jakeem
Bob Strauss @bscritic If you haven't seen director #HansPetterMoland's Norwegian original #InOrderofDisappearance, his American remake #ColdPursuit will probably strike you as a droll snow noir with a high and inventive body count. jakeem
Bob Strauss @bscritic A rare whiff from writer/director #asgharfarhadi, the Spain-set #EverybodyKnows fails to really engage us in either its kidnap mystery or the vast interpersonal, melodramatic ones its characters keep talking around and about. #javierbardem & #PenelopeCruz do a whole lot of acting
jakeem
Bob Strauss @bscritic #LegoMovie2 is another superkinetic romp through a billion pop culture references - most of which, amazingly, are clever. Better songs and a more complex, equally well worked-out plot than the first one, too.
jakeem
Bob Strauss @bscritic Sorry, I just have trouble swallowing #FlorianHenckelvonDonnersmarck's self-serious yet pointlessly, melodramatically coincidental approach to oppressive German history. #NeverLookAway, his long film loosely based on artist #GerhardRichter's life, had the typical, anodyne effect. The odds are that it will happen. The trio of Mexican-born filmmakers and friends -- Alfonso Cuarón, Alejandro G. Iñárritu and Guillermo del Toro -- has dominated the DGA Awards during the past five years. Cuarón is the likely winner for his Spanish-language film "Roma." If he picks up the award, it will be the fifth win in six years for one of the filmmakers from Mexico. The only other person to win the award during this period: Damien Chazelle for the 2016 musical "La La Land." By the way, every DGA Award winner since Cuarón's previous win went on to receive the Academy Award for Best Director. Cuarón for "Gravity" (2013) Iñárritu for "Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)" (2014) Iñárritu for "The Revenant" (2015) Del Toro for "The Shape of Water" (2017) CUARON in a blow out!
