lzcutter
*Who is the Kool Aid kid?* That would be me. So called and identified by a new poster who posted questions about my film expertise in a couple of different forums. For the record, I am a film maker, a preservationist, an author and a student of film history and film preservation. If that is considered Kool-Aid by some, consider me spiffed. moviefan1951
> For the record, I am a film maker, a preservationist, an author and a student of film history and film preservation. Don't be modest... no need to leave out the part about being one of TCM's 15th Anniversary guest programmers.
lzcutter
*Don't be modest... no need to leave out the part about being one of TCM's 15th Anniversary guest programmers* Which had no bearing on the original posts, posters or what I referenced or my participation in this thread. I was trying to talk about *Rio Bravo*, Howard Hawks, his reasons for making the film and the western history of expansion. That is all. That some newbies want to call what I talk about Kool-Aid that's okay with me. Film History has a place here. At least, I think it does. When the time comes that it doesn't, I'm sure I'll pick up the hints.
moviefan1951
A thousand apologies if you believe it's not something which should have been mentioned just yet. It just seemed to me that if you were saying something about yourself, and since it's very possible we'll eventually be rambling about "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon"... But let's not go off on a tangent, the "Rio Bravo" discussion is still going strong.

movieman1957
Rey: Thanks for the write up of both films. I have copies of each and have long thought of the similarites but also recognized they are two different ways of handling a similar story. I quite agree about Caan. That may be why he is much more part of the story. Nelson is fairly deadpanned through his role. Caan gives his role quite a spark at times. The joking about his hat adds another light hearted element to the proceedings. Another small but important element of "El Dorado" is Christopher George as the hired gun. A kind of professional courtesy goes on between Wayne and him until the inevitable climax. If they had to remake I'm glad they toned Honeycutt's part down as a comparison to Brennan would have been inevitable even if Honeycutt had tried to be "Stumpy." No one would beat Brennan. Speaking for myself, the ONLY "hints" you can ever expect from me, Kid, is to keep it coming. MORE Kool Aid! I want more!
MissGoddess
Hey Rey! I'm so glad you brought up El Dorado! I haven't seen that one all the way through in a while, but I've always enjoyed it purely for the pleasure of seeing Wayne and Mitchum together on the screen. What a pair! Arthur Hunnicut is always a welcome sight in an oater, I like how his honeyed drawl masks a pretty sharp tongued wit. I find the constant allusions to the advanced age and physical condition of the two leads very funny. The ending is great, too. The only thing that I could say keeps this movie from being totally enjoyable is that female character they threw in as a sort of "love interest" for James Caan. She annoys the heck out of me. I would rather more time had been given to developing Maudie's character and that they'd just written out the younger girl altogether. But, I guess it was a box-office decision more than anything else. I look forward to more you have to say---and if you have any opinion on Rio Lobo? I can't remember anything about that one, frankly. It's been years since I last saw it.

movieman1957
One of the first CDs my son ever "bought" (we paid for it) was by Dean Martin. He must have been 9 or so. He saw a Martin and Lewis film and loved him.

rohanaka
If we aren't careful, some of Molo's known aliases could get innocent parties convicted of HIS crimes... To protect the innocent, maybe we should change his name to..... *Ramblin' Molo* instead... (still a nice name for a desperado... AND a motivational tool to maybe spur him on... ) Ha. moviefan1951
That name has a nice ring to it! But of course, so does *ramblin' rohanaka*. So, my copy of *Rio Bravo* should be in later today, and I'll be watching it this evening. B-)
MissGoddess
If we aren't careful, some of Molo's known aliases could get innocent parties convicted of HIS crimes... You're right! We wouldn't want there to be any CONFUSION, now would we. To protect the innocent, maybe we should change his name to..... Ramblin' Molo instead... Sounds like a folk singer! (still a nice name for a desperado... AND a motivational tool to maybe spur him on... ) Ha. Yes, he might feel some compunction to live up to his name. Unlike "Shiftless" who already does....
