Western Movie Rambles

Here's the hat discussion:

There's a character in a bowler hat in Red River, and someone makes fun of it. The bowler guy hits him and says something like"I like to wear this hat." That little thing turned into a whole character in El Dorado.

>We used a high hat in El Dorado and this was a derby- but we've used all kinds of strange hats. If you're making a war picture or a cowboy picture, it's often hard to distingiush between characters. Nobody knows who's which character, so hats take you a long way. In Red River, we had one man with a derby, another with a Confederate hat -all kinds - it's only a desire to keep them different. Just as in Hatari! Usually they walk around in those safari hats - well, I had a fellow in there in a knitted skullcap so that you actually knew who they all were even from a distance. Actually Wayne was wearing my fish hat. I wore it in one day and he wanted to wear it in the picture. I sent for a case of them because I knew they'd get lost, and where are you going to get duplicates in Africa?

I like the hat Wayne wore in Rio Bravo - it's falling apart - I believe he'd worn it since Stagecoach and it was old then. He told me your picture was the last one - he had to retire it after that.

>I remember Jack Warner looking at rushes on Rio Bravo and saying, "When's Dean Martin gonna go to work?" "Well," I said, "that's him- the bum in the pink undershirt." "Holy smokes," he said, "it looks like Hawks has got all of Charley Grapewin's old hats." which I thought was a funny line.

Oh for Pete's sake... that has to be the coolest thing I have read in a long time... THANK you for that...

And I LOVE the part about John Wayne wearing his Stagecoach hat in Rio Bravo.... I did not like the look of that hat much in RB, by the way...But I didn't mind it so much because I just figured it was one of those "it's old, it's comfortable, and it fits" sort of things... And that worked for that character... so it worked for me.

But NOW knowing the history of it... I gotta say.. I LOVE that hat!! :-)

And PS:

but we've used all kinds of strange hats. If you're making a war picture or a cowboy picture, it's often hard to distingiush between characters.

Now THAT explains a lot TOO!!! ha.

But alas.... still NO mention of THE big white hat (did I mention BIG) from .... Only Angels Have Wings!! HA!!! Looks like the closest I will get to an explanation is a confession instead....

we've used all kinds of strange hats

STRANGE HATS indeed!!! HA! I am STANDING firm on my position on THAT hat to the bitter end... Ha. That was without a doubt one of the DOOFIEST hat choices for any movie character... (I mean it was CARY GRANT for crying out loud!!) I have ever seen. :P (I know... you are saying now... Kathy... just let it go!!! ha. NEVER!!)

I guess that Howard Hawks fella was just one heck of a "Hat Guy". :-)

I agree on the OAHW hat! and it's hard to make Cary Grant look doofy......but Hawks did it. :)

The parts about Red River and the hats are on the same page as each other. Can you believe it? I was almost jumping out of my seat as I read last night!

> OH my gosh, guys! I went and got my copy of interviews with Peter Bogdanovich last night, and as I was reading the Howard Hawks interviews I found a wealth of information. I think you will get a kick out of some of these quotes by Hawks himself. I am SO sorry - it is long, but it just cracked me up because you guys were _so_ on target in your discussion of *Red River.*

It is a fascinating interview, imho, and I am certainly glad to hear his take on the much-maligned ending - and it also makes me wonder how the movie would have played with Margaret Sheridan in it, as he said he originally intended.

Great stuff, Wendy, thanks so much for taking the time to type that up.

That was a fortunate find, for sure!!

HEY... speaking of HATS.....

Where IS that Mad Hat MOLO??????? He has not shown up for a ramble in these here parts for quite a spell now... I guess my rope and me will have a little work ahead of us... if'n he doesn't show up soon. :P

Howdy, Quiet Gal -- Boy howdy you are on a ROLL lately... You are a

"ramblin' dude" for sure.

Fordy Guns told me to take a 6-month vacation.

But Cherry never did anything bad. I think he was presented to us as a red

herring. The way John Ireland plays Cherry, it makes you think he's hiding his true

face. Did he have the potential to be bad? Most definitely. I could see him turning on

anyone.

That's a perfect way to describe him.... and I think that is why I had such hard time liking

him. He was "the wild card" in this whole story...ha. And again... for a LONG time... I thought

that would be MATT... but I guess this was one time when my "movie watching ESP" was

a bit whacko...ha (ok... I confess... probably only ONE time of many...ha)

You know, you are very right, Cherry (John Ireland) is the grey character in the film. You just

never know with him. Geez, it's no wonder I was fascinated by him. :)

I have never been a big Clint fan... I know I have seen some of his westerns... but

I can't recall that one... I may have to check it out now, if only to see that part of it...

because it was really one of the better parts of RR. I like how that all played out.

I can't see you liking the Leone westerns all that much. For a Few Dollars More is

my favorite of the "The Man With No Name" trilogy.

I've yet to see a poor Duke performance. Not bad.

Some are better than others... but I know I am a bit biased since he is my favorite. I haven't

seen ALL of his movies yet.... but what I have always liked his performance.

The Wayne film I wish to see most is:

wakeoftheredwitch1.jpg

I need to go look those up because I haven't seen ANY of them. Although I have

read a LOT about The Misfits on here... I am not sure why I've never made a point

of seeking that one out sooner.

I'd definitely be interested in hearing your take on The Misfits. It's a favorite of

mine. I really like John Huston's "human condition" films. A Place in the Sun is

another film that I like. It really speaks to male self-esteem, or lackthereof.

Keep talking Mr. "I eat sawdust and LIKE it"... and I will get old Dunson to ride into

town and plug YOU full of holes.... (and little Joanne Dru and I both will do NOTHING to

stop him...ha)

I already know I'm to die at the end of the film. Or is it at the outset? Hmmmm...

Oh... hey... I just thought of something.... I know of a self professed HAWKS fan... who

has been STRANGELY silent in all of this.....

WHERE IS that Mad Hat MOLO??????????? I figured he'd have mosied along in here

by NOW for sure... (I dont' think he ever showed up for Rio Bravo either....) Don't tell me

we have another one of those "Man From Laramie" situations.... Grey Guy.... I think

this desperado has picked up some of your old bad habits...) WHAT HAVE I done with

my rope?????

Old bad habits? I like to think of them as tried and true. I believe Mad Hat Molo was

last seen on the trail with a saloon "singer" who goes by the name Double G. Or was

it Miss G? Let's just hope they saved us some coffee.

I have it on good authority that you will be hearing from him very shortly. :) No need for the rope just yet.

Doubling down at the Sands Hotel circa 1960 no doubt. Dean Martin is dealing and Molo may be on winning streak.

Maybe there are drinks on the house when he returns!

Lord knows I'm thirsty.

Ah, "Wake of The Red Witch." Russell and Wayne make a nice couple. Ok sea adventure with a bit if a surprise ending. It is on DVD as I saw it courtesy of Netflix.

Since you are coming around to westerns and if you haven't seen it (can't imagine why) be sure and watch our same couple in "Angel and The Bad Man." There you get the added bonus of Harry Carey Sr.

Very good! Yes, I'm very intrigued by Wake of the Red Witch and your comment

about the ending has piqued my interest. I do have the DVD.

Since you are coming around to westerns

Coming around? It's been my second favorite "genre," behind only film noir. I also like

horror films.

I have seen Angel and the Bad Man. I watched it last year. That's what got me

on a Gail Russell kick. Ahhhh, Quaker girls.

Howdy, Quacker Girl -- I know you can't be referring to ME (and I know exactly

why, too).

Of course I'm referring to you. So what's my reason why?

I suggest you get onto who is really to blame for your slacking, Shiftless. :P

I am! That's why I'm addressing you. All of these Ford flicks has ruined me. I'm truly a

hanged man.

Forgive my not being sure, since someone else goes by the name Fordy Guns.

I warned you. That's what happens, alas, when an amateur takes on the job that should only be entrusted to the _Marshall_ of the territory. Don't worry, Mr. Shundersen, we'll cut you down

before your face turns green! :P

Ohh, stop. You know there is only one "Fordy Guns." I can always tell by the extreme

snippiness. :P

Too late! I'm already green. I sampled some of Quiet Gal's cooking. I need to get back

on trail to get me some of Groot's beans and coffee. That's fine eating in comparison.

Maybe you need to pass that information along, some don't agree.

We know what made you turn green, and it wasn't Quiet Gal's cooking. You have my condolences because Groot can't help you out there, he's still looking to get his

teeth back! :P

What would I want with his teeth? Gable has them. :P

Well, at least they look good on him.

And I'm not the mean one!

Ha! Aren't you the one who is always telling me to "go to the devil" and encouraging

Quiet Gal to "get the rope"? I could have sworn that was you.

You know, I can finally rank the cavalry trilogy.
