"Yes we can can!" said Little Nicola.

So I was at the dentist's the other day, getting my teeth cleaned (don't you love it when we "share" ? )

The radio was on, and while I was cringing under the merciless hygienist's sonic zapper device, I heard a familiar tune...it was Hank Williams' I'm so Lonesome I Could Cry . But someone else was singing it, not Hank. Don't know who the cover artist was (and I'm sure it's been covered many times) but it just wasn't the same. I wanted to communicate this to the dental hygienist, try to get a Hank Williams discussion going, maybe while she was getting out the polisher thing they all use. But it didn't seem like the best time to talk.

Anyway, it made me want to hear the original, one of his best. So here's sad old Hank with his beautiful plangent song, I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry :

Uh-oh. I'm scheduled for a cleaning next week. I try to get the conversation

in before the actual process starts, because with all that water surging around

in one's mouth, it's hard to go beyond head nods. Yeah, when they start with

the flavored polish at least you know it's almost over. I think my dentist's radio

is tuned to some harmless contemporary soft rock station. TMI for today.

No doubt Hank is the King of Country. You can't miss with old Hank. If he went

to the dentist, he was probably already self-anesthetized.

Better Harry Morgan than Henry Morgan.

Well, at the risk of some obvious punning, I did have my tongue in my cheek when I spoke of my suppressed desire to converse with the dental hygienist while they were in the middle of hygienating.

George Thoroughly Good, I always want to call him. He looks like Mick Jagger to me. Although I don't have any of his albums, I always enjoy hearing his music. Nothing like some crunching guitar riffs and snakey sax playing for your basic rockin' it out good time.

I did not do my research properly...Deborah Harry is neither Henry Morgan the actor nor Harry Morgan the liquor product. Turns out she's really Harry Belafonte incognito.

Misswonderly, looks like I'll be heading north of the border (up your way) sometime in May. First time I'll be using my passport (never needed it before for my many trips to Canada). Burton Cummings has a number of shows in Ontario, not sure which one I'll get to, not so much the location but the date is the issue for me. He may tour in the states later this year, but I can't take the chance, for years he's been saying he wants to do a U.S. tour but it never happens.

George is an Original American Musical Genius--He has successfully fused:

Blues--John Lee Hooker

RnR--Chuck Beery

C&W--Hank Williams

Into an American genre of Funky Blues, Country Rock.

If you ever get to hear his "Willie & the Hand Jive", you'll hear the history of American Rock.

mrroberts, how nice that you'll be travelling soon to this fair country. You probably know this, but anyway - you don't so much need a passport to get into Canada, as you need one to get back into the United States. It wasn't so long ago that no passport was required either way. Dommage.

If you go in May, I hope it will be after May 2nd. There is a federal election in full swing right now, and I wouldn't want you to see and hear all the silliness that goes on. Election Day is May 2nd, so you'll be all right after that.

Glad you know about Burton Cummings and the Guess Who. He had quite a voice, one of those manly, meaty, kind of voices. Here is a hit of theirs' from 1968, from the album "Wheatfield Soul".

And this song does have a soul vibe to it: These Eyes . I selected the one with Spanish subtitles so we can multi-task and learn another language while watching the Guess Who.

My dentist is nearing retirement age, so I don't want any heavy metal playing while

he's anywhere near my mouth. The soothing sounds of bland rock are perfect in this

case.

The Guess Who were pretty good, though they did bump up against the borders of wimp

rock every once in a while.

Burton Cummings will be performing songs from his recent album, "Above The Ground" (which by the way is excellent), as well as some of the old hits from his solo career and his days in The Guess Who. Unfortunately as with so many old rock bands, there is a split with the former members; one guy has the rights to the band name and can perform with any hired help he chooses and advertise as the "legitimate" band. So currently there is a "Guess Who" band touring the states while many of the key members are out doing their own thing. There was a real Guess Who band reunion about 10 years ago now , all players were former members of when the band was a top hit rock band. But sadly, that only lasted about 3 years. If you want to see/hear the music by the guy who sang and wrote/co-wrote the songs, Burton Cummings is the guy to go watch.
