WATCH TCM not working

Recommended Posts

When I select and movie and select PLAY on the film page nothing happens.  It acts like I didn't even select it.  I've tried restarting my computer, logging in and out, and 2 different browsers (edge, chrome).  I use WATCH TCM all of the time with no problem.  I had this problem first thing this a.m. but after a couple of refreshes it worked.  Now I can't get any movie to play even after all of the previous steps.

FWIW, I can stream the live movies (EAST and WEST) but still can't PLAY on demand any previous movies.  The PLAY button turns blue when I hover and click it but it appears to do nothing.  Nothing is being loaded or changed anywhere on the page or trying to from what I can tell.

Win 10 & Google Chrome... two "bad" choices (IMHO), Oh and MS Edge, too!

Welcome to the wonderfully frustrating world of WATCH TCM, ON-DEMAND!
To repeat the oft repeated and much paraphrased quote: "You Aint Seen Nothing Yet!"

This latest piece of WATCH TCM crapola was noticed and first posted about yesterday (7/11/2018) late afternoon.
(See those dated posts in the following thread.)

http://forums.tcm.com/topic/187092-new-tcm-website/?page=3&tab=comments#comment-1779554

Since "it" began, it comes and goes, and repeats again (functionality wise)...
You may be able to watch a movie at one moment, and then not the next.
Also Noticed that the Live streams appear not to be affected, and can still look at the clips, trailer, and intro videos, even when the ON-DEMAND movies refuse to load.

As is most often the case, these current woes are being innitiated by "someone" at TCM.
"They" may be trying to "fix" something else, but in the process keep screwing with the ability to WATCH TCM movies ON-DEMAND!
Only "they" know what they are up to and why... and, as usual, TCM isn't telling any of their subscribers about any of it!

Rest assured, as invasively screwed up as Win 10, MS Edge, and Google Chrome are, what is currently happening has nothing directly to do with any of our Operating Systems, or our choice of Browsers.
It is strictly TCM behaving badly, as it too often does, and only "those" at TCM know when (or if) this latest (of a long and ever growing line) of TCM inflicted problems will be "resolved."

If "Patience" is a virtue, then yours will be repeatedly tested, again and again, by TCM.
If shared misery offers any comfort, then you are far from alone with WATCH TCM ON-DEMAND!

The problem is still ongoing. Albeit sporadic.
Have no idea what the TCM "techies" are attempting to accomplish.
Aside from the recent sporadic WATCH TCM ON-DEMAND failures, I've not noticed any other obvious (post 6/20/2018) changes... (good or bad).
TCM does what they do incognito, without forewarning. We generally only notice the negative post effects (after the fact), So who knows.
I will not consider this issue "resolved" until I have spent at least a week or more without encountering it.
Then I will still remain apprehensive, as no doubt some other (minor or major) issue will arise within a month, as has been TCM's apparent routine for going on a year now.

In the middle of running through the catalogue of films on WatchTCM, I was suddenly asked to sign in via my cable subscriber, and every time I tried it, the website claimed there was a problem and I should try again.  The problem is not mine, however, it's TCM's!  Plus, if I click on the Contact Us or Help links, I get a warning message from my browser telling me there is something fishy with the certificate and I should not proceed.

I think that TCM's digital team is busy building two sites and constantly reconstructing -- there is the Streaming channel, Filmstruck, and WatchTCM.  It's frustrating to experience these growing pains, but these are my favorite channels, so I grin and bear it.  ?

I do not think there is a single cable/internet option out there that is more inept than TCM.  Problems with the updated (read 'NO LONGER FUNCTIONING') Watch TCM component; TCM Monthlies that arrive 2 weeks late or not at all; TCM online courses that are filled with misinformation (TCM Mad About Musicals); TCM site components that don't open when the link is hit.  Most unacceptably, emails sent directly to the TCM email address provided that never receive replies.  My guess is that these TCM internet components are staffed by youngsters who couldn't care less about TCM's movies or its target audience.  It's a job for someone on their way to somewhere else so if the functions stink, who cares because I'm on to bigger and better things.  Customer service means nothing to these vacuous subservients.

We've been (once again) having problems with the TCM streaming app with FireTV and and Playstation Vue.   Restarted the device, cleaned out both data and cache and still no joy.  TCM really needs to consider the future, people are cutting the cord at a faster rate then anticipated, the future is on demand streaming.   BTW the new app is a step back IMO.

App is working again, I had to log out and log back in through my provider (Playstation Vue) to get it to work again.

Watch TCM was not working for me as well but it is now fixed using Chrome, and that's fine since I've pretty much stopped using Firefox.
Within seconds of starting a movie, all the controls and timeline would disappear.
They now stay visible. Pause, play, close captioning, moving the timeline slider all work.
I sent a fairly detailed email, (around Oct. 5th), to their helpline with screenshots of the controls going away, descriptions of the behavior, that others were having similar issues and that without at least play and pause, the website was useless to me.
I got a basic auto reply to my message, so was not sure if anything would happen.
I said if they fixed it I would join the forum and let people know, so, happily, here I am!

I hope it is working for others as well.

Well, it's been a while but here I am again. The TCM on demand portion is currently not working for me on Firefox or Chrome. I can bring up the list of films but when I click on one it won't load. I just clicked on watch live and the movie immediately opened. Anyone else currently experiencing this problem?

Thanks

Andy G.

Andyg404, Wunderlong: Unfortunately, I have had this "access" problem with "tcm on demand" while streaming on numerous occasions.  My cable carrier is Verizon, and today, when I mistakenly thought that tcm's OWN technical problems were finally corrected, I receive the message "your subscription does not have access to this content", which is nothing but garbage because every time I contact Verizon with this repeated problem, they tell me the same thing over and  over again--that there has been no change by Verizon to my channel lineup and that I am still a tcm cable subscriber.  When I don't watch any other tv channels, this is a big problem because I am paying Verizon big bucks each month to access only tcm (my other family members are a different story, but they don't pay Verizon, as I do!)  When will tcm get its technical act together so that its viewers are not repeatedly inconvenienced and frustrated?

Hi,

That problem has been discussed on the board before and it took a while to clear up then. Currently that's not what's going on with my system and I have Verizon as well. But I see that when I posted about having no access I didn't do enough research. There is a problem with all the new movies loading. The last movie that I can load is Isle of Fury. The next film in rotation is Men in Exile and from that point forward none of them load. This also has happened in the past and now I'm wondering how long it will take to fix this time. I'm going to try and contact TCM but that's never been successful previously and I don't really expect to hear back now. I'd like to hear from other members if they are experiencing any of these problems. I find it hard to believe it would be just the two us.

Andy

Same problem here.  This is the third time this year I've been unable to view Watch TCM using Google Chrome.  Click on the play arrow and nothing happens.  Had a friend try and open Watch TCM on Safari and it worked fine.  Any remedy to this?  I'm needing me some Joan Blondell and Dick Powell real bad!

Also same problem here.  Everything loads up to Isle of Fury and then nothing loads.

Edit: as of last night 12/17/2018 everything was working again!  Wanted to see the girl eating tree movie !!

I get a black screen and a long error message that reads ‘blah blah blah error 1’ on 9 out of ten movies I tried to load on the watch tcm app on an iPad pro. I’ve got a 175 mbps feed, I’ve used the app forever; and this is a new ‘feature’ the army of coders inserted with the last app update. Thanks, TCM! Why don’t you send the coders home, quit screwing around ‘improving’ the app, and if it ain’t broke, don’t pay people to break it!

I wasted an hour rebooting everything, uninstalling and reinstalling the ‘watch tcm’ app, signing in and out and back in. Nope. Same dysfunction. Black screen, error message. This needs to be fixed pronto please.

And while you’re at it, go back to the prior version of the user interface instead of the ridiculous mess we got with the last ‘major upgrade.’

And you could get the ‘watch TCM’ on demand films linked up with roku as well. Why that didn’t happen long ago I will never know. I can watch every streaming service EXCEPT TCM via roku on my flat panel tv - why no TCM, if I’m a cable subscriber with TCM service?

I just went into the site and it appears to have been fixed. I hope I don't come back in a couple of hours when I'm ready to watch a film to say different. Thanks to those who let me know I wasn't the odd man out.

Andy, I had the same issue you posted last Sunday. Signed up as new user to respond but had to wait for validation so have not checked back til now.

The issue you posted about cleared up the next day. I figure they were out for the weekend and fixed it when they got in.

Not completely though. There is one show that still won't load:

Elvis: That's The Way It Is
1970. 1h 48m. Documentary

It is soon to go out of rotation so looks like I'll miss out. Does any one else have a problem with this show loading?

I noticed the same thing on "2001: A Space Odyssey" last month. I get the impression that TCM is hard to get through to so I have not bothered to contact them. Have you had luck with any response?

Looks like new shows are slow to update. No new ones have been added since "Cover-Up" from early Monday morning.

Howdy Slim, welcome to the wonderful horribly frustrating world of WATCH TCM (ON-DEMAND).

These TCM shenanigans are "old school" and have been repeated many times (too many times) over the years.
Whenever TCM appears to have "straightened itself out" a bit, it proves to be only temporary.
The only positive thing that I can personally say about it is that since TCM's last "remodel" and "spyware" update (last June 2018) the viewing problems experienced at my end have been of fewer incidence than what "we" believed were the worst case scenarios experienced in recent years. That's not to say that those days won't return with a vengeance, as this is TCM we're talking about.

Problems with signing in, Movies not streaming as they should (i.e. truncated, postage-stamp, no audio, freezing, stuttering, or simply not loading or playing at all) have all been too frequently repeated in the past.
They eventually seem to "self correct" without rhyme, reason, or explanation by anyone at TCM.
No one (that I am aware of) has ever received anything but a generic response from anyone at TCM.
Reporting problems on these boards appear to be an exercise in futility as well, as the MODs have said (when they do rarely chime in) that they are only able to forward our concerns, but clearify that they are not Techies associated with TCM and are otherwise powerless to remedy anything regarding TCM's recurring streaming issues.

The only observed (nebulous at best) benefit of posting such issues upon these boards (aside from the company of shared "misery") appears to be the occasional ability of fellow posters to assist each other in perhaps ruling out or confirming certain technical issues.

I read your post too late to validate the Elvis documentary issue you recently posted about (I'd seen both it and 2001 numerous times and didn't re-watch either this last time).

The most recent serious crapola I experienced here was in trying to WATCH ON-DEMAND HELL TO ETERNITY (1960) that TCM aired "live" this month on Pearl Harbor Day (Dec. 7th).
It is a loose depiction of real-life ww2 marine Guy Gabaldon, known as the "Pied Piper of Saipan."
As depicted in the movie, Guy was an East L.A. kid, orphaned and taken in by a Japanese family during the depression. Guy spoke fluent Japanese and after his foster parents were interned he joined the Marines.
Guy was personally responsible for the surrender of well over 1,000 Japanese soldiers and civilians during the Saipan campaign. He was recommended for the Congressional Medal of Honor, but never received it.
However Gabaldon was a short little Hispanic American kid, not the tall blue eyed anglo as depicted by Jeffrey Hunter in the movie. The film glorified Guy's ww2 exploits, but overlooked the reality of Guy's ethnicity, and the multitude of issues experienced by minorities serving in the U.S. armed forces during our last Congressionally declared war.  A good movie that could have been a great movie were it not for those oversights.
Anyway, be that as it may, TCM presented a beautifully sharp video presentation flawed by the fact that at 32.36 min minutes into the movie the audio cut out, turning it into a silent throughout the remainder of the "film".
I reloaded and attempted to re-watch several different times on different days before the film finally disappeared from the que last week, all to no avail.
Same exact audio deficit each time. Beautiful picture, sans sound.
I watched all of the movies that aired that day, and it should be noted that this was the only presentation with this problem.
This is a relative rare TCM problem, and I might note that the previous time that WATCH TCM made this film available ON-DEMAND, no such problem existed!

Let's see, one positive that I can report is that after several months with various repeat showings of the same truncated version of the THE BLUE ANGEL (German language version) the very last time it aired (a month or so ago) it played completely through without a single hitch.
So, with TCM we win some and lose some...

Regarding the "slow to load" observation. This is a major problem that TCM has oft repeated in the past.
Generally speaking, TCM has been able to license for repeat WATCH TCM ON-DEMAND viewing about 85-90% of the "live" broadcast content. However when these apparently unscripted "delays" occur, and when (or if) TCM eventually "recovers" these movies, the remaining ON-DEMAND time is never retro-prorated, so instead of a full 7 days of ON-DEMAND viewing availability we only get what time that's left (a few days, a few hours, or nothing at all).
It is sometimes difficult to determine which movies TCM has actually leased for repeat ON-DEMAND viewing as they never let us know per advance schedule what they are. However during evening, at the end of a "live" broadcast, TCM may present that light blue screen informing viewers that the picture is "Also Available on WATCH TCM ON-DEMAND."
So whenever such a screen does appear, and yet the movie does not show up upon the WATCH TCM list (generally within 3-4 hrs afterward), one can be fairly certain that person or persons at TCM are NOT doing their job!
I happily report that most (if not all), of the Disney films that aired this week had that "Also Available on WATCH TCM ON-DEMAND" screen at the end. However, as has been observed, nothing beyond  COVER-UP (1949) which aired late night this last Monday (12/17/2018) has shown up on the diminishing WATCH TCM ON-DEMAND list of titles.

As with all of these blatant "errors" it appears that those in charge of making the WATCH TCM streaming services function as they should are again, "asleep at the wheel" (if not totally absent).
TCM has demonstrated again and again that they have no one present to monitor quality and control of their streaming features (or, at best, only intermittently so).

TCM consistently promotes WATCH TCM ON-DEMAND streaming and yet provides no tech support for it.
And while TCM's live broadcasts remain relatively constant and mostly trouble free, For an ever growing number of TCM subscribers that consistently watch TCM via WATCH TCM ON-DEMAND streaming, TCM remains anything but constant in quality, aside from the consistency that it fails it's viewers on a regular basis.
WATCH TCM ON-DEMAND subscribers appear to be a neglected and "silenced" (albeit ever growing) TCM viewer audience.
As anything TCM, viewers have no viable avenue to communicate any of this when it occurs, or after the fact, either via reporting, emails, phone, or snail-mail... TCM has deliberately made communicating with them a "non-option".
I do not wish to discourage any one from trying, I just wish to inform that as far as I am aware, not I nor anyone that has posted in any thread on these boards has reported successful communication with TCM about anything. (That is aside from the generic responses and solicitations from their "sales" department.)

Objectively, I must state that though the WATCH TCM ON-DEMAND feature has relatively "improved" over the years (at an ever increasing cost to the privacy of those that utilize it) it has also been consistently troublesome and very far from universally perfect.

You have been forewarned, so Use it at your own discretion...

Hi Stephan.  As I mentioned in another thread here, what is most frustrating is that no one at tcm cares even to the extent of posting a response here.  That is not only frustrating but infuriating.  If the "on demand" access problems lie with a browser or a cable carrier, and I don't believe that they do as they lie with tcm, then why doesn't someone from tcm bother to check the message board to see what problems their users are having?  I wonder how long tcm will be in business, but I guess they have unlimited funds from their very generous benefactor, Mr. T.  Very lucky folks.

slim: There is no way of predicting which films will run and which won't.  I had no problem accessing the Elvis documentary but had a problem accessing the most recent "on demand" films.  Now I haven't had any new "on demand" films for several days, which is something new for me but not for other users.  See my other comments about tcm not caring even to the extent of posting a response to the messages here.  That, by itself, is beyond annoying!

The Mod just can't keep their itchy little finger off of that delete key.
Last night I made a couple of posts in two different threads (this one and another) related to these recurring WATCH TCM ON-DEMAND problems. Both were deleted!

I agreed with the above, and stated that rather than forward "our" concerns to anyone "on-high" at TCM, that the apparent Mod "response" here was to either ignore or delete any post that correctly pointed out that TCM staffers were again Not doing their job.
I suggested that perhaps they considered our posts to be "fake news" and unworthy of any response.
Now my conclusion is that they simply "Can't.... Handle the Truth!"

What is going on with the Watch TCM website? No films have been added in awhile and when I click on the splash screen, for example, "Woman of the Year" graphic - there is no "Play" button to be seen. I can view "live" on air broadcasts from both coasts just fine. But when I go to select a film to watch from the inventory, all I see are the same ones that have been up there for at least a week - nothing has been added (not even "Woman of the Year" contrary to their splash screen graphic!). What is going on? This is in both Chrome and Firefox on a desktop computer. Are they going to discontinue the streaming site?
