Natalie Wood

Gosh, CJ...Natalie had such an extensive filmography, and had such an early start in films, that it's really hard to pick one that is a "favorite". I did like her very much in "Miracle on 34th. St." as a child actress. And, I liked her in "Rebel Without A Cause", also "Spendor in the Grass", and "West Side Story" very much, too. I suppose that I would pick "Splender in the Grass" because I think that it asked the most of her, and she was up to the task. ML

Superb topic! & on that note, has anyone on here, or did they, I should re-phrase-it. See the TV- biopic of Natalie? The British actress playing her was by no-means as beautiful, but was extremely cute & looked stunningly like her 1st born child: Natasha Gregson Wagner-(1970-) as opposed to her mother. As most of these tv-movies do though it skipped over quite a lot. Surprisingly it was helmed by: Peter Bogdanovich?

1 of the most imperative things it failed to deal with was her & also Warner Bros. big-push & desire of her even possibly winning the OSCAR for '65's "Inside Daisy Clover!" She was ridiculously not even in the running for-it however. *Ruth Gordon-(1896-1985) as her mother was though. It's virtually a silent performance by Natasha? My own personal candidate as her best role-not overall film that she just appeared in, like "The Searchers." Her definitive role as Denee in 1961's "Splendor in the Grass"-(she was nominated, but lost to *Sophia Loren in "Two Women")& for those whom saw that television bio-(I had heard of this awhile ago, but *Warren Beatty-(1937-) at 1st really wanted her to portray "Bonnie Parker")

Anyway, exceptional & timely topic & to ML, Holly & the rest See ya' J.S.

Natalie Wood had a beauty and intelligence within her that might best be described as "quicksilver"--I can still hear her as the little girl in "Miracle on 34th St.", murmuring under her breath in the next to last scene in the car, "I believe, I believe"--she was inimitable, no one else looked like her or could break your heart like her. I guess my favorite performance by her would have to be "Splendor in the Grass". The best scene is when her English teacher asks her to read and interpret Wordsworth's poem from Songs of Innocence and Experience and she reads the words

What though the radiance

which was once so bright

Be now for ever taken from my sight,

Though nothing can bring back the hour

Of splendour in the grass,

of glory in the flower;

We will grieve not, rather find

Strength in what remains behind;

In the primal sympathy

Which having been must ever be;

In the soothing thoughts that spring

Out of human suffering;

In the faith that looks through death,

In years that bring the philosophic mind.

Given her early passage, these lines seem doubly poignant.

(****-BIG STARS to: moirafinnie14! That was ever so eloquent & perfect on the use of that dialoge of her Denee role in "Splendor in the Grass!"-(TRIVIA: Although, Natasha did lose Best Actress for-it, it won for Best 0riginal-Screenplay-(William Inge) Her only other shot-(& she really wanted to win an OSCAR!) 1963's Comedy-Drama "Love With the Proper Stranger," opposite my chldhood Hero: Steve McQueen-(1930-80) And back then they had: "Harvard Lampoon's Worst of the Year"-(as opposed to "Rotten Tomatoes" & of course "Golden Razzie Awards,' today.) But, bein' the type of person she was, she was the sole performer to accept her "Worst Actress of the Year Award" & even she noted, she was simultaneously up for that latter OSCAR I spoke of? A bit more on her>*Elia Kazan, a great filmmaker of course. But, he essentially was pretty-creul to her on several shots of "Splendor"-(the water scenes of course! Natasha, always wore a Russian bracelet for good-luck & in particular, since her mother was told by a Russian Gypsy that her 2nd child would eventually drown? So, it of course was always a total fear for her)Mongo, may well get this 1? Does anyone at all have any-info on what is a massive series: "Citadel Press Films of: Natalie Wood?" I have same books on several *Gable/*Tracy/*Cagney/*Bogart,etc & It cites her among others in the back, but NOPE? And, what was her very-first feature film & year,etc? For any of whom may desire to see more on this lady: www.nataliewoodbasilica.com-(be warned though, it's got "Links," for other(s) But this site is a bit tacky)

Thank You J.S.
