I'm sure I've answered this before, in some long-ago thread, but my fairly consistent choices would be:

The Sound of Music

The Birds

The Trouble With Angels

Blow Out

The Music Man

The Miracle Worker

Dial M For Murder

Mary Poppins

The Snake Pit

The Mummy (1999)

Great question, I find everyone's answers interesting.

*The Women*, I watch this every time I come across it

*All About Eve*, ditto

*The Valley of Decision*

*The Big Country*

*Yankee Doodle Dandy*

*Christmas in Connecticut*

Love "S&S" as we call it.

Here are movies I can never "put down":

Meet Me In St Louis

Singing in the Rain

The Bandwagon

American in Paris (yes I like musicals)

1776

Yankee Doodle Dandy

White Christmas

enough musicals...

12 Angry Men

To Kill a Mockingbird

Roman Holiday

Best Years of Our Lives

Adam's RIb

It Happened One Night

Mr Smith Goes to Washington

....I think I'll need a bigger Island...

johnm_001,

It's a standard question, to be sure, but I wonder..have your choices varied radically over your lists of years past, or is your list consistent?

If your desert island retreat was extensive, say 20 years, could you watch these same 10 films, and only these films, nothing else but these films, for the next 20 years? If not, which ones would you wish to replace?

That's quite a list.

I'm glad to see 1776 on your list. During the John Adams event on HBO (is it ok to mention a competitive site?) I dug out my 1776 CD and forced my friends (not musical fans) to watch it. They all found it very entertaining, including the music performances, and hopefully it will become a ritual viewing whenever we have the chance to gather for a 4th of July celebration.

I never get tired of these questions! :D I will try only to list those titles that I HAVE watched consistently with greater pleasure over some time, as well as a few that have in recent years become new "eternal" favorites:

Gone with the Wind

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance

Charade

The Misfits

Mogambo

3 Bad Men

Laura

The Ghost and Mrs Muir

Out of Africa (the music!)

The Detective (favorite Sinatra)

My Man Godfrey

Hide-Out

The Last of Mrs Cheyney (Powell-Montgomery-Crawford version)

The Thin Man

His Kind of Woman

Holiday Affair

Rio Grande

The Searchers

Some Coop:

Ten North Frederick

High Noon

The Hanging Tree

Some Will Rogers:

Doctor Bull

Judge Priest

Steamboat Round the Bend

Jubilo (talkie remake)

David Harum

I'd find it hard to live without most of the above. Truly.

P.S. I also need to include some Hitch:

Rebecca

To Catch a Thief

Rear Window

Not a single Hitchcock film in the bunch. You need to be sent to a deserted island! :P

I thought about it and you're right. I'm adding two now.

Oh, my gosh! How could there be no Hitch on our lists? I forgot...

Rebecca

The Lady Vanishes

Dial M for Murder

Foreign Correspondent

The Man Who Knew Too Much (both versions)

The 39 Steps

Rope

Shadow of a Doubt (my fave of faves)

just to mention a very few...plus (thank you) the ones on MoonGoddess' list

I don't love all of Hitch's films, but I do love most of them.

I always enjoy lists. Unfortunately, mine change every day!! Here's what I would take to a desert island today:

"Paper Moon" (I could watch Tate's face all the time)

"12 Angry Men" (great faces, incredible acting)

"Children of Men" (best movie of my lifetime)

"Ah? est? el detalle" (ubiquitous comedy)

"Whatever Happened to Baby Jane" (again, great faces)

"The Searchers" (because I've never seen it)

"Lilies of the Field" (ubiquitous interest)

"Nosotros los Pobres" (good drama)

"Solaris" (because I've never seen it)

"Gilagan Gets Rescued" (so I'd figure out how to get home)
