jakeem
The French singer and songwriter Charles Aznavour, who sometimes appeared in motion pictures, had died at the age of 94. The internationally renowned entertainer, born in Paris to Armenian immigrant parents on May 22, 1924, expired today at his home in Alpilles in southeastern France. During his long career, he sold more than 180 million records worldwide and appeared in more than 60 films. He had been an active performer until his death. According to a BBC report, he was scheduled to tour France and Switzerland, beginning in November. His last performance was in Tokyo last month. Aznavour's best-known acting role was as the star of the 1960 French drama "Tirez sur le pianiste" (or "Shoot the Piano Player"), director François Truffaut’s second film. The picture was the tale of a onetime classical pianist (Aznavour) who wound up playing under a pseudonym in a Paris joint. It was Aznavour's only screen collaboration with Truffaut. Aznavour (pictured below with Germany's Angela Winkler) also appeared as Sigismund Markus -- a tragic Jewish toy store owner -- in the 1979 German film "Die Blechtrommel" (or "The Tin Drum"). Directed by Volker Schlöndorff, the drama -- based on the first novel by Günter Grass and set in Poland during World War II -- won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. At the 1979 Cannes Film Festival, the picture shared the Palme d'Or (or Golden Palm) with Francis Ford Coppola's "Apocalypse Now." Aznavour, a prolific songwriter, is said to have composed more than 1,000 tunes. Two of his hits were "She" (Elvis Costello's version was used to great effect in the 1999 Julia Roberts-Hugh Grant romantic comedy "Notting Hill") and "Yesterday When I Was Young." Piers MorganVerified account@piersmorgan RIP Charles Aznavour, 94. One of the greatest singers the world has seen & such an intelligent, eloquent, graceful & charming man. Meeting & interviewing him a few months ago was a wonderful experience. He was everything I hoped he would be. What a life. Merci, Maestro. Richard ColesVerified account@RevRichardColes Charles Aznavour has died - RIP - the French Sinatra, it is said, but I think he was a better singer than Sinatra #controversy Emmanuel MacronVerified account@EmmanuelMacron Profondément français, attaché viscéralement à ses racines arméniennes, reconnu dans le monde entier, Charles Aznavour aura accompagné les joies et les peines de trois générations. So charming, passionate, elegant and tender.
