hassan974
An auction of Katherine Hepburn's personal effects will be held soon. While I do not know the exact date of this auction, a preview of the contents will be held tomorrow morning on the television show, Good Morning America. Apparently, Hepburn kept quite a collection of 11x14 stills of herself and among the contents being auctioned are her artwork and her wedding dress from 1934! moviejoe79
Mongo mentioned this sale awhile ago in another forum, but thanks for reminding us Hassan. And for an update, the sale is being held at Sotheby's here in New York on June 10th and 11th. You can view the contents of the sale online at sothebys.com. Some of the estimates for the items seem very reasonable, but I have a feeling that her things are going to sell for much more, just like Marilyn Monroe's did at Christies a few years back. I attended one of the sessions of the Marilyn auction, and people were placing enormous bids on things as ordinary as pots and pans! I have a feeling the Hepburn sale will be similar. And for those of you who live in New York - Sotheby's will be showcasing the items for sale at their galleries on York Ave. and 71st St.
hassan974
Yes, you can go through the entire catalog online on the Sothebys website and it is exhausting to do so. I was interested in the photographs she saved of herself that she saved (not that she was vain, mind you) but the furnishings reminded me of my British grandparents and not my style I'm afraid. It will definitely be a sale of sales and, of course, the sale results will be on the website for those interested in comparing the auction estimate with the final result. grblover
I know this is an old thread but these auctions get to me. Why would you want to sell all this precious stuff? And it is not like the money goes to charity, it goes back to the family! I think it's awful. I also wish Fenwick would of stayed in the Hepburn family. I hear an archit. friend bought Fenwick and won't take it down. He is just raising it and updating lots of things and he may sell it later, he isn't sure. Just is too sad to me. brackenhe
The way I look at it is that maybe her family kept what was truly important & precious and auctioned off TO HER FANS anything of interest. I really don't see anything wrong with this. Isn't that better than putting it in storage where no one would see it or enjoy it. I don't know their financial situation, but maybe there's no money there to start a museum with the artifacts. That's my 2 cents anyway.
Di
You are missing the point. Her family is making a buck off her things and it is disgraceful. Just MY take on it. I won't be back so don't bother answering. These forums are too difficult to navigate.
Di
By the way their financial situation is just fine. They did not need the money.
Grann
I know this is a really old thread but in Oct. Town and Country of this yr. they showed what the Hepburn Estate in Fenwick looks like now. The new owner has done amazing things with the house. It looks beautiful. He raised it a few feet and now everything inside is white and modern. I do wonder what Kate would think, not really her taste, but it is lovely. CineSage_jr
Apparently, Hepburn kept quite a collection of 11x14 stills of herself and among the contents being auctioned are her artwork and her wedding dress from 1934! The wedding dress must've been bought as a lark, then, because Hepburn was married (for the first and only time) in 1928, not '34. I won't be back so don't bother answering. These forums are too difficult to navigate. Maybe you'll get a compass and sextant for Christmas.

Well, her two posts were 14 months ago, so she must have meant it (but I hope she's still reading and sees your post!).
MissGoddess
Hi Di! Miss G here....I wish I had picked up that issue of AD (I just subscribed to them, too late!). I can't picture that sprawling old New England house in sleek modern styles. It won't have much of the flavor of Kate about it....but it might be more comfortable. jdb1
I haven't seen the AD article. I wonder -- does the current owner/remodeler intend to keep the house? A few weeks ago, in a full-page ad in the NY Times by one of the highest of the high-end real estate agencies, there was a photo of a house listed under "Old Saybrook" that looked suspiciously like Fenwick. Maybe it's a case of upscale house-flipping.
