C.Bogle
Van Morrison with Tupelo Honey. There seems to be more Van Morrison on YT, but better get this in before Van the Man alerts his mystic, soulful, Caledonian law firm to do their big foot thing. misswonderly3
This is a huge coincidence. I'd already "copied" the song I wanted to post today, and it too is a Van Morrison number. The logical follow-up to a Jackie Wilson song: Jackie Wilson Says , by the one and only Van the Man Morrison. I think either Van or one of the business guys associated with his label have a thing against having his songs available on youtube, because not many of them are. At least, a lot of his original recordings are not available, and that's a shame, because I often feel there's nothing like the original version of his songs. Although he can be an absolute dynamo live, I'm not sure that always translates on these youtube videos. Anyway, this was the only version of this song by Van himself I could find. It's pretty good, but people, if you ever get the chance to hear the original studio take of the song (from the album Saint Dominic's Preview ), give it a listen, it's bursting with life and joy. Van says that Jackie Wilson Says ( I'm in Heaven When You Smile ) : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X86C6kFEA6Y ps- iFolks, if you haven't checked out the Jackie Wilson "Reet Petite" video I posted yesterday, I recommend that you check it out. It's not only a good song, the video is very funny.
C.Bogle
I got so busy yesterday, I forgot to play the Jackie Wilson video, but.... today I got one of those this is copyrighted material and not available in your country messages. Oops. Apparently it's all right in Canada, but not in the lower 48 (and the other 2). There is a lot more Van than there was a few years ago, and there is the occasional album cut with album cover graphic, but it's hit and miss. I remember maybe about a year or so ago just about every video had big V M lettering superimposed on it. Talk about annoying. So things are looking up. Jackie Wilson Says is a wonderful song that you can't help moving along to.
DownGoesFrazier
Jackie Wilson was known as "Mr. Excitement" because of his dancing and moving around on stage, which could put James Brown to shame. Tragically, during one such performance at the Latin Casino outside Philly in the early '70s, he had a massive heart attack from which he never recovered. He had begun his career as the lead singer of the doo-**** group Billy Ward and the Dominoes.
misswonderly3
Thanks for that, finance, I love Jackie Wilson and have been known to dance to his music.
misswonderly3
The topic of squabbling brothers in a music combo has come up this week (Everlys). At least two more that come to mind are the Kinks and Oasis. Leaving my beloved Kinks out of it for today, I thought I'd post the Oasis song that for me was the turning point in terms of how I felt about this band. I used to dislike Oasis, mainly because everybody else liked them so much, and I couldn't figure out why. For some reason I missed hearing what I thought was called "Sally Can Wait" until years after its release. Great song, anthemic chorus, cryptic lyrics - I loved it ! Hallelujah ! I'd seen the light ! Blah blah blah...Here's the original Oasis video of Don't Look Back in Anger : now take that look from off your face. C.Bogle
At least not today. I've always liked Oasis, lots of good songs going for them, though I haven't kept up with them too much after their time in the spotlight. You only get so many years, and then it's out to (a still profitable) pasture.
C.Bogle
Some old-fashioned down home blues. The Allman Brothers doing Soulshine. (I think the Allmans got along pretty well. Of course if Duane hadn't died so young, maybe they would have got to arguing eventually).

misswonderly3
Shakin' All Over was originally written and performed by Johnny Kidd and the Pirates, a Brit band, who released their recording of it in 1960.It's not bad, but for me the definitive version is the cover by the famous (at least in Canada) Canadian band, The Guess Who. This'll leave you Shakin' All Over: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=koArHqulo3A
C.Bogle
Good song. I'm not familiar with them except for If You Don't Know Me By Now.
C.Bogle
I remember hearing the name Johnny Kidd and the Pirates and knew they were British, but not much beyond that. Didn't the regular Who do this one live at one time?
C.Bogle
Cowboy Copas is homesick for sweet home Alabam. He died in the plane crash that also killed Patsy Cline. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Rku2HjUFqU
misswonderly3
Yes, the Who did do their own rendition of Shakin' All Over, and all things considered, I much prefer the Who to the Guess Who. However, it's the Guess Who's version of this song that takes the cake for me. One thing I forget about when I think of old time country music is how skilled a lot of those guys were as musicians. I think of the culture, the charmingly flashy clothes, the lyrics (often a lot of word-play), but I don't give a thought to the talent that goes into how they play those gee-tars. That video helped to illuminate that aspect of old c &w music.
DownGoesFrazier
I assume that you prefer both the Who and the Guess Who over the Wonder Who....... Gotcha?
DownGoesFrazier
The "Wonder Who" was an alternate name used for certain releases by Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. Recordings under that name featured Valli singing in a somewhat different sounding falsetto.
misswonderly3
I am nothing if not amenable to suggestion. Here, forthwith, be Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. C.Bogle
Well pilgrim, I guess that won't be used as John Wayne's theme song. Yeah, old Cowboy is doing some fine pickin'. And the boys in the background had to be talented musicians. But when you think of the big country stars like Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, George Jones, etc. they're not really famous due to their virtuoso musicianship

DownGoesFrazier
Good latter-day Everlys was "Crying in the Rain", which I believe was written by Carole King (and her husband and co-writer at the time, Gerry Goffin).
C.Bogle
R.E.M. playing It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine). Michael Stipe was on Nightline last Friday doing the Playlist segment. R.E.M.'s new album will be out this week I believe. Holy coincidence, Flackman! misswonderly3
Hey, that's my home town they're playing in ! (Toronto) Come to think of it, I remember hearing about that REM show, I'm pretty sure it was free. Couldn't make it though. MacDonald and Giles were two musicians who emerged from the King Crimson "project" (for lack of a better word). They were both very good at what they did, and they released one album, in 1971 I think. Every track on this album is good, but you have to be in the mood for prog rock when you listen to it. Here is a relatively short piece from the "MacDonald and Giles" recording, Flight of the Ibis. It's very pretty, actually: Edited by: misswonderly on Mar 7, 2011 2:02 PM
DownGoesFrazier
Why was it a "project"? Wasn't King Crimson a band like other bands?
