HollywoodGolightly
Well, I guess some people will naturally feel that it is Walter Huston's film - and he really is great in it. But I think the movie wouldn't work without Barbara Stanwyck, because it really needed a very solid actress who was capable of portraying someone who would be willing and able to outfox even someone like T.C. Can't think of anyone who'd have done a better job than Barbara did here. Given all the scenes at the Herreras and at the Darrow strip, she also probably has more screen time, too. movieman1957
*Does a woman's love do this to a man? Or are all men so full of themselves that* *they eventually revert to blowhard? Once you have our love, do you have to be such* *jerks?* (JackFavell) Yep, we're all blowhards. Look at Cowboy Chris! Biggest blowhard on this board. Me, on the other hand, I'm a gentleman. MissGoddess
I'll reply more fully later but regarding T.C.'s "giving". The "bottom line" for me ( ) is that he DOES give. I dont really care about motiviations for giving from a father so long at he DOES give. I have known the kind of fathers who go on and on with involved explanations about how giving should be "voluntary" and not "with strings" and "only because you want to" and if the person "deserves it" or has "earned it". IN OTHER WORDS what he's really saying is: "I just got myself off the hook from giving anything at all." I don't think T.C. is that way at all, even if his giving is based on ego, who cares so long as he DOES give and he does so cheerfully.

HollywoodGolightly
It's a lovely view. Anyway, back on-topic - did anybody think about whether or not Vance and Juan getting together would have been considered miscegenation in the 50s?

FrankGrimes
Hey, Quiet Gal. Here's a moment where I think Rip does show he has some real feelings for Vance: Rip wants to make sure Vance understands what she's about to do. He thinks well enough of her to show concern. rohanaka
Hello my dear Grey friend.... You are right... I think that IS a time when he is showing his concern for Vance... I gotta tell ya... you have caused me GREAT distress today... ha. I felt compelled to go back to my screencapping (I only THOUGHT I was finished... ha) And while I was rewatching certain parts of the film, I found a WEALTH of things I never thought of before. (I really appreciate your instruction Miyagisan. It has made watching certain films even more fun for me) :-) And in fact, I have to say... after my most recent review of things.. I have even changed my original position on my buddy, RIP. If you will bear with me just a little big longer... all will be revealed...
HollywoodGolightly
> Rip wants to make sure Vance understands what she's about to do. He thinks well enough of her to show concern. That is correct, friend-o! Well, I meant to listen to the DVD audio commentary earlier but didn't have time. Maybe I'll get to listen to it sometime today. movieman1957
With some of the talk of Wendell Corey going on I thought people might be interested in a film tomorrow. He costars in "Killer Is Loose" at 10:00am EDT. Also starring Joseph Cotten and directed by Budd Boetticher. (It is not a western.) Now back to our regularly scheduled ramblings. HollywoodGolightly
Sounds like a good recommendation. I want to get better acquainted with Boetticher's films that aren't westerns.
HollywoodGolightly
Listening to the DVD audio commentary, I just learned that in the novel, Vance and Juan actually got married.
FrankGrimes
Hello my dear Grey friend. Uh-oh. That means there's a hangin' a comin'. Howdy, Quiet Gal. I gotta tell ya... you have caused me GREAT distress today... ha. That's my usual effect. I felt compelled to go back to my screencapping (I only THOUGHT I was finished... ha) And while I was rewatching certain parts of the film, I found a WEALTH of things I never thought of before. Very cool! (I really appreciate your instruction Miyagisan. It has made watching certain films even more fun for me) You are welcome, Danielle-san! I have had the exact same feeling about screencapping. It's amazing how much you can pick up when you watch a film with subtitles while also looking to take "little pictures." It does bring you closer to the film. This is why I now look to rewatch a film before discussing it. Case in point, The Far Country. Miss G was talking about Ronda Castle (Ruth Roman) and all I had to go on was my memory and the perception I carried of her since my last viewing. I just watched the film again and now I feel as if I have a better grasp on Ronda. And if I take screencaps for the film, I will know even more about her and the film. And in fact, I have to say... after my most recent review of things.. I have even changed my original position on my buddy, RIP. If you will bear with me just a little big longer... all will be revealed. Hmmmm... you have certainly piqued my interest. Why is it that I feel like you are going to say you now like Rip from start to end? And I do have some words IN FAVOR or your Rip, too. But I will wait until after you have spoken your peace. I shall expect your call.
HollywoodGolightly
I have almost finished listening to the audio commentary on the DVD of The Furies - the guy obviously knows his westerns, and he knows a lot about Anthony Mann westerns in particular. He offers a lot of interesting insights (many which haven't been mentioned here). One thing that is almost funny, though, is how he keeps saying that there is so much phallic stuff in the movie. He says that the scissors are phallic, that the cacti in the desert are phallic, and I think he even says something to that effect about the mountains that are so characteristic of Mann's westerns, including this one. All in all, it's not a bad audio commentary, even if he does sound like an old-fashioned film professor.
HollywoodGolightly
I finished listening to the audio commentary of The Furies. Wow, a lot of great insight there. One little detail that struck me as interesting was how the line of T.C. about the queens on the deck of cards being honest is a little concealed reference to Barbara Stanwyck's character, because she was often called the "queen" (she was in two westerns in the 50's which would have "queen" in the title).
