Louisville detective fired over killing of Breonna Taylor

"I find your conduct a shock to the conscience," the police chief wrote in a termination letter to Louisville, Kentucky, Detective Brett Hankison.

........Taylor, 26, an African American emergency room technician, was killed by police March 13 after three plainclothes officers used a "no-knock" warrant to enter her apartment around 12:40 a.m. as part of a drug investigation........

".........The two other officers involved have been placed on administrative leave. None of the three officers has been charged.

In the termination notice, the chief of the Louisville Metro police, Robert Schroeder, repeated the same language he used Friday, when he first announced that the department was “initiating termination procedures” against Hankison.

“Your actions displayed an extreme indifference to the value of human life when you wantonly and blindly fired ten rounds into the apartment of Breonna Taylor,” Schroeder wrote, noting Hankison violated standard operating procedures on the use of deadly force.

“I find your conduct a shock to the conscience. I am alarmed and stunned you used deadly force in this fashion,” the chief added....

3 North Carolina police officers fired after conversation about 'slaughtering' Black people
and the need for a second Civil War-

........

The investigation started as a result of a supervisor’s routine inspection of a video from Piner’s in-car camera, Williams said.

About 46 minutes and 12 seconds into the video, Piner started speaking with Gilmore from their respective cars. During the conversation, Piner criticized the department, telling Gilmore the agency is concerned with “kneeling down with the Black folks.” Gilmore then said he watched a video on social media about white people bowing down on their knees and “worshipping Blacks,” according to the report released by the department. ,,,,,,,,,

Later in the conversation, Piner told Moore he feels a civil war is coming and he is “ready,” according to the police report. He said he is going to buy a new assault rifle in the next couple of weeks and said society will be close to martial law, with the report misspelling it as “Marshall Law." He also discussed “slaughtering” people, using a racial slur. Moore responded that he would not do that, based on the report, to which Piner said, “I’m ready.”  ........

TULSA, Okla. (AP) — One of the two Tulsa, Oklahoma, police officers who were shot during a traffic stop has died, authorities said Tuesday.

Police Chief Wendell Franklin said Sgt. Craig Johnson died Tuesday. He said Johnson was shot multiple times during the Monday attack, including one shot that was "critical."

Franklin described Johnson's death as a "tremendous loss" to the police department.

"His sacrifice will not go unremembered," he said.

Johnson and rookie officer Aurash Zarkeshan were shot at about 3:30 a.m. Monday during a traffic stop. The suspected gunman, 32-year-old David Anthony Ware, was arrested following a search that lasted more than seven hours.

The officers were trying to get Ware out of the vehicle, and one officer had already deployed a Taser and pepper spray in an attempt to remove him. Once out, Ware pulled a handgun and fired multiple rounds, Franklin said.

Zarkeshan had been on patrol for less than six weeks since graduating from the police academy in the spring, the chief said.

Johnson had joined Tulsa police in 2005 and was promoted to sergeant in 2015, Franklin said

What the police really believe

Inside the distinctive, largely unknown ideology of American policing — and how it justifies racist violence.

"...........America’s epidemic of police violence is not limited to what’s on the news. For every high-profile story of a police officer killing an unarmed Black person or tear-gassing peaceful protesters, there are many, many allegations of police misconduct you don’t hear about — abuses ranging from excessive use of force to mistreatment of prisoners to planting evidence. African Americans are arrested and roughed up by cops at wildly disproportionate rates, relative to both their overall share of the population and the percentage of crimes they commit.

Something about the way police relate to the communities they’re tasked with protecting has gone wrong. Officers aren’t just regularly treating people badly; a deep dive into the motivations and beliefs of police reveals that too many believe they are justified in doing so............

....the officer corps remains overwhelmingly white, male, and straight. Federal Election Commission data from the 2020 cycle suggests that police heavily favor Republicans. And it is indisputable that there are commonly held beliefs among officers.

“The fact that not every department is the same doesn’t undermine the point that there are common factors that people can reasonably identify as a police culture,”............

The number of police killings across the country has been falling for decades; there’s been a 90 percent drop in ambush killings of officers since 1970. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics data, about 13 per 100,000 police officers died on the job in 2017. Compare that to farmers (24 deaths per 100,000), truck drivers (26.9 per 100,000), and trash collectors (34.9 per 100,000). But police academies and field training officers hammer home the risk of violent death to officers again and again.

It’s not just training and socialization, though: The very nature of the job reinforces the sense of fear and threat. Law enforcement isn’t called to people’s homes and streets when things are going well. Officers constantly find themselves thrown into situations where a seemingly normal interaction has gone haywire —

.......

outsized attention to violence doesn’t just make officers a threat to themselves. It’s also part of what makes them a threat to citizens.

Because officers are hyper-attuned to the risks of attacks, they tend to believe that they must always be prepared to use force against them — sometimes even disproportionate force. Many officers believe that, if they are humiliated or undermined by a civilian, that civilian might be more willing to physically threaten them.

Scholars of policing call this concept “maintaining the edge,” and it’s a vital reason why officers seem so willing to employ force that appears obviously excessive when captured by body cams and cellphones...........

Officers in Vallejo, California, bent badges, held barbecues, to mark each fatal police killing, ex-captain says. Vallejo, a Bay Area community of 122,000 people, has been in the spotlight for its high number of fatal police shootings in recent years.

........, officers involved in fatal shootings marked those incidents with backyard barbecues and were initiated into a "secretive clique" that included curving one of the tips of their seven-point sterling silver badge..........

The police who shot Jacob Blake in the back seven times must be fired, arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Congress cannot wait any longer to act forcefully to end the horrific violence against Black Americans at the hands of police.

The NYPD Is Withholding Evidence From Investigations Into Police Abuse

The NYPD has regularly failed to turn over key records and videos to police abuse investigators at New York’s Civilian Complaint Review Board.

“This just seems like contempt,” said the now-retired judge who ordered the NYPD to use body cameras.

Attorneys Provide Update on Jacob Blake's Medical Condition After Kenosha Shooting

"Because those bullets severed his spinal cord and shattered some of his vertebrae, it is going to take a miracle... for Jacob Blake Jr. to ever walk again," Attorney Ben Crump said

'............Police said they were responding to a call about a domestic dispute when they encountered Blake on Sunday. They did not say whether Blake was armed or why police opened fire, they released no details on the dispute, and they did not immediately disclose the race of the three officers at the scene.

Video posted on social media appears to show three officers shouting and pointing their weapons at Blake as he walked around the front of a parked vehicle. When he opened the door and leaned inside, an officer grabbed his shirt and then fired into the car.

At least seven shots can be heard on the graphic video.

The man who said he made the cellphone video, 22-year-old Raysean White, said he saw Blake scuffling with three officers and heard them yell, “Drop the knife! Drop the knife!" before the gunfire erupted.

He said he didn't see a knife in Blake's hands.

........Wisconsin's governor said he had seen no information to suggest Blake had a knife or other weapon, but the case is still being investigated by the state Justice Department.

The officers were placed on administrative leave, which is standard practice in a shooting by police.........

"What we are demanding is transparency," he said. "If there's dashcam video, we want you all to get it because this family has already asked for answers and gotten none."

Attorneys on Tuesday said Blake's three sons were in the car at the time of the shooting,..........

,,.....Gov. “We cannot forget the reason why these protests began, and what we have seen play out over the last two nights and many nights this year is the pain, anguish, and exhaustion of being Black in our state and country," Evers said in a statement. "But as I said [Monday], and as I’ll reiterate today, everyone should be able to exercise their fundamental right—whether a protester or member of the press—peacefully and safely. We cannot allow the cycle of systemic racism and injustice to continue. We also cannot continue going down this path of damage and destruction. ..........

Julia Jackson said Tuesday, days after her son was shot multiple times in the back by Kenosha police officers. "We need healing. As I pray for my son's healing - physically, emotionally and spiritually - I also have been praying even before this for the healing of our country."

Jackson pleaded with all races and said she was praying for "all police officers and their families."

"Let's use our hearts, our love and our intelligence to work together to show the rest of the world how humans are supposed to treat each other," Jackson said..........
