AFI to honor Michael Douglas

Recommended Posts

We were just talking the other day about the AFI Lifetime Awards, and I came across this:

*AFI to honor Michael Douglas*

Actor given lifetime achievement award

Michael Douglas will be presented with AFI?s Life Achievement Award at a tribute in Los Angeles on June 11.

Douglas? father, Kirk, received the honor in 1991.

"I am honored and overwhelmed to be included in such a prestigious group of filmmakers. I am particularly moved to be following my father 18 years later," Douglas said.

"Michael Douglas is the rightful heir to the throne of the royal family of American film," said Howard Stringer, chair of the American Film Institute board. "Though he is most beloved as one of the great leading men of the movies, Michael is also a most accomplished film producer and, ultimately, an artist whose films have been elevated in the pantheon of American film."

Douglas won an actor Oscar for "Wall Street" and produced "One Flew Over the Cuckoo?s Nest," which won all five top Oscars in 1975.

He will soon be seen in Peter Hyams? courtroom thriller "Beyond a Reasonable Doubt" and Mark Waters? comedy "Ghosts of Girlfriends Past."

It says in the story that he did:

> *Douglas? father, Kirk, received the honor in 1991.*

Wikipedia listed a number of notable actors, actresses, and directors who never received the AFI Lifetime Achievement Award (including the late Paul Newman). I've been curious as to why the likes of Robert Redford, Gene Hackman, Diane Keaton, Shirley MacLaine, and others haven't received this award yet. I do agree that popularity, ratings, and politics are factors on selecting a particular individual for this award.

Michael Douglas has been in a few good movies, and has delivered some solid performances, but I've never been too crazy about him as an actor. Congrats to him, though.
