Last night I watched Billy Wilder's wonderful movie "The Major And The Minor" at 8pm (EST)............Was it just my cable system or did anyone else experience a few problems with the broadcast? 3 or 4 times the picture would freeze for a while and the audio would continue playing. Just wondering.....

EDIT:

We are sorry to inform that there was a technical difficulty during "The Major and The Minor". We're also sorry for any interruption it may have caused you while viewing the film. We want to stress that there was nothing wrong with the actual film print. While a majority of the time our broadcasts are shown in perfect condition, we hope you understand that sometimes errors happen. Thanks for the inquiry!

Unfortunately, this happens when the orignal print has deteriorated. I think the print was worn out where the frame freezed, but the audio continued. When the film became good again, the movie would catch up with the audio. This is very disappointing if that is the case. This is such an important movie (Billy Wilder's first!), and looks as if it was allowed to get in very poor condition. This is my favorite Billy Wilder movie, and the vhs is currently out of print and very costly for a used copy. The vhs version is fine with no freeze frames (I check it out from my library all the time). They need to copy the video, remaster it and release it on dvd! The Major and the Minor is going to be on again in May, so re-watch it and see if indeed the print has deterorated!

No, this is a phenomenon of the digital age. I learned this little bit about radio and TV digital processing while I was working in radio.

If you were receiving an analog TV signal, and it went out, the screen would go black. But digital signals are the rule today, and the signal is programmed to save a few minutes of information just in case it goes out, to fill any blank space. What you see when the picture freezes is the last bit of information saved at the time the signal went out.

However, more audio than video can be saved in the same space, which is why you'll sometimes hear the sound continue for a time while the picture is frozen.

Since this thread started as something to do with The Major & the Minor, don't you think it's weird they had a night of movies that featured women playing children & the men who were attracted to them. I know they were all played for laughs but it does kind of give you the creeps if you think about it. Yuck!!!

This su@ked because I had not seen this film from start to finish in all these years - always bits and pieces. Finally came my chance to set up the old VCR. The Wife and I sit down to watch it and right at the switch board scene it freezes. Oh well I know they'll play it again.
