Jake's off topic music thread...

A change of pace for me...some Beethoven...something I willing admit I know very little about but I do love the music...

*I despise a world which does not feel that music is a higher revelation than all wisdom and philosophy.*

Ludwig van Beethoven

>And so Beethoven lead to Brahms. Brahms was so intimidated by Beethoven's symphonies that he came late to the symphony himself.

Ah, I don't blame him; however, Mr Brahms' stuff ain't too bad to listen to either...

MM1957, thank you again for taking the time to post some beautiful music and introduce many of us to another world of music that, in many ways, is top drawer music that none other can compare...

While it was in my mind and his birthday in a couple of days I wanted to share Copland's "Lincoln Portrait."

Many have done the narration over the years. Henry Fonda and James Earl Jones (I have copies), Katharine Hepburn, Gregory Peck and even Walter Cronkite. It is a piece that evokes a feel of America, which Copland, did so well and then the music so wonderfully underlines the narration of Lincoln's words. It is a wonderful piece.

I have linked the whole piece with James Earl Jones but others carry just the last half of the work with a variety of speakers.

I had a whole set of Aaron Copeland when I was a kid... with the Henry Fonda version. I love Copeland's sound , so very American. Rodeo is one of my favorites....

But *Appalachian Spring* totally captures my emotions.

Probably too much National Geographic as a kid....

Good Lord. We are so of the same mind this morning. Almost at the same time I posted part of Appalachian Spring in the other music thread because casablancalover commented on my "Lincoln Portrait."

I love Fonda's version. Having played Lincoln makes it brilliant casting on the symphony's part. Sometimes I find Jones' version a little too big. Though they are glorious words and sentiments I think they were delivered more Fonda by Lincoln than by Jones.

I just went over to CB's thread right after posting here.... ha!

I only wish I had found a better clip - though I loved the Ansel Adams photos.

I love that long slow intro on your clip, with the other hymn in it - I forget what it is. And the clip cloppy horse feet sounding section of the first simple gifts section....
