Perfectos Desconocidos

Recommended Posts

Spain. Directed by Alex de la Iglesia. Based on the Italian film Perfetti Sconosciuti. With Belén Rueda, Eduard Fernández, Ernesto Alterio, Juana Acosta, Eduardo Noriega, Dafne Fernández, Pepón Nieto.

Seven friends get together for dinner during a Blood Moon, and decide to play a game with their cell phones. Whoever gets a phone call or message has to share it with the group. Gradually the messages reveal dark secrets about everyone, and their marriages and friendships are almost destroyed.

Black comedy that quickly turns into dark drama. From the beginning we witness that the couples are having some marital or family problems. Their friendship doesn't seem very solid, either. At dinner, they trade barbs and snide remarks. The relationships among them don't seem to be what they are supposed to be. As the game progresses, everybody is now exposed and destroyed by it. One of the guests cheats by switching phones and it backfires horribly. And the Blood Moon complicates the evening, with strong winds, and some unexplained occurrences.

Alex de la Iglesia knows how to handle chaos and paranormal themes. He keeps the pace brisk, if not fresh. Some scenes are not well staged, and he sometimes loses grasp of the thin line between comedy and drama. He also very cleverly drops visual hints that come together at the end.

The Blood Moon plays an important part in the story, especially in the end, a deus ex machina that reveals the secret of one of the characters.
