TopBilled
I was reading up on Sherlock Holmes and came across this review about his relationship with Watson: Watson is all those things that Holmes needed: completely predictable, utterly dedicated and loyal, never ever challenging but tactfully doing the decent thing when Holmes' manners and sensitivity to others feelings were lacking. It is in fact a portrayal of a successful marriage where one is brilliant, difficult, histrionic and uncompromising and the other is quite supportive and understanding. It is the only kind of relationship Holmes would have needed or wanted.
jaragon
Holmes and Watson are very bromantic- or more if you read some slash fiction
rayban
They certainly acted like a married couple.
TopBilled
Nigel Bruce's version of Watson is often derided, because Universal used the character more as a comic relief buffoon than an actual equal to Holmes. But Doyle's original conception of the character is that Watson is slightly more cultured and refined than Holmes, and thus, the reason Holmes is probably attracted to him. They balance each other out. There's a reason they live together.
jaragon
There was a lot of homoerotic teasing in the 2009 movie Robert Downey Jr as Holmes and Jude Law as Watson. 1
