions and she talks about her movies. It's a really neat book. She is also in a new movie, an independent release, entitled Chloe's Prayer. It is supposed to come out this year, I don't know when, and it will probably be a limited release. Another person who would be great to interview is Ann Rutherford. She was great in all the Andy Hardy movies and, of course, Gone with the Wind! I've read interviews with her and she seems to be very upbeat and talkative, so she would be great to interview. I bet she would have a lot of stories! vecchiolarry
Hi Edgdrv, Yes, Elaine is the Elaine Stewart from "The Bad and the Beautiful" and "Young Bess" at MGM. I met her when visiting Lana Turner on 'B and B' set and have always been friends with her. She was never utilized very well in the movies (always played the bad-girl, but could sing & dance with the best of them) and so lost interest in her career. She did love the parties though and I got her invited to the best!! She retired when she married and has 2 kids and grandchildren now. She's 75 now and grey haired but still a looker. She was friends with Ann Miller, Loretta Young and Zsa Zsa Gabor but doesn't really pal with too many old MGM'ers anymore. I'm visiting LA in September, so will look her up..... edgedrv
Larry, thanx for the info. I always thought Minnelli used Elaine Stewart to her best advantage in BAD AND THE BEAUTIFUL and BRIGADOON, but I thought MGM wasn't interested since Stewart came in right at the end of the star system. Didn't she do some TV game show in the 1960s?
vecchiolarry
Hi, Yes, Elaine was on a game show owned by her husband, Merrill Heater, called Gambit. I think that was in the 70's. Elaine came to MGM when Louis B. Mayer was boss and after he left, Dory Shary started getting rid of most of the actors. Lana held on for about 3 years but by 1956, they were all gone. Elaine was out by the end of '53. Larry
