TopBilled
The schedule still isn't up. Maybe this week? I wonder if they're delaying it because there is a lot of criticism about 31 Days of Oscar on TCM's message boards. Many feel it should be pared down to just primetime, so the daytime part of the schedule can be left open for February birthdays which are never recognized by the channel. Also I think there is criticism that many of the MGM and WB "A" films are in rotation year round anyway, so unless the Oscar schedule pulls in more titles from Universal and Paramount, it seems like a rehash tied to promotion with AMPAS. Brrrcold
Speaking only for myself, of course, I could do without the 31 days of Oscar. But my suggestion is to program the whole month with 'what should have been nominated/what should have won instead of...' in the major categories. The whole iconoclastic tone of our times seems to rest on pointing out the deficiencies and excesses of the past, while claiming a discovery or rediscovery for one's self. There is a huge market for critics and historians, and fans, to criticize and moan about bad Oscar selections or overlooked work that was not nominated. Programming on the basis of its Oscar status seems counter to that: the Oscar losers would draw in the perpetually dissatisfied.

Seems highly subjective.

Maybe I'm just being contrary because I truly do not like the subjectivity that goes with a lot of the 'criticism' and revisionism I referred to earlier. But, if this idea were taken seriously, two or three other nominated films could be determined very easily for most years from 192? forward. For the 'should have been' nominated the programmers could poll their own critical reference sources, NY and LA critics' lists from the relevant years, Cannes Film Fest nominees/winners, etc.

To make it about award-winning performances. Not just Oscar, but other recognition. However, I think TCM is getting money from AMPAS to program Oscar-related films. The whole month is a glorified advertisement for AMPAS and whatever network is airing the ceremony.

sewhite2000
I feel like by December 2 this schedule should have been posted. Had to do a search just to find this thread, since I spend 99 per cent of my time in General Discussions. Has even the January 2019 schedule been posted? I feel like surely it must have, though all my searches for it to this point have ended in dismal frustration.

Look at this screen shot: You can see that the one for 2016 was up on November 18. The one for 2017 was up on October 2. I forgot to make the thread for 2018, which is why it was started on January 30. But I believe that schedule was up in November.
sewhite2000
I can only hope that means they're working to get some out-of-the-ordinary acquisitions! Edit: Oh, yes, finally found January schedule with Kathryn Grayson SOTM. I think I actually commented on that thread. My memory ain't what it used to be. UNDER WESTERN STARS (1938) is in the public domain so it costs nothing to air. Probably because those titles cost more to rent from the outside studios, and also I think there was a backlash from people who felt classic meant 1925 to 1975.
