I hae seen both of those, but isn't that painting amazing? It's really one of the most beautiful I have seen. Cinemafan will tell you, that Ben inspired a lot of artwork.

I just wanted to tell you that the Jimmy Don Cox website does not come up properly, at least on my computer. I have already seen it before, but I had to get to it a different way, because it is coming up all typed out as an html.

His face was so craggy later on in years, I just love it. On a horse, he was as graceful as can be....but the thing that inspires me is his soul, which really shines out of his eyes. No wonder they all wanted to sculpt or paint him.....he was just beautiful.

I have to hit the hay now, I am so exhausted. Thank ya kindly, ma'am. You have given me so much today... I truly appreciate it. Night-night.

I can't see him in the "Seachers", what role would he play, Ken Curtiss part? I can't see him as a semi bumbling clod. Not the Jeffery Hunter role, I don't think he would have pulled it off and Hunter is so ingrained in my mind unless they wrote in another role just for him. "The Horse soldiers" I can see him playing a part with no problem. I think another film like you said all by himself. Like Ford did with "Wagonmaster". Ben was an unique actor and I think he could have gone much farther then he did, but considering everything he did a damn fine job with what was thrown at him in life...

I agree that the Jeffrey Hunter role might not have been the best match for Ben, but maybe there would have been some other minor part for him. Ditto with The Horse Soldiers.

And yes, he did do a fine job, all things considered.

I can't see him in a minor part at that point in his career. Again I think another film on his own would have been a big boost in his career. The only other role was Dobies part and like Curtis,I can't imagine him in that part either. He just didn't fit that part.I completely agree with you on "Horse Soldiers"

You do have a very point, it would have been a little bit humiliating for him to have minor parts in a movie at that point in his career. It's just a shame that we didn't see him in more Ford movies later in his career.

*I can't see him in the "Seachers", what role would he play, Ken Curtiss part? I can't see him as a semi bumbling clod.*

Fredb,

I would be willing to bet if Johnson had been in the *Searchers*, he wouldn't have played the character as bumbling as Ken Curtis did. But the big problem would come from who would Laurie choose.

With Ken Curtis, you know she'll ultimately choose Marty because not only is his handsome and all but she has loved him since they were kids.

With Ben Johnson in the Charlie role, that suddenly gives Marty a run for his money in the looks department and choosing Johnson wouldn't seem the bad choice it is with Ken Curtis in the role.

The only other part would have been Brad Jorgenson, Dobie Carey's part, and Johnson would have been wrong for that role.

Perhaps you were thinking of the young cavalry officer, Lt. Greenhill, who shows up towards the last part of the film and is played by Patrick Wayne?

Johnson was too old for that role by 1956 and the role too minor for where he was in his career at that time.

Yes, you're probably right that such a role would have been too minor for where he was at that time. It's probably just wishful thinking, that there could have been a good part for him in that movie - without some sort of re-write or something.

Ford seems to have taken a liking to Jeffery Hunter starting with "The Seachers" followed by "The Last Hurrah" and ending with "Sgt Rutledge". He also recommended Hunter to Director Nicholas Ray for the role of Jesus in Rays production of "King of Kings" Was Ford looking for a replacement for Ben Johnson, I don't know,Hunter was a fine actor and real good screen presence. Just a shame he died so young at age 42. I don't know why that though of Hunter replacing Johnson came to mind. It's just one of those thing that comes out of nowhere.

I think I was the one who suggested that Ben might play the Jeffrey Hunter role, mainly because he was part Cherokee. However, he would have been too old for it, and I did say that the film was perfect as is.

It was just wishful thinking on my part that Ben have a role of that magnitude and depth. It is exactly the type of role that he needed. Jeffrey Hunter is superb. In fact, I never thought he was as good in any other role as he was in *The Searchers*. However, I still think Ben could have done a great job in the role of Marty, had he been cast.
