MGM: When the Lion Roars

Just finished watching the spectaular documentary "MGM: When the Lion Roars" on TCM. To say the least it enthralling all about the rise and fall of, perhaps, the most legendary movie studio in Hollywood.

Patrick Stewart narrated the whole show with gusto taking us through decades of stars and film clips of some of the grandest movies ever made with commentary by some of the stars themselves.

How sad it was to see it all end with those fabulous sets getting demolished one by one and all those wonderful artifacts being auctioned off. Bless actress Debbie Reynolds who cared so much and tried to rescue

it all but to no avail. Like she said "It's too late now".

To Mongo, I just now wrote a rather lengthy post/article on this magnificent documentary! Glad to see that you caught-it-(I hope you really caught-it though & taped it, for KEEPS?) I certainly have. Around 1996 or so & that was the 1st time. I taped the special on another entire tape another time>6 hours!

(P.S. I don't know if it's for sale or not>aka: Pre-Recorded?) But, I really, really, gotta' nag you fans. "GET THE COMPANION PIECE BOOK!"

As far as that....Kikorian goes, I do know-(see my post on-it) he basically only cared about his wallet & not history. Which great cinema is. It's not just some stupid movie we are talking about here as you know. This was irreplaceable & he just auctioned off as much as he could in 1971-(I don't think Ted Turner, don't quote me though. However, I don't know if they dealt with one another, or not, on this matter? Turner loves cinema & especially it's history)>(his favorite movie is *"GWTW" & when he purchased TCM for example, he had no idea of the massive extra amount of superb-stuff that was stored in the vaults)>(Shorts/ Newsreels/ Robert Benchley bits/ Cartoons, etc) He knew of the flix for the most part from what I understand. So it was an extra-present to find all those Travelogs, etc. Debbie Reynolds-(1932-) as you also noted, really tried to grab as much as she could. Basically, K. Kikorian is scum!!! & essentially even far-worse than a corporate raider, at least in my book anyway.

I don't know about the entire stocks pt. of the deal though. All I know is what he did was in essence the same as burning down the place!!! There are a few buildings left though. It has a little over 40 acres-(from 200!)

I also have the site of what is there now-(for those whom want more info, drop me a line) They at least have a *Spencer Tracy Building, *K. Hepburn Bldg, *Lionel Barrymore & even a *Sinatra bldg. now. But, it's now Sony for the most part-(that's what LA desperately needed too, another bunch of condominium(s) & stripmalls???)

AGAIN, CHECK OUT SAME TITLED BOOK! & good going
