DownGoesFrazier
This film is not as well-known as MY MAN GODFREY but is similar in overall theme.
DownGoesFrazier
Hint: It was released around the same time as (maybe slightly after) MY MAN GODFREY. It is not as well-known as MY MAN GODFREY, but it IS well-known. mudskipper
Clue: In addition to talking to an imaginary character, Wayne is also seen steering a paddlewheeler ferryboat, full of refugees, 300 miles to Hongkong...

mudskipper
"Blood Alley", starring John Wayne and Lauren Bacall, was the film. This is one of those anti-communist films during the cold war in the early fifties. At the start of the movie, John Wayne was confined in a cell, a prisoner of the Chinese communists. To prevent himself from being brainwashed, he invents an imaginary female (who is never shown in the movie) named "Baby". For some reason, I think as a gag by the directors, even when he is out of prison he continues to talk to her for about three quarters of the movie and even introduces her to Bacall. The refugees he was ferrying were supposed to be fleeing the communists since Hongkong was a British Colony at that time.... Your thread, Metz. cmvgor
Thanks, metz. Mid-1960s. Western. Color. An Eastener goes West, has some rough experiences right away, toughens up.
cmvgor
Made at a time when the Western was in decline, but tells a pretty good story. The tenderfoot is goaded into a fight, and proves himself a competent boxer, but he's up against someone who doesn't use rules. He is saved when a bystander steps in and kills the other guy. He invites some unfortunate attention; in a bar, orders buttermilk.
cmvgor
The film pays some tribute to past Westerns; many support players, even in walk-on parts, are performers with long backgrounds in earlier Westerns.
cmvgor
The newcomer takes a dangerous job that others don't want, guarding a shipment of a mine's payroll. He kills a man who attempts to rob the shipment, then discovers that there was a price on the robber's head. You can actually get paid for killing certain people! He has found his calling. cmvgor
Act II describes a 'decline and fall' trajectory as the man hardens into a ruthless hunter, tracking down wanted criminals to collect the bounty. He becomes quite good at getting close without being discovered; and he turns out to be an ace with the sawed-off shotgun. A young companion joins him, they work well together. cmvgor
The star has done a lot of work in support and second-lead roles, but was not often the lead. In this story, his son took the role of the bounty hunter's young companion.
cmvgor
Nearly 60 Views with no attempts to answer The decline, once started, does not reverse. He deals with bad people that others do not want to face, and even the people paying the bounty fear him and they avoid him. He becomes a drunk. In his cups, he kills someone who shouldn't have been killed. Then there's a bounty on his own head. A real surprise ending re the identity of the man who tracks him down for the final reckoning. ???
