C.Bogle
Some books have lists of one hit wonders. Some are memorable, some not. I think of Iron Butterfly more as an album one hit wonder, because the single didn't go all that far. I've heard of Robert Gordon, but never got into his music. misswonderly3
Indirectly, I believe...she had "addiction issues" and also developed complications from a fall down the stairs, most likely caused by being out-of-it from drugs and / or alcohol. Combined - the drugs, the alcohol, and the fall - these elements caused her death.
misswonderly3
I looked for a video of this that featured the original recording, but could only find one with the album cover from Loaded for seven or so minutes. Oh, well. It's the music that counts. C.Bogle
Miss W has it right. She was at her parents' house and fell down the stairs and hit her head on the concrete or stone floor. I don't know how much medical care she had, but she died a few weeks later of a cerebral hemorrhage. She did have alcohol and drug problems, but whether she was indulging on that particular day I don't know. Whatever the circumstances, it's a very sad story. C.Bogle
Always liked that song. Kind of a laid-back, lazy, let's meander tune.
C.Bogle
Brian Eno with Back in Judy's Jungle. Ain't going to touch that one. He's not only a member of the Hair Club for Men, but he's the musical director too.
misswonderly3
Today is CANADA DAY ! In honour of this, I'm posting a song by native-born Canadian Neil Young .It's one of the first songs I ever heard by him, and I've never stopped being impressed. This is just a great little rocker, pure and simple. Evidently others such as The Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead, and John Entwistle of the Who, think so too, as they have all covered Cinnamon Girl : Edited by: misswonderly on Jul 1, 2011 11:24 AM
C.Bogle
Happy Canada Day, Miss W. The Canadians have always had a knack for clever holiday names. Not to overlook our friends in Quebec, but June 24 was St Jean- Baptiste Day, at least according to my cutesy animal calendar. That is a classic Neil track. I can see the Pumpkins or Radiohead covering it, but I'd love to hear John Entwistle's version.
C.Bogle
Hard to beat these two when it comes to country music duets. Loretta and Conway singing After the Fire is Gone. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4kznF_iwoI&feature=related
misswonderly3
Well, I've never heard such a poetic justification for adultery. Pretty convincing when that sweet slide guitar joins in. "Canada Day" replaced the earlier name for our July 1st holiday, which believe it or not was the equally unimaginative "Dominion Day". But nobody's called it that for decades. We're trying to shed all references to our former ties to British Imperialism and the Queen (maysheliveforever.)
DownGoesFrazier
Yet the new royal couple are apparently currently making an extended visit to Canada, to excited throngs. Anything to do with formwer dominion status?
misswonderly3
finance, at first I misread your post and thought you said "to excited thongs." I wish you had, I can just imagine the young royal couple waving and smiling to a horde of Canadians clad in nothing but thongs ( and I don't mean the summer foot wear.) Hopefully they'd be wearing lots of sunscreen. I suppose there's some sort of Canada/British connection, but Canadian Royalists are outnumbered by Canadians who have no use for the Royal Family (maytheyliveforever) and would like to cut all ties to Britian, possibly transform our system of government from a Constitutional Parliament to - Oh, I don't know, perhaps a republic. Heavens above ! ( quote from the Queen herself, MSLF. ) C.B., I'm impressed that you've heard of St. Jean Baptiste day. Yes, a very big day in Quebec, June 24, bigger for the Quebecois than Canada Day. Only a few days apart, though, for what that's worth. Thong -wearing on both occasions is optional. cujas
i must have been 20 before i understood why the English were singing "America, My Country 'Tis of thee" all the time. I thought it was rather odd. I found out in a London movie theatre--what I also found out is that they play "God Save The Queen" after the last movie and you've got to stand up and be quiet--not start walking out and talking loud like we do. So much for cultural differences.
misswonderly3
cujas, baby, it was the other way around with me...I couldn't understand why Americans were singing "God Save the Queen". Guess I wasn't paying too much attention to the lyrics. I'd be surprised if the custom you mentioned of standing up at the end of a movie while they played "GStQ" is still practiced. Hey, here's the Sex Pistols with their take on the whole thing:

C.Bogle
What would country music be without cheatin' songs? And this one is a drinkin' song too, "The bottle's almost empty." Not only were Conway and Loretta a great musical duo, but they saved money by using one can of super hold hair spray between them. I can't take much credit for mentioning St. Jean-Baptiste Day. It just happened to be on my cutesy animal calendar. Speaking of which, I noticed that August 1st will be Civic Holiday in Canada. Sounds like a another thriller. Of course the Fourth of July doesn't exactly show a over- abundance of imagination. God Bless the Sex Pistols. They hit the nail right on the head. After their sojourn in Canada, the royal parasites are heading our way. Damn, we've got to tighten our immigration laws to keep undesirables out. I remember as a kid we sang a variation of GSTQ/MC,TOT with lyrics about somebody driving a garbage truck. The rest is lost to memory. I'm starting to get into that new Canadian doo-**** group, The Tar Sands. Retro chic baby.
