DownGoesFrazier
In one of Hitchcock's post-1939 films, the lead male actor was forced down his throat, much to his dismay. Film? Actor? Who did Hirchcock want for the lead actor?
cujas
Hitch didn't want Joel McCrea for *Foreign Correspondent*--he wanted Gary Cooper. (Also he didn't want Bob Cummings for *Saboteur*--think he wanted Coop for that too).
DownGoesFrazier
No. In both you mentioned, he wanted Cooper, but he grudgingly accepted MacRea and Cummings. The one I'm thinking of, he REALLY didn't want. (I'm currently reading a book on Hitchcock)
cujas
The only person I know about is the Louis Jordan issue in the *Paradine Case*--Hitch wanted Robert Newton. But that wasn't a leading man role--Of course he didn't want Peck either, but don't remember who he preferred.
DownGoesFrazier
Peck is correct. He really wanted Colman or Olivier. Your thread.
cujas
I must have read the same book as you. This actor had a hard time getting started because no one would take him seriously. People thought he had too much money and social status to really want a serious acting career.

cujas
This young man lost his father at an early age. So a number of actors acted as surrogate fathers to him. Maybe this influenced him. At any rate he was a world-class athlete in his youth--in sports associated with the rich.

cujas
William Holden came from a nice middle-class Pasadena family. The young man I'm describing was partially raised in Europe--spoke several languages and had an Operatic artist in his immediate family. He was in his youth a world class athlete in the sport displayed in Hitchcock's *The Man Who Knew Too Much*.
