misswonderly3
That Mazzy Star song posted on Monday reminded me of Nico singing with the Velvets- I'll Be Your Mirror:
C.Bogle
When you see Brian, Carl, and Dennis together, it's like one of those who does not belong quizzes. Maybe they should have done a DNA test just to make sure. I think I've read Dennis was the only one who actually surfed, and if he picked up girls, he didn't have to work very hard at it. Score one for the drummers. I don't know how accurate it is, but Love always seemed to be kind of a pain and a bs artist. That probably came in handy picking up girls. Being in a popular band couldn't have hurt either.
C.Bogle
They do have a similar dreamy vocal delivery, though Nico is a tad harder edged than Hope, plus she has the accent going too. Too bad she had a rather tragic life.
C.Bogle
Last, but not least, Ringo Starr with It Don't Come Easy, his first hit single. Have to admit, Ringo got one of the luckiest breaks of all time.
misswonderly3
Yes, the dreamy quality is present in both songs, but what I meant was the actual musical arrangements and chord progressions of Blue Flower are reminiscent of the Velvet Underground sound in general, and I'll Be Your Mirror in particular. Of course, the Mazzy Star tune rocks harder than the Nico/Lou Reed song. Both are good.
DownGoesFrazier
If you were a member of the Beach Boys and also surfed, you wouldn't have to work very hard at it either.
DownGoesFrazier
Dion's "Little Diane"-------Can you think of any other rock song that features the kazoo? Edited by: finance on Apr 21, 2011 5:28 PM
mrroberts
"It Don't Come Easy" is a big favorite of mine, I played that 45 to death when the song came out. Have you ever heard "It Don't Come Easy" with George Harrison singing over the same music? Its also on youtube.
C.Bogle
When you play them back to back, the resemblance is a little more obvious. Mazzy Star might have been influenced by the Velvets a bit, but their sound is still their own, and they're both good bands.
C.Bogle
I had that 45 too. A catchy rock song. I saw a bit of the George Harrison version. On the original single Ringo has sole credit as the songwriter, but he later admitted George co-wrote it. All's well that ends well.
C.Bogle
Rex Allen singing Son, Don't Go Near the Indians. At first glance, this seems pretty non PC, but as things turn out, it's a good piece of advice, at least when it refers to one particular Indian. That's because things take a very weird turn near the end. Yep, they really don't write too many like this anymore. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTZYAOlk1WI
cujas
I had the 45 of Dion's "Little Diane"--I wore that out.
DownGoesFrazier
I had forgotten about Dion for a while. His work with the Belmonts and solo (backed by the Del-Satins) was absolutely outstanding. Much better than the other teen idols.
misswonderly3
Here is the best Dion hit, The Wanderer. Man, he just belts this tune out like he means it. Obviously the video shows the performance is dubbed, or synched, or whatever, and it's just using the recording. What's funny about this show is the audience, not exactly the rock n roll youth demographic; still, they don't look middle-aged either. They look like they're in their early 30s, still young enough to dig Dion, I guess. But they're all so sedate, and so is Dion himself. Come on, Dion, get down and dirty ! And because that video cuts off the last few seconds of the song, and because sometimes you just can't get enough Dion, here's another vid of the same tune, complete this time, with pretty funny images to go with it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FBtmaq0J2kU Edited by: misswonderly on Apr 25, 2011 10:23 AM

DownGoesFrazier
I'll have to go with "Runaround Sue"--------"Here's my story, it's sad but true, it's about a girl that I once knew"---classic. Actually his best of all was "A Teenager in Love" with the Belmonts.
misswonderly3
Oh, come on, he sounds like a complete wuss singing Teenager in Love. With The Wanderer , he's found his b*lls.
cujas
The biggest number in The Beach Boys Live Concert album in '64 was Denny singing "The Wanderer". Do you remember this record?

DownGoesFrazier
He was playing the role of a wuss in that song. He doesn't sound at all like a wuss in "I Wonder Why", which was even earlier.
misswonderly3
But why are Pink Floyd collectively so poe-faced? Bob Dylan time. I don't know why original Dylan recordings are so hard to find on youtube. There are many covers, most of them wretched, but the real McCoy Dylan tunes are rare. Maybe it's a "rights" issue yet again? Please let me know, folks, if you can pick up this Dylan song from my link, or if it tells you it's "not available in your country." I don't get how it works. From his great Blonde on Blonde album, here's Absolutely Sweet Marie. No chocolate bars involved. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ffSLrB-4Rus
C.Bogle
Space rock is a serious business, dealing with issues of cosmic importance. I think it had mostly to do with Roger Waters. He seemed to have a rather dour view of life. They also were fairly reclusive as far as press and publicity went. Syd Barrett had a much sunnier and lighter take on things, but after he left and Waters took over, a lot of that left with him. Didn't seem to hurt their popularity though. I haven't looked for Dylan on YT recently, but the last time I did I also didn't notice a lot of good live videos or even album cuts. As for the reason, time to put on your leopard skin pill-box hat and think it through.

DownGoesFrazier
You introduced me to the term, so I'm certainly no expert on spelling it. Having said that, does poe-faced, rather than po-faced, mean that you have a face that resembles Edgar Allen Poe?
DownGoesFrazier
I mentioned it, so here it is-----"I Wonder Why", Dion & the Belmonts' first hit. Edited by: finance on Apr 26, 2011 5:55 PM
