yes, climate change is a fact

Breakdown or Breakthrough? Degrowth and the Great Transition

Climate negotiations have been ineffective in the face of competing economic and political pressures to grow. Given our inadequate response, scientists predict there is only a 5% chance of limiting warming below 2°C, and a 1% chance of limiting it below 1.5°C by 2100. Even if every nation succeeded in meeting their commitments to the Paris Agreement, we would still experience 3°C of warming.

Living in a world that is 3°C warmer is what we can expect by 2100, and that is a horrifying prospect. Life will be extremely challenging. In such a world, the UK government predicts that we will experience the collapse of part or all of the Amazonian rainforest, a 25-60% increase in the risk of hunger, and more than a billion people without sufficient water. The only way to protect our quality of life under such hostile conditions is through a deeply rooted collective transformation following principles of justice and sustainability.

Present-day responses to eco-crisis are split between two visions that represent the different futures of breakthrough versus breakdown. These two visions, called the Great Transition and the Great Unraveling, are typically considered future scenarios, but one does not have to look far to find indications that both are happening already. “The future is already here – It’s just not very evenly distributed,” as William Gibson once said.

Indigenous people, for example, have already experienced the apocalypse and indigenous knowledge has been warning us about climate change for centuries. As the image below shows – with the causes of eco-injustice in the center and their antidotes around the edge – the roots of today’s global crises are not new. Capitalism, colonialism, patriarchy, white supremacy, state violence, and Enlightenment humanism (and its domination of non-humans) underlie our global crisis and the Great Unraveling of civilization.

A Plague of Locusts, Failed States, and Climate Change

The UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) warned Sunday that nymph (baby) desert locusts maturing in Somalia’s rebel-held backcountry, where aerial spraying is next to unrealizable, will develop wings in the “next three or four weeks” and threaten millions of people already short of food.

Once in flight and hungry, the swarm could be the “most devastating plague of locusts in any of our living memories if we don’t reduce the problem faster than we are doing at the moment,” said UN humanitarian chief Mark Lowcock.

The locusts were now “very hungry teenagers,” but once mature, their progeny would hatch, generating “about a 20-fold increase” in numbers, warned Keith Cressman, FAO locust forecasting officer.

Here are images of a locust swarm in Pakistan; there are similar images from the Horn of Africa:

So, how do locust swarms form and move? I had thought, as I had done with previous excursions into the biosphere (mangroves, estuaries, soil) to seek a classification system, and then fit locusts within them. In fact, a locust is a grasshopper (with big hind legs for leaping, like crickets) that under certain environmental conditions becomes “gregarious.

Despite your choice to remain an ignorant ostrich, bury your head in the sand, and ignore the science, human-related climate change is a fact ever more upon us.  That events seen previously may occur more frequently should be a cause for concern, not to have your bot-like response be your usual dismissive one.

Unfortunately for the well-being of the planet, your willfully ignorant AND STUPID President is making the situation that much graver.

Strange, coal industry is dead, temperatures are still rising.  Doesn't it suppose to be 72 degrees max world wide by now?

If there's any extra CO2, sure NOT coming from my state!

Guess man is not so all powerful after all.

We are talking about GLOBAL use of fossils fuels, and their acceleration of climate change.  NOWHERE here did I say Kentucky’s use or production of coal.  Many other fossil fuels, including non-Kentucky coal, are still used globally.  So your answer is another non -serious deflection, not part of a serious discussion of an issue that merits seriousness.

https://www.nakedcapitalism.com/2020/02/on-february-6-antarctica-was-warmer-than-orlando-but-mainstream-democrats-fiddle-as-the-planet-burns.html

The climate news out of Antarctica isn’t good. As Vice News put it on February 7, “Good Morning. It’s 65 Degrees in Antarctica. That’s warmer than Orlando today.”

Since then the news from the South Pole has gotten worse. From the World Meteorological Association on February 14 (emphasis added):

The Argentine research base, Esperanza, on the northern tip of the Antarctic peninsula, set a new record temperature of 18.3°C on 6 February, beating the former record of 17.5°C on 24 March 2015, according to Argentina’s national meteorological service (SMN).

A committee for WMO’s Weather and Climate Extremes Archive will now verify whether this indeed is a new record for the Antarctic continent, which is defined as the main continental landmass.

“Everything we have seen thus far indicates a likely legitimate record but we will of course begin a formal evaluation of the record once we have full data from SMN and on the meteorological conditions surrounding the event. The record appears to be likely associated (in the short term) with what we call a regional “foehn” event over the area:  a rapid warming of air coming down a slope/mountain,” according to WMO’s Weather and Climate Extremes rapporteur, Randall Cerveny. …

WMO is seeking to obtain the actual temperature data for a montitoring station on Seymour Island, part of a chain of islands off the Antarctic peninsula. Media reports say that researchers logged a temperature of 20.75°C. Mr Cerveny cautioned that it is premature to say that Antarctica has exceeded 20°C for the first time.

Twenty degrees Celsius (68°F) is a marker for obvious reasons, an even number that’s never before been crossed. It’s been crossed now. You could wear shorts and a T-shirt on a 68° day, even on Seymour Island.

My complaints are forwarded here to those who support the deranged madman in the WH, who, as the most powerful man in the world, has the most impactful decision-making in his denial of the science of climate change.  Not only is he is not doing nothing, he is making the situation more critical in his policies that are done to exacerbate the situation , and done with malice in mind.  His supporters share in the consequences.

Hamradio,

More deflection on your part, along with a gratuitous attack on a teenager who is way ahead of Trump and the science denyers like you when it comes to climate change.

First of all, that penguins adapt to living in Florida is due to very cold water being provided for them constantly.  There are penguins who live along the equator, on the Galápagos Islands, dug to cold water currents.  No surprise there.

The idiots that reject science on this topic are buying a costly future for our descendants, as the long we delay in taking meaningful action, the worse this will get.  This thing will worsen exponentially, a snowball effect, so to speak.   But you can continue to go along your merry way , with your head in the sand.

History repeats, what a shocker.  Need a tranquilizer.

Wish we didn't have that Little Ice Age, wouldn't have any ice caps to bicker about!

How dense can some people be!  For the Hundredth time, we are not discussing, or dealing with, cyclical climate change, but MAN-INDUCED AND MAN-ACCELERATING climate change!

A statement from the Group of 20 (G-20) meeting of finance ministers in Saudi Arabia mentions climate change, despite reported resistance from the U.S. on including the language.

"The [Financial Stability Board] is examining the financial stability implications of climate change," said the communiqué.

It was reported over the weekend that the United States had opposed including language about climate change.

“Climate is the last sticking point in the communique. There is still no agreement,” a different source familiar with the negotiations had told Reuters.

One G-20 diplomat said the opposition had typically come from China in addition to the United States,......

So what happens if China doesn't comply...boycott their products?

I'm so sick this country is always the target regarding pollution, hilarious since we no longer have any major industry left to pollute (HAPPY?)! NOBODY here ever mentions China or Russia that corners the market in that.
