I'm glad that my two recordings of THE LETTER and LA GRANDE ILLUSION for

my collection are accompanied by "expert" commentary before and after! Once

again, beautifully done. Peter, you're next! I know you'll do great. I may have

to watch your remarks on my recording in the morning, though, because it's getting to be my

bedtime ("school night"). :)

> Lani, if you are dropping in and checking out the thread, I just want to say you were terrific. Great smile and very articulate. Very well done. "Grand Illusion" is one of my favorite films, too.

Congratulations also to Lani for choosing the only foreign movie of the bunch. (Also, I _loved_ your dress!)

Miss G, I understand completely, though it shall be hard to go without hearing your comment until morning. Just make sure your TiVo or DVR doesn't decide to shut down in the middle of the night to update listings like mine does..

Thanks again for the poster.

Hey, how are you feeling about tomorrow night?

It hasn't happened to me once, yet, so I feel safe. I know you'll be brilliant!

Thanks again for the poster.

As Gabin would say, de rien. :)

Oh fine, just a nervous wreck that's all. :D nite nite

I just talked to MsMaven again. They are having a great time in Brooklyn tonight! She is thrilled for all the support. She probably won't get on the boards till the wee hours of the morning, but she says to tell everyone hi!

She was lucky she did not have a "school night" ;)

My dear pal CineMaven invited me to her viewing party tonight as she kicked off Fan Programmer Week, and I thought I'd share my fun there as we watched CM's debut.

She had 15 or so friends over, she provided the hooch and we all brought snacks (I brought cake). She was VERY specific that we arrive between 7:00-7:15 (her moment aired at 8 PM on the East Coast), and other than one person everyone was there on time.

I had previously only met one person at the party, Lynn, who was also CineMaven's guest in Atlanta for the TCM taping. I could tell that this gang was genuinely made up of CM's friends, but also that for the most part they weren't classic film fans...just CineMaven fans. They could not have been nicer as we chatted before the screening, but I was admittedly worried that they might lose interest in a b/w Bette Davis movie --- while supporting their friend, they might not really care for the movie.

Well, CineMaven's masterful intro had everyone glued to the movie from Minute One. Partway through the movie I asked my friend/date (not a classic movie fan) if he was having fun, since we had barely spoken after the movie started, and he told me to talk to him after the movie --- he'd never seen it and didn't want to miss a minute. *The Letter* glues everyone to the screen.

Afterward, we had a toast, cut the cake, and ate snacks. And while CineMaven had a couple of other surprises to show us, I leave that to her to share. Between the time it took to get home to Manhattan from Brooklyn and then write this, I barely have time to get ready for Filmlover's TLTE. But I watched Lani's intro at CM's party in Brooklyn, Lani's outro just now at home in Manhattan, and I am ready to watch Peter's TLTE choice from start to finish. His is actually the one I'm most excited about, I've never seen it!

CineMaven did a fantastic job, and what a pleasure to see that TCM made her look as gorgeous as she is in real life.

You other Fan Film Programmers -- be sure you share your Moment in the Sun with friends & family (and all of us little people out there in the dark).

Sharing this very special night with my BFF CineMaven honestly meant more to me than if I had been the Fan Programmer myself. I'm so happy for my friends!

CineMaven's pal Lynn took photos, so be sure she posts them!

Yikes! Time for *These Lips, These Eyes* ! Gotta go!

So i just watched THE LETTER, because I had to work...AND IT WAS AMAZING!!! I definately loved Bette Davis in this movie. It was nice to see the suttle her. She just seemed really natural in this film. I definately agree with Theresa that that last line, "with all my heart I still love the man I killed!" was one of the best. She completely captured me with the expression that she used and the tearful passion in her voice!!! OOOHHHH...it makes me want to watch it again!!! :D GREAT CHOICE!!! By the way, this was the first time I saw this film...

OMG!!!

OMG!!

OMG!!!

FrankGrimes, Molo (the mention of Gloria Grahame was specifically for YOU guys).

Hello all. I was overwhelmed by the support of my friends tonite...and your good wishes and kudoes to me really really touch me. Chip, you accurately described the party (which ended all too quickly). Everyone indulged my show & tell. My friends may not be classic geeks, but they DO like a good movie...and some had never seen Bette Davis in this movie.

Chip did indeed come to my party and meet my friends. You fit in nicely with everyone and I think they all made you feel welcome. And yes Chip did (INDEED) bring a cake. But not just any cake. On the cake, he had the baker put on a photo of the iconic shot of Bette Davis in "The Letter" shooting that gun. I was so stunned and surprised and truly touched by this gesture.

Folks (fellow programmers), the best thing you can do for yourself is to watch this event with friends. And again to my fellow programmers, I look forward to watching your turn in the red leather chair. (I have recorded the two programmers after me so I can watch them when I come back down to earth).

Thanxxx Chip...and thank you ALL!!! It was an honor.

Great job, filmlover! So relaxed, you're a natural. Maybe they could give you a monthly time slot. I'd watch. Nice little film, too. I deliberately didn't read the plot synopsis, but I was dreading something along the lines of *An Awfully Big Adventure* . Much more upbeat and fun. Really enjoyed it. Thanks.

Wow, CM! Your passion for film shines through those eyes of yours. Hopefully *The Letter* will equal your fabulous description. But you really should have given a spoiler alert for those fast-forwarding through the movie to get to your closing comments. Now I know how it ends! :-(

Again, a wonderful job, ma'am!

Day One is done.

Tonight's Fan Programmers Theresa, Lani and Peter should all be very proud. There wasn't an awkward or self-conscious moment all night.

And the purple sweater, the blue dress and the new suit made each of you look great.

Bravo to each of my "fan programmer" friends.

patful and Kyle, thank you for your kinds words. I have to admit that I was very pleasantly surprised because I felt I came across much better than I ever thought I could and for the first time I think I liked watching myself (except for occasionally closing my eyes a little too long while I am thinking). And I was so pleased that TCM got to present the original widescreen version with language and the minor nudity.

Man, this was so incredible a moment, and while watching the movie I temporarily forgot I was coming back after it to talk a bit more. What everyone out there has to remember is that the fan programmers are seeing these intros and exits for the first time when you are. You can also see from watching them how much Robert Osborne showed genuine interest in each of the fan programmers...and that helped make us feel relaxed.

I am very happy that I was given this great honor. Thank you, everyone at TCM!

The Fan Programmers these evening were great. I've raved about Theresa, so here's my chance to rave about Lani (who looked great in that blue dress) and Peter (filmlover).

Congratulations to both of you! You both came across as serious lovers of film and your enthusiasm was infectious.

We've got some mighty big footprints to follow in over the next couple of days.

Up tomorrow evening is our own MissG with *Gone with the Wind*, Lisa Mordente with *Singin' in the Rain* and one of our newest message board members, CEBandello, with one of his childhood favorites, *Angels with Dirty Faces* !

I can't wait!

Do you hear that distant quiet roar?

It's the wave of joy that is building among many TCM viewers for each one of our own as, one by one, the Fan Programmers step into the arena and prove their movielovin' mettle. Metaphorically at least, Theresa, Lani and Peter all deserve to be drawn through the TCM City streets on the back of a golden chariot with rose petals strewn in your path for your splendid kick-off of this stellar week. You were each so articulate and immaculately groomed, (good choices on the clothes too), I was mightily impressed. Most importantly, you so clearly conveyed your love of the film that each of you chose to spotlight as well as your understandable disbelief about sitting opposite Robert Osborne. You done us proud, kids.

Really a spectacular trifecta of debut presentations! I can't wait for tonight's follow-up on the actual birthday anniversary of TCM with the following lineup. It will be wonderful to see Miss G. on screen and to "meet" Lisa and Rome as well:

Tuesday, April 14

8:00pm ET/5:00pm PT

Miss Goddess

Gone with the Wind (1939)

12:00am ET/9:00pm PT

Lisa Mordente

Singin? in the Rain (1952)

2:00 am ET/11:00pm PT

Rome Mendheim

Angels with Dirty Faces (1938)

I'm so delighted for each of you--it's a bit like the always miraculous sight of seeing a garden bloom before your eyes. Unbelievably wondrous.

Perhaps it is foolish of me to try and follow moirafinnie's wonderful post.... but I really must say that you guys were fantastic!

*Maven* ,

I am SO glad that you pointed out Wyler's ability to reign in Davis, making her performance far more subtle and soulful. I will admit that I never really cared for this movie before. She played everything so tight inside herself, walloping us with that final scene when she finally let it go.... It was marvelous to know all that beforehand, and from such a beautiful programmer.......Thanks to you, the movie has a new convert! I also was much more in tune with the Steiner score because of your comments. The other things I enjoyed greatly this time were the careful pacing, the exquisitely planned use of shadows, and the way Wyler used the camera as Leslie's eyes- seeing what she might have seen. Your intro and outro were first rate, and you looked so comfortable that I would think you have been doing this all your life. I was so moved to see you right up there where you should be. Congrats, babe!

*Peter* ,

I want to thank you for picking *Those Lips, Those Eyes*. I enjoyed the movie tremendously. I am a big Tom Hulce fan, and have always thought Langella was an underrated actor with a grand theatrical quality that was shown off at it's best in this movie. I also felt a connection to this film, since I was in theatre for some time throughout college and my twenties. You looked relaxed and happy, and your comments were wonderfully personal and THAT is what made me appreciate the movie even more. Our own experiences are what draw us to certain movies, and I loved how you tied that in with your appreciation of certain scenes. Thank you for your great plug for TCM as well. All the fans here wish we could tell Robert Osborne how much we care about this channel. My favorite part was in your outro. All through the movie, Tom Hulce made a point of saying, "I don't really consider this moment to be actually happening. It's all a dream I will wake up from." and then, astonishingly, in the outro, you said the same thing about sitting in the red leather chair with RO, and it was so genuine and heartfelt it made me cry. Great job!

> Night, kid. When you wake, it will be your day. (Then the nerves will REALLY start, LOL. But you will be wonderful, trust me.)

Peter you were just terrific. I thought the story about your father and the typewriter

was really sweet. It's marvelous when a film can connect in such a personal way,

as Those Eyes, Those Lips did for you.

Bravo, sir, bravo!

I have a really tough act to follow! Oh my goodness!! :0
