Edythevanhopper
Thanks. The Behind the scenes facts of this 'early '50s film are some of the most famous. Its director went to his leading lady's dressing room and told her to act and talk like Eleanor Roosevelt. After thinking about it, said "That's the best piece of direction I have ever heard of." DownGoesFrazier
Name two male actors in classic film who totally changed their image, persona, and principal film genre as they got older Edited by: finance on Jun 21, 2013 5:42 PM
Dothery
Well, Bogart commented on his change of image himself in an article I read once. He said "They sent me over to makeup and put a toupee on me. The word had gone out: Clean up Bogart." I suppose you could say that did happen with him in about 1940-41, when the gangsters were gone and the new Bogart had arrived. Frank Sinatra (of all people) did pretty much the same thing, in his case starting with musicals and moving into drama in From Here To Eternity, The Man With the Golden Arm, and The Manchurian Candidate. I don't know if you were thinking of these guys.
DownGoesFrazier
Good try, but I'm thinking of two others. hint: from musicals to noirs.

lavenderblue19
Thanks. This film was the debut for a very well known actor. He had studied for the lead part in the film, believing that was his role. When he got to the studio he was informed that he wasn't playing the lead, he would be the third lead in the film. It's considered a noir. Instead of the strong leading man, he plays a weak, cowardly man who likes his booze a little too much. Actor and the film??
JamesJazGuitar
Van Heflin in Johnny Eager?
lavenderblue19
No, sorry, not Heflin and Johnny Eager, however it is a 1940's film.
JamesJazGuitar
Kirk Douglas in Martha Ivers? (with Van Heflin getting the lead role?).
lavenderblue19
Correct. It was Kirk's first role. He left NY by train, knowing the role, believing he was the lead,. He was picked up at the station in Hollywood, by a studio rep who broke the news to him that Heflin was lead, and he was now #3. It's now your turn to post a question.
