JackFavell
Ro - I have to clarify for you - I DO NOT own all those movies! Good Lord, I'd be BURIED if I did - those are actually all the westerns I've ever seen. I also like that you place Fort Apache high up on your list. I really like that one too. Except I forgot *Monte Walsh* (Lee Marvin), dang it. fred - that's a wonderful list! All great movies. I think I have Western Union, but haven't watched it yet. And now I really have to get Tall in the Saddle! EVERYONE likes it. Thanks for confirming *Wagon Train* for me. Sometimes I think maybe it's just the right movie at the right moment, and I don't trust my own judgment. MissG - I keep feeling guilty about *Stagecoach*. I'd be willing to bet that it, as well as SWAYR will move up on my list one of these days. That's the great thing about Ford - his films are so watchable and entertaining that you always get something different out of them each viewing. wouldbestar
Okay folks, anybody wanting to take pot shots at FrankG will now have to go through me. Frank, thank you for the Wikipedia website. I now have a new source for information and have been utilizing it tonight with great results. One earlier birthday gift that is totally appreciated. Thank you. I am amazed at the number of great movies on all the lists. Some films on them are unknown to me and when I return from my travels I will get down to checking them out. You all have already introduced me to so many I had never heard of and for that I am grateful.
rohanaka
HELLLLLLLO darlin' Miss G: have quite a few on dvd-r and DVD, as you guessed, and am currently updating my looooong list. I hope to have it done soon. And no, I won't bother with even trying to list all the ones I've actually seen, my memory isn't good enough for that! And I may just put the total number down, rather than try to list each title I own. I can just imagine it is a DOOZY of a list, youngun'. If you decide to only list just the final total.. I hope you will at least let me know what is your most FAVE Western dvd (among all the others) that you own that you would turn to FIRST... if you were in the mood to watch a good one. I THINK I can guess.. but do not want to. ha. (My "pegging" skills are NOT as good as some folks around here and knowing my luck.. I'd miss it by a mile, ha) I'm impressed with YOUR list, because you have a really nice spectrum of A to B titles in your collection. I have the same Duke 25 Pack, and I think Chris and Grimes do, too. Ha. don't be TOO impressed, ha. I have some pretty "scroungy" copies.. a lot of the ones I have are really bad VHS home made tapes. But I am at least glad to have them anyway. MOST of my TRULY fave westerns I have finally managed to get a copy of.. but some I still do not have. And OH I just have SO many titles that I do NOT own yet that my list (in order of preference) REALLY is not as accurate (in terms of my fave westerns overall) the further down on it you go. sigh... someday maybe.. It's fun to see so many of the same ones on all our lists Ha.. western minds think alike! I was also curious to see where Stagecoach would land on various lists. I have to say this film is only one I REALLY have gotten to love in the last few years. I don't really have a reason why.. but mainly because I just had not really remembered it (except for that GREAT shot of the Duke standing in the road w/ his shotgun as the stage coach approaches) It was a LONG long time between my early memories of this movie and my more recent ones and that is likely the main reason for me that I did not rate it higher until recently. But I DO love it. And PS: I bet that new DVD is a thing of beauty! You and Fred have inspired me to order that Western Pack with Canyon Passage and The Texans Woohoo.. we can watch together.. at our BIG BBQ bash. ha. And PS.. we will just WAIT for that potato salad youngun'. I know it is NOT fun waiting and waiting for things like that.. but as the old witch said..ha.. "all in good time, my pretty!" (ha.) Soon it will all be a memory and THEN we can have a great big potato salad FEAST! ha. (and PS if I remember right.. we were going to DRAGGGGGGGGGGG out making the stuff anyway (to give ourselves PLENTY of time to sit around and watch more movies..ha). So by the time we gals get all those potatoes PEELED.. by THEN you will be back in business and we can munch to our hearts delight!! PS: Jackie... Ro - I have to clarify for you - I DO NOT own all those movies! Good Lord, I'd be BURIED if I did - those are actually all the westerns I've ever seen. Well duh.. ha. My mistake. But still.. it is GOOD to see so many fun (and interesting) titles on your list.. and YOU have really given ME some good recommendations since you started dipping your toesies in the "western waters" ha. So I am glad you came over to the "cow town" part of the world, ha. I also like that you place Fort Apache high up on your list. I really like that one too. It is another one that I honestly had LITTLE memory for until recent years. I always liked it..but only RECENTLY after veiwing it in the last few years and gabbing and blabbing about it here have I truly come to enjoy it as much as I do now. It is a great story. (OH that Thursday..ha. WHAT a piece of work! ha)

CineMaven
"Anyway, there are a lot of films that I only WISH I owned and are NOT on this list and so I know I would have to mix them all in an throughout THIS list if I were to be making a ?fa- vorite westerns of all time list? (and PLEASE don?t? ask me to do THAT, ha...)" Wow!! Ro, your list looks pretty extensive to me. What films do you WISH you owned? Is there even anything left?? rohanaka
Oh golly, Miss Maven, I pale in comparison to many collectors on this board... I have such a puny list, ha. In answer to your question... if I could own my "dream list" ha.. let's see.. I'd START by wishing for a copy of Shepherd of the Hills.. OH my golly.. I have only seen the END of this movie.. and never seen it all the way through. But I would also love to get my hands on a copy of several others.. I do not have Red River, My Darling Clementine, The OxBow Incident, How the West Was Won, or The Big Country (just to name a few) and those are all films that I have seen and enjoyed very much. (I COULD go on and on...and ON, by the way, ha.) I could also stand a copy of some of the early Ford Westerns (that I have yet to see) I am SO very glad to have 3 Bad Men, but I know there are a few others.. namely The Iron Horse that I would like to get. And while I am on Ford.. I wouldn't mind getting BETTER copies of the three Cavalry movies (Ft Apache, Rio Grande and SWAYR) those are ones I only have on VHS and the tapes are pretty bad.. I taped all three of them on USED old worn out vhs tapes, ha, so the sound is poor and the picture is jumpy from time to time. (But HEY.. at least I have them! ha) I need to just get OVER my "technophobia" and give in to the whole temptation of online ordering. ha. I am SURE that would open up a whole new WORLD of possibilities for me. But THEN I'd be bankrupt. ha. (I would likely be like a kid in a candy store, ha) Oh well.. if we always had EVERYTHING we ever wanted.. wouldn't life be boring??? It's nice to have a dream now and then. :-) (Oh.. and by the way, I also only dream about a full time housekeeper... especially on days like TODAY!! But since THAT is not going to happen I better get a move on.. the kitchen floor is calling my name! ha) Edited by: rohanaka on Oct 9, 2010 1:31 PM

OllieTSB
WouldBe writes about "anyone wanting to get out FrankG has to go thru" WouldBe. Uh... did you see how many shots Bette Davis fired off as she nonchalantly walked off that porch? I would undoubtedly take the Cowardly Lion approach - hold up what's-left-of-FrankG and hope the 6-shooter would be out! Back to these lists...boy, is there a sneaky person in here or WHAT?!! ha ha... These are some great films. I really dislike watching FORT APACHE. It's one of those great films that I just can't stand watching much - because Fonda's such a great jerk. When I watch this film, I keep wanting to google a question, "When was fragging inventing by a jerk officer's troopers?" I do enjoy the Victor McLaglen scene with the men at the Indian agent's shack. "'Tis a man's work ahead..." Love that scene.

Don't MAKE me have to break out my frozen rope now. HA! But buddy.. pal... friend o' mine.... you JUST can't go throwing those sorts of phrases (like how you "dislike watching Fort Apache") around that way.. even in jest.. ha. The GREY Guy will seize on them and then before you know it.... World War III. Oh golly.. just thinking about it... I'd better go check my rope supplies and sharpen my hat pin (oh.. and loosen the chain on my giant octopus too) just to be on the safe side.) Ha. Oh..and PS: I TOTALLY agree w/ you about Fonda's Thursday.. ha. NOBODY ought to be THAT good at playing someone THAT awful. ha. wouldbestar
I just saw that Leona Gage, the 1957 Miss USA who was disqualified for two marriages and two children, has died. She "won" as Miss Maryland after defeating Charlene in the state pageant. Since it was too late for her to compete, Charlene, then Verna Charlene Stavely, sued Ms. Gage but she and her military husband had little in the way of funds. She made a few TV appearances then faded away-so did the husband as I remember. Charlene of course had the last laugh as we are talking about her on this thread. FrankGrimes
Howdy, Lively Gal -- I'm impressed by your venturing out west. For you to actually purchase the Boetticher box set says a lot. I like your open mind. How do, Piecemaker -- I KNOW you had to put McLintock further down.. (though I STILL think you are just being "stubborn" ha.) but HOW (oh how oh HOW????) could you ever list Once Upon a Time in the Blah Blah Blah ahead of.. # 3 and/or #8?????????? OH.. and let's not forget # 11... sigh... I'm the one with the varied tastes around here, that's how! My list isn't just Ford and Wayne! What ARE we going to do w/ the likes of you??? ha. Oooooohhhh, I know! I know! You're gonna thank me for being a gentleman! Actually.. all kidding aside, and to be honest.. I am IMPRESSED that you have them as high up as you do.. I am glad you are giving Mr Ford such high ratings on your list, sir. Well, lookie here! Thank you. do I recall a certain someone saying they had recently watched Hell's Hinges?????? I am surprised to not see THAT one on your list. Where do you rate it if I may be so curious as to ask?? No, I didn't watch that one. I now have it on DVD, though. FrankGrimes
But I guess I could be cajolled into creating a list of favorites...... maybe tomorrow. There you go! Now you're talking. Your top ten is all I'd really need, but I'd love to see your favorites in some kind of order. My top ten features two Fords and one Wayne (in a Ford film). The other eight films are not Ford or Wayne. In my top twenty, I have three Ford films and two Wayne films (both Ford). But I do have four Stewart and four Mann westerns; two of them together. 1. Once Upon a Time in the West 2. The Wild Bunch 3. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance 4. Shane 5. Destry Rides Again 6. High Noon 7. For a Few Dollars More 8. 3 Bad Men 9. 3:10 to Yuma 10. Forty Guns 11. The Searchers 12. Johnny Guitar 13. Devil's Doorway 14. Winchester '73 15. The Naked Spur 16. The Professionals 17. Man of the West 18. The Shooting 19. The Ox-Bow Incident 20. Firecreek Usually, whenever I see a list of favorite westerns, it's typically a run on Ford or Wayne or both. I'm not saying they don't deserve such a run, it's just that it tells me that person likes a certain kind of western, hence my saying my list of favorite westerns is more varied. Of course, the further one extends a list, the more the list can become varied. That's why I mentioned top ten.
MissGoddess
Wow, I didn't know *Man of the West* was your favorite Anthony Mann western. that's a big surprise. I thought *The Naked Spur* was your favorite, or *Winchester 73*. Oh never mind. I must be tired. It's your FOURTH favorite. But I didn't even think it would crack your top 20. *Devil's Doorway* is a recent addition. FrankGrimes
Oh never mind. I must be tired. It's your FOURTH favorite. But I didn't even think it would crack your top 20. Man of the West used to rank about 12th on my list. I think I had it as my second favorite Mann western until I watched The Naked Spur again and then Devil's Doorway. Devil's Doorway is a recent addition. It is. It's the most recent. And four of the westerns in my top ten are films I've actually watched for the first time in the last two years: Shane Destry Rides Again 3 Bad Men 3:10 to Yuma

FrankGrimes
I often jostle things after a recent re-watch. I can never keep the same rankings for long, except maybe the top two. It's hard to budge my very favorites, but I do rearrange them a little. I noticed that, too. A good mix, as you say. You even have a funny one ranked highly. There are different styles to be found on my list. Conversely, my favorite films noir are less varied.
rohanaka
AAGGGH. Grey Guy... what are you trying to do?? Give me NIGHTMARES?? Posting that pic of UGH.. that awful FRANK guy. ha. Great.. NOW I am going to have to break out the PEPTO for sure just so I can fall asleep.. ICK! I'm the one with the varied tastes around here, that's how! My list isn't just Ford and Wayne! That's true. You do have quite the "variety" and you are DEFINITLY not predictable.. except in how UNpredictable some of your choices are. ha. I am definitely more set in my ways..ha. I DO like my Duke and Ford, ha. But I also like a LOT of non-Fordie/non-Duke Westerns though my list does not reflect that as much.. (especially if you look at the top 12 or so) because I was only making a list of movies that I actually own... and I do tend to try and get my faves (if I am going to go out and buy a movie) But I am sure my list WOULD look different.. somewhere after maybe.. say.. #8 or 9 if I were making a list STRICTLY of favorites ( both those I own.. and those I only dream of, ha) No, I didn't watch that one. I now have it on DVD, though Well now THERE is your next assignment, mister. (sometime when you get the chance) Do not let that one get lost in your "dust laden" mountainous pile of unwatched movies. (HA!) It is really a great film.. I am SO glad Jackie brought it to our attention on the message board here. And I remember thinking that it would be one you would really like (but then again, I STINK at "pegging" you sometimes, so WHO knows, ha. You are MUCH better at guessing movies that I will like.. but as we have already established.. ha.... I am MUCH more set in my ways than you, ha) my top twenty That is some list, sir. I am really impressed at how WELL you have taken to the Western world considering you have said that it was NEVER something you were interested in until the last several years.. So ok.. ha. I guess you will ALWAY have a special place in your heart for Once Upon a Time in the Pass the Pepto PLEASE.. ha... But.... 10. Forty Guns 11. The Searchers 19. The Ox-Bow Incident #10.... ahead of 11 AND 19?? REALLY??????????????????????????? Oh good gravy.. ha. What, oh WHAT are we going to do w/ you??????? And PS... I can KID you about all this because I KNOW you know I am kidding... ha. One thing I will ALWAYS say when it comes to picking favorites is that EVERYBODY has a right to their own choices. ha. GOOD gravy.. movies are NOTHING if not subjective and I LOVE to watch and see how many different (but also the same) choices often turn up when the lists start getting put together. But in the meantime, ha, having said all that, it will NOT stop me from giving you grief (becase what would be the fun in THAT???) HA!
rohanaka
Yeehaw, Miss G!! If I am reading your list right.. the "bold" numbers you have listed out to the side indicate your #1-10 favorites.. and I DID guess right, ha. I was pretty sure you had TMWSLV in that #1 spot. You have a great collection, kid. I bet it was a lot of work getting all those titles. I see a LOT of my "dream" films on there, ha. Once you are up and ready to go.. be sure to bring them on down when you come for the BBQ.. ha. German Potato salad AND some good old Western flicks.. now THAT will be a good time for SURE! ha. (oh golly... wouldn't it be fun if we really COULD have a "film fest" BBQ?? ha.. It has been WAY so very long since I got to sit down and and enjoy some really good westerns.. Oh.. AND almost as long since I had some good BBQ too.. (and GOLLY.. I even LIVE in one of the BIG "BBQ" regions of the country too.. so how sad is THAT?? ha) Oh boy.. do I ever sound pathetic, ha. :-) Oh..and by the way.. the big suprise for me on your list was your #5 choice (The Far Country) I did not realize that one was so high "up there" in your esteem. It is a great film though, so I should not be SO suprised. (oh golly.. that Walter Brennan.. sniff, sob) ha.
