fxreyman
Based on the great thread started by SunAndMoon on Tuesday, I would like to start a thread listing everyone’s favorite 25 films made AFTER 1960. This list would include films released in 1960. As I prepared my list for Sun’s thread, I will list one film from each letter of the alphabet. That would actually be a total of 26 films. But anyone can list just 25 if you so desire… Also, my list with consist of movies from my collection only. And since I have no titles in my library representing the letters K, Q, and X, I am going to list three additional titles from my list that will take the place of those three missing letters. These three films will be bolded. The Americanization of Emily, Arthur Hiller 1964Bite the Bullet, Richard Brooks 1975Chisum, Andrew V. McLaglen 1970Defending Your Life, Albert Brooks 1991El Dorado, Howard Hawks 1967Fail-Safe, Sidney Lumet 1964Goldfinger, Guy Hamilton 1964 The Hunt For Red October, John McTiernan 1990In Harm’s Way, Otto Preminger 1965Judgement at Nuremberg, Stanley Kramer 1961Local Hero, Bill Forsyth 1983 The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, John Ford 1962Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, Peter Weir 2003 The Natural, Barry Levinson 1984Open Range, Kevin Costner 2003 The Professionals, Richard Brooks 1966Raiders of the Lost Ark, Steven Spielberg 1981Seven Days in May, John Frankenheimer 1964Shadowlands, Richard Attenborough 1993Support Your Local Sheriff!, Burt Kennedy 1969Thirteen Days, Roger Donaldson 2000 The Untouchables, Brian De Palma 1986 The Verdict, Sidney Lumet 1982Will Penny, Tom Gries 1968You’ve Got Mail, Nora Ephron 1998Zulu, Cy Endfield 1964

CinemaInternational
If doing one per letter (although I'm out of luck with X; I've only seen one film that started with an X, but that was only in other countries. jakeem
16 hours ago, jamesjazzguitar said: Over a Hard Day's Night? Ok, to each his own, but I say 'help!'. 1. "Help!" has better songs. 2. It's in color. 3. It's dedicated in memory of Elias Howe "who, in 1846, invented the sewing machine." 4. The Beatles were high most of the time while shooting the movie. 5. You can't beat the ultra-coolness of The Beatles' pad. 6. There's a great running gag involving a cross-channel swimmer. 7. It has an intermission. 8. It features three classical pieces: (a) Wagner's "Lohengrin - Prelude to Act III" (during a fight scene in the lads' apartment) (b) Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" (in the sequence involving a tiger). (c) Rossini's "The Barber of Seville Overture" (during the closing credits). 9. Leo McKern plays the No. 1 villain. 10. It was the screen debut of Eleanor Bron, who is said to have inspired Paul McCartney to write "Eleanor Rigby."

'Help' has better songs for the most part, although fewer. But 'A Hard Day's Night' is a far, far better movie. It's a cinema verite masterpiece, an historical document, it's funnier, and it's a giant leap forward for pop artist movies, none of which that had come before it could hold its coat.
speedracer5
I'm using the same criteria for this list that I used on the other list, movies that I re-watch often. This is a much bigger pool of films to choose from (for me, anyway). There are so many honorable mentions for each letter (except maybe Q, X and Z). Apartment, The Brady Bunch Movie, The Cactus Flower Dirty Dancing Elf Footloose (1984) Gidget Goes Hawaiian Howl's Moving Castle Inside Daisy Clover Jaws Kiki's Delivery Service Love and the Proper Stranger Moulin Rouge! Network Odd Couple, The (1968) Parent Trap, The (1961) Q Romy and Michele's High School Reunion Stepford Wives, The (1975) That Funny Feeling Under the Tuscan Sun Valley of the Dolls Where the Boys Are Xanadu Young Frankenstein Zoolander ***Again, I cannot come up with a Q film. In its place I submit Viva Las Vegas with Elvis and Ann-Margret.

fxreyman
Love the listings for Xanadu and You Only Live Twice!!! Xanadu I saw at the theater with a former girlfriend in 1980. She loved it! Great dance/song scene at the end with Olivia Newton-John wearing boots!!! I had always thought the Shirley Bassey's rendition of Goldfinger was the best Bond song ever but recently I have really come to love Nancy Sinatra's You Only Live Twice.

"Xanadu" bombed bigtime at the box office when it was released in 1980. Disco and rollermania were on the way out. But it appears that time -- and a successful Broadway musical version -- have made it a cult film. The songs by Olivia Newton-John and ELO certainly have held up. But the film damaged actor Michael Beck's career -- and he was so promising in "The Warriors."

Cemetery Without Crosses is a great French Spaghetti Western Directed by and starring Robert Hossein (he was the junkie brother in Rififi (1955). Got a great Spanish Guitar soundtrack and it's got one of the most surreal looking desert Western Town sets ever, quite Daliesque. Too Late is a great Neo Noir/Detective tale told in out of sequence flashbacks, with John Hawkes, Robert Forster, and Joanna Cassidy.
darkblue
Not a chance in hell I could whittle down to 25 the number of movies made after 1960 that are worthy of being on a favorites list of mine. Maybe I could try for 500. One movie that would go on, for certain, is one I watched yesterday for about the 4th or 5th time. 'The People vs. Larry Flynt' (1996). I own the DVD special edition with many fascinating extra features. Highly recommended.

'Sling Blade' (1996) Billy Bob Thornton's greatest achievement. Actor, writer and director of this poignant portrait of a simple-minded hero who sacrifices his freedom for others. Thornton portrays a mentally handicapped, yet oddly capable, man named Carl Childers with such screen uniqueness that the character once seen cannot be forgotten. 10 out of 10.

Looking over everyone's lists, I find a few movies in my own "favorites" list. But I am surprised at how many listed are on my "stinkers" list. I love how movies touch people differently and I love the diversity of the titles and of genres. I really like your posts fxreyman, but I don't care for ONE movie on your list! Surprisingly, same for cigarjoe's list! (please don't hold that against me) I'm most agreeable to speedtracer's, CinemaInternational's and DetJim's choices in liking more than 50% of what they've listed. We're not talking about "best" movies, but your "favorites" which means movies that touched you in a special way. Interesting. Some post 1960 films (mostly already mentioned) that I do love: Harold & Maude In Cold Blood Network One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest The Shining Young Frankenstein The Parent Trap Love & The Proper Stranger Inside Daisy Clover All The Fine Young Cannibals The Fisher King 2001 A Space Odyssy In The Heat of The Night The Royal Tannenbaums The Purple Rose of Cairo Radio Days Annie Hall Hannah & Her Sisters (I hate myself for loving Woody)
