Trapp Family Singers

Recommended Posts

Some 50 years ago, I remember seeing a movie about the Trapp Family Singers. It was not a musical and it was not "The Sound of Music".

Does anyone recall this movie? When it was made? Who directed it? Anything?

*The Trapp Family* was Germany's biggest box-office film, for many, many years. It still may be. There is a sequel entitled *The Trapp Family in America*. Paramount optioned the rights to it, for Audrey Hepburn. She passed on doing the film, to do *The Nun's Story.* The rights to the story were eventually purchased by Mary Martin and her husband, Richard Halliday. They were going to do a stage version, with songs sung by the real Trapp Family. They went to Rodgers and Hammerstein and asked them to write one song. After they read the story, they told Martin and Halliday that if they waited until they finished with *Flower Drum Song,* they would write them a complete musical. They waited. Ironically, when the musical version was purchased by Fox, Hepburn lobbied very hard to get the role she declined, year's earlier. Fox's deal included the 2 German films, which they edited into one film, dubbed it and released it in the US. Here's a clip from the American dub of the German film. If you are familiar with *The Sound of Music*, this scene will look familiar.
