Edythevanhopper
Thanks, Kid. The director of an AFI top movie from the 50's fashioned a few savory names for his characters. Some are apparent. A song from this film was made famous and her surname was used by the lead actress . Name the film, star and real source.

Edythevanhopper
This is one of the essential comedies, well-known for its poor audience approval at the opening in a Pacific theater. It previewed again in a different theater and it became a sensation. Now you have to find the leading female character's name...her song will give you the answer to the original singer of the song. Edythevanhopper
Another clue, then. The leading lady plays a uke as part of her act. What I'm looking for is the movie and the inspiration for the name given to her character.
lavenderblue19
The only film I can think of off hand is *Some Like It Hot* - Marilyn plays the ukekele and is named Sugar Kane Kowalcyzk- don't know why Billy came up with that name. If it's right, maybe that will help someone to figure out the rest.
Edythevanhopper
You got 3/4s of the crazy question Lav. The rest I'll concede. We all know Spats and the bunch are gangster names, Sugar "Kane" is a reference to Helen Kane the Betty Boop girl who first sang "I wanna be Loved By You". Your turn to choose. lavenderblue19
Thanks. Edythe that was a really good question, it would probably better in one of the trivia threads. Sorry didn't think it through to the conclusion. next A man tells another man about the advice his father left him with, and that was all his father left him. Name the movie? flashback42
Okay, let's try this one.:.Orphaned sisters, 16 and 11, get away from their foster families in order to be together. They are in their late mother's car, and they manage to stay inconspicuous when they hit the road.
flashback42
The sisters scrounge food and gas money, camp out in the homes of people on vacation, and generally stay under the radar. The younger girl turns out to be the more practical. The older one has distractions. Occasionally she, uh, she rides in cars with boys.
flashback42
(89,416). Mid-1990s. Color. The practical younger girl occasionally contributes voiceover narration. At one point she points out to the audience the big sister's ability to ignore and deny the growing evidence of her pregnancy. When forced to face the truth, Big Sister goes to a clinic and asks for an abortion. This is refused because of her age. There is no parent to give approval for the request. flashback42
The abducted store clerk, told to phone in an excuse for her absence from work, finds that her employers are just fine with that, and that no one will miss her, be worried about her, or come looking for her. She had spent a long time in the nursing home where her father spent his last years, dressed like a nurse and looking like another employee. After his death, working in the baby-goods store, she had dispensed childbirth folklore, posing as an expert on the subject. She had the girls fooled on that point. Kid Dabb
I've been hoping I would recognize some part of this, but I'm pretty sure I haven't seen this film. After 7 clues, I'm lost.
flashback42
At over 340 Views, there has been some interest, but I guess it's just too obscure. It is on TCM's list, with a brief synopsis. 1995's *Manny & Lo* has Mary Kay Place as the maternity-shop clerk. The older sister, Aleksa Palladino, seems to had a career mostly in regional TV work. For me, the prime performance is by 11-year-old Scarlett Johansson as the younger sister, and the most practical of the three. Amazon has it at some quite attractive prices, both VHS and DVD. I may go that way just to get another viewing of it. Open Thread
