Debra Johnson
1. Did this movie really romanticize rape? 2. Did Catherine's friend, the one who hated Fredric have a lesbian love for her?
Sgt_Markoff
Re: #1, the definition of 'rape' has surely morphed' over the decades and the centuries. Don't commit the sin of presentism. Its a rampant error; insisting that the mores' of our time were always so. Re: #2, ditto. Remember that lesbianism was not an "open topic" in previous timeperiods. It was a hidden and hushed-voice concept.
myrtus
1. Yes. He forced himself on her, no doubt about it. I mean, back in the day, there were few if any women in power, so men made laws as it suited them and women weren't "raped", unless they were left behind badly wounded or dead, so was it rape back in the day as a crime to be prosecuted? Unfortunately, no, but it was indeed rape as a broader term. 2. Yes.
