Question for you guys!

I would like to finally address Shiftless' comments about *SWAYR* but I don't want to interrupt the conversation about *Train Robbers*.

Would you rather I PM him or post in the Ford thread in *Movie Rambles* ?

Let me know!

Hiya Ms Cutter...

Speaking only for myself... I am sure it would be A-OK for you to respond back to old Shiftless here. He needs a good "roughing up" before I bring out the frozen rope I have in cold storage... fire when ready little lady. (or at least fire when the board will let you post.... this is getting a bit... ridiculous!) :-)

*NO* !!!!!

Please address SWAYR! I will be very upset if you PM your considerable knowledge to Shiftless, thus denying the rest of us the pleasure of watching him squirm afterwards trying to come up with a response..... :)

MissG - whoaaa! To be Ann Margret........... Look at that MAN. They look so sweet, like father and daughter. Of course, if that had been me, I would have planted a big ol kiss on his cute face....

Hi Wendy! Right now Encore Westerns is showing Chisum and I was thinking of

you and your Ben-a-thon. This one you may enjoy more than TTR. It's a better movie

in my opinion and Ben seems to have a little more to do. He's awfully cute...

Also in the cast are the Mitchum boys, Hanky Panky Worden, and Patrick Knowles

in a lovely role.

Awesome! I'll add it to the Netflix queue...

it's hard for me to tell which are the good Ben movies, being pretty unfamiliar with westerns in general....

but the good thing is, I am making up my own mind about all the different westerns without pre-judging them based on critics' reviews.

By the way, I am halfway through Dobe Carey's book and I am regretting not having shelled out the 46 bucks to buy it autographed. It's wonderful! He is so honest...and you really can see things through his eyes - the eyes of a kid, and a young man, with the perspective of an older man thrown in for good measure. I adore him. The book is a real treasure trove of information. I have to get a signed copy now. Thank you thank you for suggesting it!

And thanks for feeding my Ben-crazed brain with pics and movie suggestions..... there aren't that many people who understand my bizarre movie obsessions.....I am so glad I came here, where I don't seem quite so nutty.....

Howdy Wendy Ben-crazy! Sounds vaguely Arabic...

I'm so glad you're enjoying Dobe's book. It is a treasure, to be sure, and so is he. He really

had me cracking up several times.

The actor playing Pat Garrett (Glen Corbett) in *Chisum* has the prettiest blue eyes...

Wow April.... what a great tribute to our beloved BEN!!

(PS... Wendy.. you're gonna love it)

My favorite part....

"IF I COULDN'T REMEMBER MY LINES, I JUST SAID WHAT I THOUGHT FIT THE SCENE. DIRECTORS SOON LEARNED THAT'S HOW I DID IT! AND IT WORKED OUT OK FOR EVERYONE."

THE COWBOY STARS STARTED AD-LIBBING TOO! "JOHN WAYNE SAID, "IT WORKS FOR BEN! AND IT'LL WORK OR ME!"

Can't you just hear him saying that w/ his great "simple cowboy" voice. (I know I use this alot w/ him but it is just so doggone "Aw shucks, ma'am" . :-)

Hey guys,

I've been trying to get past the wonky boards for awhile this evening.

I'll be posting tomorrow during the day as the boards seem more user-friendly than they do in the evening.

Something about the 6-9 hour (PST) during the week makes them crazy.

Lynn,

Have you experienced the same trouble on the Film Union site as you do here in the boards? I was just wondering whether it would make any sense for folks to try and have a discussion in one of the CFU groups (like the Westerns one or the "Directed by John Ford" one) at least during the times when the boards are not working properly.

Just a thought.

Hi Kathy! I do love that site! I just love that picture f him in the rain gear on a horse in the desert. I wish there were twenty more sites like that.....

In Dobe Carey's book, There are some quotes of Ben's that just crack me up, the way he talks.

Carey describes his own way of dress in the early days - he says that he would always wear a suit and tie, that's just what you did. He thought you had to be a champion roper or something to dress in western clothes. Ben was different - he wore western clothes all the time. Ben called Dobe's clothes "jelly bean clothes".

I am paraphrasing this next introductory section here, and the edits are mine, but the quotes are right out of Dobe's book (I hope that is OK) :

On the first day of shooting for SWAYR, Ben was a little nervous, not as relaxed as he might be, so John Ford called him over and gave him the background for Sgt. Tyree. He told him that he was a reb soldier under Jeb Stuart, and that although he respected Brittles, he wasn't afraid of him like the others ( he waved his hand in the general direction of Dobe and Agar).

"Understand, Ben? That's your job, and you're damn good at it. You're one hell of a scout. Okay, Yeah, that's the idea, kids."-----------"Allright, here we go. Nice and easy now, ready, Ol' Ben. You're Johnny Reb giving these guys the lowdown, okay?"

"I'll try, Mr. Ford, but I'd sure rather fall off a doggoned horse or come flat-out down one of them hills than say this here dialogue. You jes' point out the hill you want me to come off, an' let some other actor say them words."

Ford loved it. "Here's my Tyree."

Aw man... How loveable is THAT???? :-)

Speaking of Carey, Jr. Does anyone else find it odd that he went from supporting player to almost an extra fairly quickly? One year he has a pretty good role in "The Searchers" and then he is almost gone.

I was reminded of this as I watched part of "The Undefeated" the other night and he was hanging around the edges of the movie. I thought that seemed to be where he lived from about 1960 on.

It's not like he didn't work. Plenty of television but he was in "Cheyenne Autumn" and imdb shows an uncredited appearance.

Anyway, back to Ben.

Hi Chris,

Wendy can probably confirm it but I seem to remember Carey said the money

was in television during those years, in westerns mostly, and he had a family to support.

He sometimes worked on several shows in the course of a single day, going from set-to-set.

Hey guys,

Should I mention that I am going to a gathering on Saturday afternoon in honor of the Carey Family? Dobe will be there with his wife, Marilyn and other family members.

I remember reading, I think it was in Carey's book, how lots of the really big time

cinematographers went into television, too, for the same reason. They could earn

many times more for less effort than in features. I remember being astonished

to see Winnie Hoch's (She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, The Searchers, 3 Godfathers)

name on some sci-fi show. Kind of sad....

OH my goodness!!! Please give them our regards! Tell him and his wife I said "hi", they may

not remember who the heck I am but they have been kind enough to exchange a couple

of emails with me and sent me an autographed picture from 3 Godfathers. Dagnabbit,

I'd give anything to be there with you!! And at the upcoming screening of *Stagecoach* with

Dan Ford---I hope you don't miss that either. Sigh.

MissG,

Not to worry, I shall report back here about the gathering on Saturday and the screening of *Stagecoach* with Dan Ford on Monday.

I'm also going to the *Gunga Din* screening on Friday, June 12th. Ben Burtt and Craig Barron will be talking about the sound design and how it influenced their work on *Raiders*.

PS- Thanks for the heads up about Dan Ford at the *Stagecoach* screening. That was the kick I needed to make me buy tixs.
