sewhite2000
Were these guys buddies in real life or what? They appeared in an unusual number of films together. One would assume Newman had the star power to dictate his supporting cast to some degree. Harper, Cool Hand Luke, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Slap Shot. Dargo
Yes sewhite. Paul and Strother were very close buddies. In fact, every Thursday night at the Lucky Strike Lanes along Melrose Ave from around 1966 through about 1975, they were on the same bowling team together. Paul held a 187 scratch average, and Stroth, as everybody called him, including Paul, held a 157 scratch average. (...naaaah, just kiddin' of course...yeah, I suppose they might have been friends, but IF as you supposed, Newman DID have any say at all in who his supporting cast were going to be, perhaps the reason they worked so many times together is because Paul recognized a great character actor when he saw one) 2

Sepiatone
They could have been on friendly terms off the set, and even friends of some fashion. Or too, maybe just liked working together for whatever reason. Casting directors might have noticed some kind of screen chemistry between the two and managed to get them in films together. Was a time I thought there might have been some kind of "thing" going on between VIRGINIA MAYO and STEVE COCHRAN due to the two of them working together frequently. But eventually decided it was just mutual and professional admiration(although who WOULDN'T have minded having a "thing" with Virginia back then? ). ElCid
I think Strother Martin just fit a type that fell in line with the scripts.

Sepiatone It was just the way you stated it; the major reason actors worked together under the studio-system was because they were under contract for the same studio. Actors had few choices, even major stars, as it relates to what films they were in and who else were in those films. This is much different than when Newman made those films with Strother (since they were made after the 'end' of the studio-system era). So why they were in so many films together is interesting. LAHomedog
It is a well established fact in Hollywood that Newman liked to work with Strother Martin, and that is why they were in so many movies together. The directors and the casting directors want to keep Paul happy. The same is true about John Wayne. Both worked with Martin 6 times. 1

COOL HAND LUKE is my favorite of their onscreen collaborations, though HARPER and BUTCH CASSIDAY AND THE SUNDANCE KID were just as good too. Martin made a great squawny little weasel of a sidekick to Lee Marvin's nasty Liberty Valance in THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE. He was another character actor who seemed to pop up in a lot of movies and TV shows in the 50's and 60's (particularly westerns).

Bogie56
I attended a talk with Richard Attenborough and he chuckled at being cast as "Frenchie" in The Sand Pebbles. He got the part because McQueen wanted him in the film. And of course, Frank Sinatra had Brad Dexter in a lot of his films.

Sepiatone
Could have been a "buddy" type thing with Newman and Strother, but too, maybe just Newman suggesting Martin for certain roles due to liking to work with him. Just like you'll notice frequent appearances of certain actors in several CLINT EASTWOOD movies. Like GEOFFREY LEWIS, MATT CLARK, JOHN QUADE, BILL McKINNEY and so on...... But Clint often being both producer AND director in many of those movies probably made it easier for him to work with actors he liked. sewhite2000
I noticed the Eastwood-Geoffrey Lewis connection in my childhood, ,mabe the first instance of me thinking "behind the camera" in my entire life. I was like, woah, these guys must be buds in real life. Later, Geoffrey's daughter Juliette was briefly a big deal in movies.

An odd "beauty", if one can think of her that way.
