movieman1957
In "Directed by John Ford" Jimmy Stewart, Wayne and Henry Fonda both talk about the grief Ford gave them just because he could. He would ask their thought on something and then let them have it in front of everyone for it. I'm not sure if it is in the same film but somewhere Harry Carey, Jr. tells his story too. It must have been Ford's way of showing everyone he was in charge and having a little fun as well.

Kim1607
My dad passed away last June and he was always a big cowboy movie fan. That's what he called them. I have always been able to take them or leave them. I recently got on a Gregory Peck kick and just got The Big Country from Netflix. I loved it. His character was so true to himself and just so intrinsically romantic in all the ways that word can be defined. I may have to buy this one. MarianStarrett
Hi Kim, and sorry to hear about your father. Glad you enjoyed "The Big Country", it's a great western. What other westerns have you enjoyed?
movieman1957
There is a movie worth rambling about soon. I also like "The Big Country." Many great performances, Burl Ives, especially, among them.
Kim1607
Thanks for the welcomes. And the sympathy about my dad. Watching The Big Country really made me miss him. I kept wondering if he had ever seen it. And Burl Ives was a revelation. I've not seen him in many movies so that performance surprised me. I am bad with titles but I liked Vera Cruz and The Treasure of the Sierra Madre which I'm sure is a cliche. I have 3:10 to Yuma on the DVR waiting. And a Randolph Scott western, one his later ones. rohanaka
Hello... very sorry to hear about your father. It is good to have those memories of him though. And it sounds as if you are having fun discovering new films. I always enjoy that... and now I also have an "ever expanding" list of wanna see films too because the more I see.... the more new ones I want to find to watch as well. And PS.. The Big Country is an excellent film. It was actually what made me follow through w/ my thoughts on starting this thread as it is (as the movieman pointed out) a good one to ramble on. It has been a while since we discussed it here.

Kim1607
The Big Country is one of those movies I keep thinking about. And worrying about what happens after it ends. That is the sign of a good movie. I am so glad I finally got brave enough to post. And is it correct that TCM won't be showing a movie if it was 20th/Fox? My next quest is to see The Gunfighter, since I have mentioned my Gregory Peck obsession. It's not at Netflix and the Fox Movie channel's website it not good at all. Kim1607
One of my best friends has raised her two kids to be classic movie buffs. I didn't do it right, my college daughter will watch one every once in a while but she is really into current movies. That is fun that she knows John Wayne. Has she seen all the Shirley Temple movies?
MarianStarrett
Kim, TCM will sometimes play Fox movies, just not as often as those from some other studios. I believe earlier this year they played "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid", and other Fox titles like "Love is a Many-Splendored Thing". Realistically speaking, it might be a lot easier to just buy the DVD, though. It comes in a set with "Rawhide" and "Garden of Evil" and doesn't cost a lot. Kim1607
I just went to the beginning of this thread and saw that it was started to discuss The Big Country. What a coincidence and I'm glad to be adding to it even though it's late to the discussion.

rohanaka
Yes.... she liked most of it, but some of the story was still a bit over her head... I am sure when she is a little older, she will understand it more.

Thanks for the answer and I guess that's why I never see Letter to Three Wives on TCM either. That's the first classic movie I remember watching as a teen. That's the first classic movie I remember watching as a teen. If you're able to record it from some other channel, that's always a good option. However I've heard a lot of those movie channels have some kind of copy-protection going on. Either way, hope you'll watch the movie soon and tell us about it! Kim1607
Wow what a contrast. Last Saturday I watched The Big Country and came away thinking "I finally understand why people love this genre". This Saturday, Duel in the Sun and I came away thinking "this movie makes me remember why I never liked Westerns all that much". From the relationship between Gregory Peck and Jennifer Jones (no chemistry) to the father who was a cliche, it just didn't work for me. I'm glad I watched it but I won't be buying it. It was interesting to see Lillian Gish as the mother.
redriver
Some people don't like BIG COUNTRY either. I do. I find it very entertaining; the characters well drawn. It's good writing.
