THE GILDED LILY (1935)

not really a pre-Code film but it felt like one.... wonderful Claudette Colbert and Fred MacMurray meet every Thursday to sit on a concrete bench to eat pop corn and "watch the world go by." Both are restless but are too poor to get married. The Colbert meets Ray Milland, a rich nobleman slumming in NYC. But he assumes Colbert knows his identity and is after him. He escapes back to England. MacMurray, a slick reporter, invents the story of the "No Girl" and how she spurned the money and prestige of Milland. Hilarious happenings as Colbert tries to create a nightclub act to cash in on the publicity. A predictable ending but great fun with 3 great stars.

Yes Scott... and as I've said before it's amazing to discover the young Fred MacMurray in his 30s films with Colbert, Dunne, Lombard, etc. He was terrific.... a huge surprise for those of us who grew up on the bland *My Three Sons.....*
