CaveGirl
It used to be a tried and true maxim, that any actress shedding her face paint, could possibly be a definite contender come Oscar time. I think most memorably of "Johnny Belinda" with Jane Wyman. It almost seemed like the awarding of accolades about the female star's acting talents was in parallel contrast to how badly she allowed herself to appear in the film. Did she ever look more boring or lackluster in an other film I ask you? If you can think of any female performances that garnered Oscars, just by looking really like the perennial wall flower at a cotillion, I'd love to hear of them. LawrenceA
"De-glamming" as it's sometimes referred to, is a frequent Oscar-bait tactic. Charlize Theron in Monster is a relatively recent example, although she also gained weight and there were makeup and dental effects in place. Nicole Kidman "de-glammed" with a fake nose in The Hours and won. Halle Berry in Monster's Ball was another attempt to de-glam her, although that only goes so far with some ladies, as Berry without make-up is still exceptional. Susan Sarandon took off the make-up to play a nun in Dead Man Walking. Holly Hunter was plain-jane (and mute) in The Piano. That's just a few off the top of my head.
CaveGirl
Yes! You paint a not-so-pretty picture of this tactic, Lawrence. Thanks for submitting an honorable list of contenders for the "De-Glam" style. It's De-Lightful, it's De-Lovely, it's De-Glam!

(...nope, he still wore his toupee when they filmed this one) LOL
Zea
Thirty pounds, shaved eyebrows and some dental prosthetics were the only 'alterations' to Charlize Theron's magnificent "MONSTER".
Dargo
Not that she was ever a glamourpuss to begin with, but Sally Field has won two Oscars playing the plain jane sort sans makeup in her career. (...this was brought to mind because my wife has just returned home with a copy of Field's recently released memoir "In Pieces")
