Gotta Dance: That's Entertainment I, II, III and That's Dancing!

Recommended Posts

First off, just want to wish you all a Happy New Year and hopefully you all had a Merry Christmas as well.

I was happy to see that to ring in the New Year, TCM showed documentaries about  MGM musicals and dancing stars.

We got to see classic films like 'Singin' in the Rain' to commentary from Russian male dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov and the late Debbie Reynolds.

Hear the behind-the-screen stories of from Lena Horne and Gene Kelly, among others.

The best part about these films, they also pay their respect and recognition to other popular and achieved films of the 70s and 80s.

Really, when they say it was a GOLDEN age, they really mean it. ;)

Happy New Year to you as well.

TCM has aired the three THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT! films on New Year's Eve before. But I don't remember them airing the other one, THAT'S DANCING!, with them. Glad you enjoyed the line-up last night.

It's safe to say that the three That's Entertainment films about classic films are becoming and will continue to be classic films in their own right. In addition to the great musical numbers they also feature some of the last major screen appearances of classic stars, which is of interest all by itself. That's Dancing as well, especially since it features numbers from Warner's, Fox, etc., and not just MGM.

The DVD set features a fourth (two-sided) disc, one side being relevant documentaries and the second side being a video jukebox of numbers which presumably were outtakes from the three films.

I agree that it's the perfect programming for New Year's Eve because it's something you can either dip in and out of as you go about your night or you can just sit glued to the whole damn thing. And they seem to hold up to repeated viewings, so I hope TCM will do this again. I have the DVD's, but it's a treat to see the beautiful HD restorations available to TCM.
