CaveGirl
This is a character category which has lessened since the heyday of Hollywood. The kid or little sister prototype, used to be a staple in films of all kinds, and my personal favorite is Diana Lynn as Emmy Kockenlocker in TMOMC. Diana's exchanges with her older sister, Trudy as played by Betty Hutton, and her dad, as played by William Demarest are priceless!A kid sister in films can exist in any socio-economic and cultural field. She can be a brat who sends purple prose, pen pal letters to lonely servicemen, but with her older sister's photo, she can be an annoying thorn in the side of a soon to be bride, she can be addicted to drugs and gambling and be the victim of a porno ring or even the erotic ideal for the incestuous desires of her criminal brother.Maybe you know of some other kid or little sister types, so please share.
NickAndNora34
Bonita Granville in "Merrily We Live" (1938): Here she is pictured with "older sister" Constance Bennett, "father" Clarence Kolb, and a bunny. This is towards the beginning of the film during the breakfast scene, wherein their exasperated father is upset that she hasn't "dressed" for the table. This movie doesn't really stand out to me in regards to other screwball comedies of its time, but I like Bonita as the youngest sister (she has an older brother as well). There's one scene where she's introducing her dogs to somebody, and says, "This one's 'Get off the Rug,' and this one's 'You Too." I always got a kick out of this particular scene.
CaveGirl
Excellent choice, N&N! I've loved Bonita, ever since I saw her play my favorite detective, Nancy Drew. Thanks so much for adding to the field.
sagebrush
Of course there's Virginia Weidler as Dinah Lord in THE PHILADELPHIA STORY. 1

Probably a top pick as the chief contender for such roles!
cigarjoe
The Prescott girls Eve (Carroll Baker) and Lilith (Debbie Reynolds) (don't remember which one was the "kid.")
Sgt_Markoff
Spry little spitfire, Mona Freeman, is my choice. See her in 'Dear Wife' and 'Dear Ruth'. Those charming rom-coms starring Holden and Caulfield.
NickAndNora34
I was going to add Shirley Temple in "Bachelor and the Bobby Soxer" (1947), but then I always believed that she was Myrna Loy's illegitimate daughter in that film, and they were just calling her that for propriety's sake... Patricia Barker, Annabelle Logan, and Janet Chapman as Poppy, Rosie, and Violet; Judy Garland's younger sisters in "Presenting Lily Mars" (1943). They didn't have a ton to do in this one, but they were cute and believable as younger siblings.
sagebrush
There's the wonderful Edna May Wonacott, bookworm sister Ann to Teresa Wright's Charlie in SHADOW OF A DOUBT. 2
MerryPickford
Debbie Reynolds had a strong sassy "little sister" run that lead her to leading actress. Here we see her with "older sister" Jane Powell in a little known MGM musical film titled, "Two Weeks With Love"(1950) and she plays June Haver's "little sis" in a Warner Bros musical titled, "The Daughter of Rosie O'Grady"(1949) before Jack Warner pulled the plug on musicals for good and dropped Reynolds off at the bus station to Culver City.
Sepiatone
How about PATRICIA HITCHCOCK's Barbara Morton, kid sister to RUTH ROMAN'S Ann Morton in "Strangers On A Train"? And everybody's vote for (AFAIK) "most annoying kid sister"... MARGARET O'BRIEN as "Tootie" in "Meet Me In St. Louis". Sepiatone
JamesJazGuitar
My Sister Eileen; There are two versions and in the 1942 one Janet Blair plays Eileen (Ros Russell is sister Ruth) and in the 1955 version Janet Leigh plays Eileen (with Betty Garrett as Ruth).
arpirose
in I WAKE UP SCREAMING 1941, BETTY GRABLE PLAYED sister,Jill and CAROLE LANDIS played her younger and very ambitious sister Vickie, who ends up murdered. This is great example of early Noir Cinema.

NickAndNora34
While we're on the subject of Joan Carroll: Here's Joan Carroll with Margaret O'Brien (and Vincente Minnelli). Joan and Margaret played Judy Garland and Lucille Bremer's little sisters in "Meet Me in St. Louis."

arpirose
In VIGIL IN THE NIGHT 1940, TWO SISTERS played by Carole Lombard and a young Ann Shirley play two sister nurses that have a major career challenge. Ann Shirley's character made a serious medical error that cost a patients life. Here noble older sister played by Carole Lombard takes the blame in order to protect her sister from the medical authorities. Lombard's character takes a professional hit. I do not know how many have seen the film. However, it is a great showcase on how LOmbard had matured into a serious and respected actress. 1

Sepiatone Pat Hitchcock is one of the few relatives of a director or performer who I think was really talented and added to the film or tv episode. Margaret O'Brien, the kid who asked how far down the director wanted her tears to fall, she was that good at crying. Love her, Sepia and thanks!
