Western Movie Rambles

I saw quite a bit of The Big Country showing on regular TCM (not TCM HD) and frankly it didn't look much different than my 2001 MGM DVD copy, EXCEPT for a rather glaring "L" shaped white object near the top center of the frame during a portion of the film. ???? This definitely is not visible on the DVD, I've watched it a dozen times. This object seen on the TCM broadcast is confirmed by others at IMDb forum. Not to mention that posters were questioning if the TCM broadcast was an actual restoration copy because it seemed to have similar issues visible on the DVD of dust, dirt, and other picture issues. I missed the host intro to the TCM broadcast, apparently from what I've heard a guest was on discussing the film's restoration. There was a restoration done in 2007 by the AFA for the film's 50th anniversary. Anyway, from what I saw on standard TCM the film did not look restored or at any rate different from the DVD print- other than that white object flaw which is onscreen for at least a few minutes of film time. I wish I could say exactly where i saw it in the film but can't recall.

Has anyone seen "A Man Called Horse"? I watched it and while it is certainly a different approach to an Indian centered film I don't think I cared much for it.

The story goes that an Englishman is captured by a Sioux tribe and is initially kept as a prisoner but works his way into a full membership in the tribe.

It has beautiful locations and gives a great sense of an Indian life. However, it seems slow at times, is hard to understand and can be pretty gruesome. Save for a captured Frenchman in the same tribe there would be virtually no dialog.

Richard Harris has the lead. I just had a hard time getting into it. It must be me.

i saw part of it and shut it off. i didn't like it all. it's based on story by the same writer who wrote the man who shot liberty valance. i don't know why i didn't like it (besides the violence) but i suspect it was because of the slow direction...and richard harris. great actor, but not one i like. he's too cold. i liked him *gladiator* though.

Apparently they can honor a restoration outfit without using restored prints. A few months ago there was a 24-hour tribute to the UCLA film preservation team that had at least one public domain copy of a Sherlock Holmes film. It was no match for the restored edition in my DVD collection.

I'll start The Bravados (thanks for the reminder, I spaced) if you watch The Third Man.

You've got it, Spunky.

But I really need to reply to what Laffite and Movieman wrote about The Bravados and what Quiet Gal wrote about Diary of a Lost Girl.

You should pick out a fluffy film for me to watch.

Don't let me stop you from replying to Laffite and movieman! I've just been glancing at the thread once in awhile. You won;t spoil anythign for me.

You're not, I'm just being lazy. :D

fluffy.... hmmmm.

Yes! What 30s comedy should I watch? I need something to rip apart! :P

The first two that pop into my head are *To Be or Not to Be*, which isn't actually thirties, but would make a great discussion, and *Love Me Tonight* which will make your head explode.

In between is *Midnight*.

Or for something light but with a more serious tone, *History is Made at Night*. Nooo.... maybe not...I have a feeling you really will rip that one to shreds, and I couldn't bear it!

I seem to have "night" in every title. Weird.

I know you are a Carole fan, maybe *Nothing Sacred* ?

I have to admit I'm DYING to hear your take on Love Me Tonight. If you watch that one, I'll eat my hat. :) By the way, it's a musical. Heh heh! You're going to love it.

A musical? Talk about real torture! I've seen parts of it because I took some caps from it. At least Myrna is lurking in the background. Maybe I can just focus on her and forget about Chevalier and MacDonald. :P

Why do I already sense me hating the film and thinking it to be unfunny? You just want to hurt me! I think I'll need to take a film noir shower with Gloria Grahame after this one!

Yeah... that's right. You can do that.

You're going to hate it, but it's an important film and I think you should see it at least once. I find it charming. I hope you'll be surprised by it.

Howdy, Denver -- Yeah... that's right. You can do that.

I may need to focus on Myrna!

I'll be surprised if I like it. But it's Lubitsch. I want to watch more of his films.

Howdy, Fordy Guns -- we've been discussing lots of YOUR movies lately so don't start whining senor Jake.

I have to whine! What would I be without it?! And my movies are good! Your movies are dreadful!
