lavenderblue19
Not sure who his preference was but I've read that Jack Lemmon, Steve McQueen and Brando were considering the role.

lavenderblue19
I'll guess Jack Lemmon ? since that really makes that bit of trivia really interesting.
DownGoesFrazier
Yes. Newman wanted Lemmon. Zanuck wanted Beatty. Goerge Roy Hill wanted Redford. Hill prevailed. Yours, Lavender.
lavenderblue19
Thanks. This comedy was a huge success. It's not part of a series (like The Thin Man). This film used 2 character names and the same 2 actors who played those characters in a film that was done 4 years earlier. Can you name the 2 films, the characters and the actors?????? lavenderblue19
One of the films won an Oscar, the other was nominated for an Oscar. 2 same character names, same actors played the 2 roles in both films.
MilesArcher
I was going to post a question asking for the era when the movies came out. I was thinking of "Buck Privates" and Buck Privates Come Home", but those movies were six years apart. When you mentioned the Oscars, I thought some more and came up with "Back To The Future" (1985) and "Back To The Future Part II" (1989) with Michael J. Fox and Christopher LLoyd. The first one was an Oscar winner for effects and the second was nominated. However, since there was also a part III, I guess they could be considered as part of a series. So, can you tell us the era that the flms were made and were the Oscar nominations for best picture?
MilesArcher
Before you answer my last post, I think I have an answer. "The Great McGinty" (1940) and "The Miracle Of Morgan's Creek" (1944) both featured Brian Donlevy and Akim Tamiroff as McGinty and "The Boss", respectively. The first won an Oscar for writing, the second was nominated for one.
lavenderblue19
Perfect answer Miles. McGinty was Brian Donlevy in both *The Great McGinty* and *Miracle Of Morgan's Creek* and "The Boss" was Akim Tamiroff in both films. Preston Sturges won the Oscar for best writing of a screenplay for McGinty and nominated for best writing for *Miracle Of Morgan's Creek* . . Great thinking, Miles. your thread. MilesArcher
Thanks. I had been thinking of leading actors in both movies, but when that occurs, the second one is usually a sequel to the first. As you know, sometimes leading characters in one movie may be supporting characters in another. I immediately thought of "McGinty" and "Morgan's Creek". I checked the years of release and the Oscar nominations, and I had my answer. Now, there were two movie comedies that were both fairly big hits that were also made about four years apart. In this case the second one was indeed a sequel to the first. The lead actor and actress in the first one also play the leads in the second one, but they play different characters from their original film roles. One of the supporting players is in both films, but in different roles, as well. The first one was made a few years before lavenderblue was born. The second one came out about the time she was born, or maybe just after. Can you name the movies and the stars? By the way, I have a feeling that lavender is a little blue this morning, so here's a little clip to help cheer her up. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t66iSkxq7AY

MilesArcher
You got it, lavender. I hoped that the clip would brighten your spirits a little. By the way, the original title of the English folk song was "Lavender's Blue". As you probably know, I'm close in age to you, and I grew up with Roy Rogers as one of my cowboy heroes. The original "Paleface" movie was just on TCM recently, and Robert O. mentioned the sequel in his closing remarks. I wish they would show it sometime. There's one scene where Bob Hope shares a bed wth Trigger. Can you guess which one gets most of the covers? Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed Burl and Beulah and the kids. Now it's your turn again. lavenderblue19
Thanks. I had to think about this one. I didn't hear RO's backstory. I think the clip may have "triggered" thoughts of western films. Excellent question. Next One: There is a famous classic early 50's film that is not a religious film, but critics and reviewers have made mention that the film does have religious undertones. The main character has 2 different names. One of those names could be interpreted as having religious significance. Film and the character names??? lavenderblue19
Absolutely Correct, mr. 6 . I wonder how many viewers think of *The Day the Earth Stood Still* as having religious under and overtones. Mr. Carpenter is the name Klaatu chose to use on earth. You're so smart, mr.6.
