The films of Jean-Pierre Melville

Recommended Posts

Just watched *Dirty Money (Un Flic)* and it's a great gangster movie, with a very good cast: Alain Delon, Catherine Denueve, Richard Crenna. The train/helicopter scene seems quite memorable, even though they obviously filmed with a limited budget and almost certainly used models for many shots.

Also, it's Melville's last movie.

Last week saw the release on DVD of another great Melville noir, *Le Doulos*, which stars Jean-Paul Belmondo. This is a great noir which constantly keeps you guessing as to the protagonist's true intentions, and I do think it's a fairly unpredictable one. The black-and-white photography is absolutely gorgeous, and it goes without saying that the Criterion transfer is first-rate.

Finally watched the other Melville film recently released by Criterion, *Le Deuxi?me souffle*, which is also pretty awesome, even with a longer, 150-minute running time (the time flies when you're watching this movie). A great movie you won't soon forget. B-)
