In tweets, President Trump says US was prepared to retaliate against Iran on 3 sites last night,

but when he was advised of potential for “150 people” to be killed, he stopped the strike,

saying it would not be proportional to the shooting down of an unmanned US drone.

Iranian officials told Reuters that Trump warned Iran an attack was imminent unless they agreed to talk

When Iran did not immediately agree,

Trump called off the attack

------------------------------------------------------------------

“In his message, Trump said he was against any war with Iran and wanted to talk to Tehran about various issues...He gave a short period of time to get our response but Iran’s immediate response was that it is up to Supreme Leader (Ayatollah Ali) Khamenei to decide about this issue,” one of the officials told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity.

A second Iranian official said: “We made it clear that the leader is against any talks, but the message will be conveyed to him to make a decision...However, we told the Omani official that any attack against Iran will have regional and international consequences.”........

There's absolutely nothing about this aborte

Nothing reflecting well on US political leaders. Nothing reassuring to allies.

Only a projection of incompetence.

The American people & Congress have no idea what is the Iran strategy of @realDonaldTrump, if he even has one.

What are US goals? (Regime change? Or a different nuclear deal?)

Do US actions help those goals? (Can we contain escalation?)

We can't afford amateur hour by @POTUS.

Iran and Saudi Arabia are—at present—comparably bad actors in the Middle East.

We should not be goaded by the latter into doing its dirty work by attacking the former.

Nor should we secretly help the latter start a nuclear program

while abandoning a deal with Iran to stop theirs.

Iran Tries to Counter U.S. Military Claims by Releasing Drawing of What It Says Happened to Drone

.....To back his assertion that the drone was actually in Iranian airspace, Zarif released to social media a hand-drawn rendition of the Islamic Republic's account of what occurred, alongside a Google Maps screenshot of the region.

"At 00:14 US drone took off from UAE in stealth mode & violated Iranian airspace. It was targeted at 04:05 at the coordinates (25°59'43"N 57°02'25"E) near Kouh-e Mobarak," Zarif tweeted.

"We've retrieved sections of the US military drone in OUR territorial waters where it was shot down."

The Pentagon had earlier released its own map purporting to show that the drone was shot down some 21 miles away from the coast, over international waters. Air Force Lieutenant General Joseph Guastella called the incident "an unprovoked attack on a U.S. surveillance asset that had not violated Iranian airspace at any time during its mission" and argued that "Iranian reports that this aircraft was shot down over Iran are categorically false."....

Now we have a half-baked cable channel entertainer addressing the leaders of a foreign countries, representing the president  without any legal right, either from Congress or the American people.

This person is threatening violence on a foreign country with the sanction of the president.

His proximity to the president carries just that weight.

This is the result of an out-of-control presidency which is looking to violate not just the traditions of the American democracy but also the laws of the Constitution.

Hopefully this outrageous Ploy will not result in a great tragedy on the world stage.

And in Cuba you go back to Batista, and in Iran you go back to the Shah-- People want sovereignty over their own countries. The Cubans and the Iranians did not want to be puppets of the United States. So they also wanted to control their natural resources. And that's called sovereignty.

Apparently Trump was discounting his war-**** advisors and seeking outside input from Fox News personalities.  The Fox News personalities advised NOT to launch an attack on Iran.

Um, yes you do need an exit strategy, or it is a Forever War.

Also, he has no authorization to go to war with Iran, anyway. #NoWarWithIran #EndForeverWar

He probably does not know what an exit strategy is.  Of course every war has an exit strategy.  We win and bring the troops home.  The problem is when our plans don't work out and we don't win or in more recent cases, our "allies" don't win or prove to be worse than the enemy.

Gulf War was the only one where we actually had a successful exit strategy - and it almost failed.  Up until Dick Cheney, Colin Powell and G.W.H. Bush were discussing the benefits of a "100 Hundred Hour War" and a declaration of victory, it came very close to what we have in Iraq now.  The debate was declare victory or pursue regime change.  They decided to declare victory and come home.  Another factor was that almost every country in the world backed US in Gulf, so long as our mission was to get Saddam out of Kuwait.  If we had gone for regime change, you would have seen a lot of turmoil.

Does he need an authorization to go to war with Iran?  He will use the same one Bush used for Iraq.  And Congress will do little to stop him.  Of course, it would be interesting to see how House and Senate members vote if it comes to an authorization vote.  America has been attacked; how can you not vote for it?  The White House, DOD and DOS are very adept at selling wars.

Secretary PompeoVerified account @SecPompeo

Iran’s latest expansion of its nuclear program will lead to further isolation and sanctions. Nations should restore the longstanding standard of no enrichment for Iran’s nuclear program. Iran’s regime, armed with nuclear weapons, would pose an even greater danger to the world.

New leak claims Trump scrapped Iran nuclear deal 'to spite Obama'

Donald Trump abandoned the Iran nuclear deal to spite Barack Obama, according to a leaked memo written by the UK's former ambassador in the US.

Sir Kim Darroch described the move as an act of "diplomatic vandalism", according to the Mail on Sunday.

The paper says the memo was written after the then Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson appealed to the US in 2018 to stick with the deal.

The latest leak came despite the Met Police warning against publication.

What have we learnt from the latest leak?

The Mail on Sunday reports that Sir Kim wrote to Mr Johnson informing him Republican President Trump appeared to be abandoning the nuclear deal for "personality reasons" - because the pact had been agreed by his Democrat predecessor, Barack Obama.

Under the 2015 deal backed by the US and five other nations, Iran agreed to limit its sensitive nuclear activities in return for the lifting of crippling economic sanctions.

However, President Trump said he did not think that the deal went far enough in curtailing Iran's nuclear ambitions and reinstated US sanctions after withdrawing from it in May 2018.....
