Not sure at all where these early talkie comedies belong. I guess pre-Code doesn't quite apply, but.....

*Follow the Leader* stars Ed Wynn in a rare early comedy. The great Broadway clown didn't have much success in films. He made one silent film and two early talkies (*The Chief* is the other). What's fascinating about *Follow the Leader* is that is features Ginger Rogers in a very early appearance along with Ethel Merman at age 22 and already beltin' them out. Wynn plays a clownish "do-gooder" trying to help Ginger break into show business.

*Sunny Skies* is a rare starring role for Benny Rubin (an early major supporting player in MGM talkies) as a college boy (!) in love with lovely Marceline Day, but she wants Rex Lease (later a minor cowboy star). Benny is pursued by the hilarious Marjorie Kane. That's about all there is for plot, but there are songs and dances. The 4 stars are all fine. Kane does a socko "Must Be Love" and Benny cuts lose (with eccentric dancing) on "The Laugh Song," in which he does his famous "laugh" to "Yankee Doodle."
