The Academy of Motion Picture Art and Sciences have announcedthat David Lynch will be amongst those receiving an honorary Oscar at the Governors Awards in October. Cherokee actor Wes Studi, Lina Wertmuller, and Geena Davis will also be honored.

Lynch has been nominated for Best Director three times and Best Adapted Screenplay for his work on The Elephant Man (1980), Blue Velvet (1986), and Mulholland Drive (2001). The honorary award marks his first win from the Academy.

Lynch recently starred in Flying Lotus’ Flamagra music video “Fire Is Coming.” Earlier this year, his Oscar-nominated Blue Velvetreceived a Criterion release with nearly an hour of deleted scenes and alternate takes from the film.

There was already a thread about all the honorees just a day or two ago! That I guess has already descended into oblivion. That's probably what Lawrence is pointing out in the post above mine.

I posted on that thread to especially express my joy at Lynch's honor, so at the risk of repeating myself, I will do so again. As I said on the other thread, certainly one of the most visionary American directors of the past 40 years.

That's basically because most of us (just me?) didn't readily know what "the Governors Awards" were out of context--"Honorary awards", OTOH, ohh, okay.

Still, it's nice to see Wes Studi honored for his work in Street Fighter (1994) and Mystery Men (1999):

And then he basically crawled into a bottle of Pabst Blue Ribbon halfway through "Blue Velvet", and set all of his films in roadhouse bars after that, like the end-credits to every episode of the Twin Peaks reboot...Y'know, I could actually SEE Lynch doing a remake of the Patrick Swayze movie, it might work.

(CaveGirl is gone, right, I can say that without her throwing another bunny-boiling fit?  😆 )

He deserves it. One of the few really innovative directors in recent years. Of course it won't be televised however, but those boring short subject awards will still be shown.

I'd rather watch a Lynch film/Mini Series than any superhero crapola. I'd rather go to a roadhouse dive bar than watch any superhero crapola

I'm assuming GEENA DAVIS is getting it for her extracurriculars....some charity or preservation work she does on the side?

i mean, bless her heart, I adore and miss her and she was a TOTAL MOVIE STAR, but lord, I thought she and Kim Basinger were ruling despotically over the other girls on THE ISLAND OF THE LOST SUPPORTING ACTRESS WINNERS somewhere in the South Pacific.

Geena Davis has established the "Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media", which works to eliminate gender bias and stereotypes in television and film.  She was also appointed a special envoy for women and girls in information and communication technologies by the United Nations".

OK.  United Nations work.  That's good stuff.

Possibly apocryphal, but back in the 90's, she reportedly tried to get the American rights to "Sailor Moon", as a "role-model empowerment" vehicle for her daughter, with Davis herself playing demonic villainess Queen Beryl:

hqdefault.jpg

Of course, that was back when few people knew that the show was Japanese, and rights may have tripped up the project, but ah, Geena as Beryl...The roads not taken.  😪

Davis is this year's Hersholt honoree, which is strictly for one's charitable endeavors and not for their body of work.

Well, if she's an almost Olympic-level archer that will serve her well in the movie you just suggested. She might win the whole thing!

Alert-Unpopular Opinion: ...while I sometimes like Lynch's work, it often spirals into self indulgence, leaving the viewer out of it.

While I don't like the alternative (pandering to the audience) often Lynch's work is just hard to take. Sorry, I don't find "panties in my mouth" creative or funny, just juvenile.

"Brilliance" is that fine line of creativity where you can say whatever you want in your art and delight the viewer without offense. That's why so many of us enjoy the broad appeal of pre-codes & WB cartoons.

I agree. I've loved some of his movies and hated others (one who's title escapes me with Laura Dern was the worst movie I've ever seen!) But I feel he deserves the award for his creativity at least. I just rewatched Twin Peaks on Decades the last 2 months. (The original, not the sequel which I've never seen). It still holds up pretty well.

He could also direct mainstream movies quite well (The Straight Story) when he felt like it.
